Skitterflame

Skitterflame - Rare Lava Spider in Patch 4.2

See my Patch 4.2 Rare Pet Briefing Post for an updated guide on how to tame Skitterflame, as well as the other 9 Patch 4.2 Taming Challenge pets.

Skitterflame is another of the rare beast taming challenges being added in Patch 4.2. He’s a red lava spider found on Fireplume Peak in the Molten Front.

The trick to taming Skitterflame is you must cool him down enough so that you can tame him. Also, his damage scales based on his current energy level. As you’ll see in the video, he hits pretty hard when at full energy. 😉

So… you need to use ice traps to not only snare him to protect yourself from his blows, but also to get him cooled down enough for taming. The video states that he becomes tamable at around 20% energy.

Solix - Rare Lava Spider

Solix is among the eight new Taming Challenge pets, so he requires a little more planning and effort than the drop a Freezing Trap and tame types of pets.

Keep ’em on a short leash

All three specs, not just Beast Masters, should exercise very careful control over their pets in PvP. If you’re serious about PvP, then you’re no doubt bringing a pet with you into battle that provides some sort of PvP utility. Obviously, should your pet die, you’d lose this ability, its talented pet family abilities, along with some added DPS. That’s no good.

In addition to the fundamental practice of keeping your pet alive, you also want to keep them relatively close. Don’t send your pet off willy nilly, chasing after some fleeing player, while you sit there blasting away at attackers, oblivious to where Fido’s headed. You absolutely need to have your pet nearby in the event you need Master’s Call. This is one of our greatest escape buttons, so be sure to keep your pet within a reasonable distance so that you can access it quickly when needed.

Another Reason I Went Back to Beast Mastery for PvP

Bone Spider

Bleh… no way am I going to roll with that as a pet.

Spider is one of the few pet types I’ve never used. For one, they used to suck up until Blizzard gave them their Web ability. Second, they just never remotely appealed to me as far as looks are concerned. Also, my wife’s not afraid of too much, but one thing that freaks her out more than almost anything are Black Widows. I’m sure she’d just love having me show up with my new creepy companion when helping her out with a group quest in Icecrown. 😈

Anyway, when I was playing around with MM for a bit in arena, I decided to say screw it… I’m gonna get me a spider. So what if I don’t like how they look, and too bad if my wife gets grossed out as she peers over my shoulder and sees me running round with this horrific thing in arena. After all, it’s just a bunch of pixels… it’s not real.

So, I moseyed over to Icecrown to locate me a level 80 Necrotic Webspinner. Alas, I found one, landed, then sat there… A few moments later I came to this conclusion…
