Karoma is one of two new Spirit Beasts introduced in Cataclysm — the other being Ghostcrawler. His model is that of a spectral wolf — exactly the same as the legendary, and no longer tamable, Grimtotem Spirit Guide.

Since the ghost wolf was perhaps one of the rarest and most treasured hunter pets… ever… I think Blizzard added Karoma to appease the masses. Rather than limit proud ghost wolf owners to the select few who managed the difficult tame before the hotifx, Blizzard thought it would be neat if every hunter could have one.

Keep ’em on a short leash

All three specs, not just Beast Masters, should exercise very careful control over their pets in PvP. If you’re serious about PvP, then you’re no doubt bringing a pet with you into battle that provides some sort of PvP utility. Obviously, should your pet die, you’d lose this ability, its talented pet family abilities, along with some added DPS. That’s no good.

In addition to the fundamental practice of keeping your pet alive, you also want to keep them relatively close. Don’t send your pet off willy nilly, chasing after some fleeing player, while you sit there blasting away at attackers, oblivious to where Fido’s headed. You absolutely need to have your pet nearby in the event you need Master’s Call. This is one of our greatest escape buttons, so be sure to keep your pet within a reasonable distance so that you can access it quickly when needed.

Ghostcrawler

While queueing for some BGs last week, I decided to head over to Vash’jir to see if I could spot the new crustaceanal apparition variety Spirit Beast, ie: Ghostcrawler.

Now being level 85, I was kind of excited over the prospect of adding this new beastie to my stable. Oddly enough, I’ve seen very few hunters running around with Ghostcrawler since I’ve been active in Cataclysm. maybe they’re out murdering him, I dunno… 😉

At any rate, I figured that searching for him in between BGs while waiting for queues to pop was a good strategy. My days of marathon camps are very far behind me. Nowadays, if they happen to be around great… if not, well I can just come back another time.

Alright, so I portal into Vashj’ir, then hop my sea-horsey and head to the Abyssal Depths. As soon as I entered the Abandoned Reef I began tapping my rare pet target macro. Must’ve been my lucky day because lo and behold, his portrait popped up — he was there waiting for me!

There’s nothing like a good Spirit Beast camping, so pull out your tent, grab some marshmallows for roasting, and don’t forget to bring Grandpa to tell his beloved campfire tales, ‘cause it’s time to go camping!

Before setting off you should know both of the new SB’s are level 85, so don’t be getting all excited unless you’re 85. If you are 85, then by all means let your excitement run wild! I myself happened to hit 85 mining… that’s right, not killing some epic beast, or toiling over some arduous quest, nope… mining. I about cracked up that what put me over the edge was one little Elementium node… Go mining!!!
