Legion-era hunters who want to tame Ban’thalos, see this post instead.
The rare pet hunting has continued to be successful for me since I landed Skarr the other night — the first of the rares I’d tamed since entering the Molten Front earlier this week.
Yesterday I nabbed Ban’thalos, making him the fifth Patch 4.2 rare pet I’ve acquired since Tuesday. The procedure I used for taming this new Spirit Beast was as follows…
As many of you know… Patch 4.2 hits live servers today (06/28/11). The following guide serves as a rundown of the new beasties — where to find them and how to successfully tame them.
There are 10 new taming challenge pets in all. 3 new Spirit Beasts, 5 rare Lava Spiders, and 2 extremely badass looking metallic type pets — Karkin, a liquid metal crab, and Skarr, an obsidian cat. This is sure to keep pet happy hunters busy for some time… I know I’ll be on the hunt for a few of these myself. 🙂
Another new Spirit Beast has been discovered on the Patch 4.2 PTR. This latest spectral kitty is known as Magria.
Magria not only looks nearly identical to Ankha, but also poses the same taming challenge. According to this post in the Petopia forums, you must remove your armor before attempting the tame, as Magria’s damage scales with armor rating just as Ankha’s does.

Finally… a flappy variety Spirit Beast. I knew they’d add one sooner or later.
Ban’thalos is one of the 8 new rare-spawn-hunter-pet-taming-challenges in the Firelands arriving in Patch 4.2. Like Ankha, Ban’thalos is a Spirit Beast, tamable only by Beast Mastery hunters.
I just caught this video by WoWInsider which features one of the 8 new rare pets coming in Patch 4.2. I figured I’d share it. 🙂
Ankha is a Spirit Beast, so this pet will only be tamable by Beast Masters.
Based on what Mathew said (at 0:18), it sounds like the 8 new pets will all be exotic..?! I’d take that comment with a grain of salt at this point, because I can’t imagine Blizz would force hunters into one spec in order to participate in these taming challenges. Then again… who knows… it is a Beast Mastery sort of undertaking.
