The relentless pursuit of perfection

Apart from my daily crack at obtaining the Horseman’s Mount, along with the occasional BG & heroic, most of my game time has been spent working tirelessly on my UI. My goal has mainly been to make it more focus-friendly, but I’ve also added a few new bells and whistles, as well as tightened up a few loose ends.

So far I’m really pleased with how it’s shaping up, and I’ve yet to notice any major issues or bugs.

Skoll

One thing you may find surprising is that I’ve disabled Power Auras for the time being. I won’t be abandoning the addon, but I am thinking of going with a more minimalist approach to using it this time. Now that I’ve kicked off the training wheels, I’m not finding as many reasons to utilize it as a 4.0.1 Beast Master. Regardless, I’ll still be updating my Power Auras strings as I explore the the other specs.

I must admit though… I’m having a lot of fun with BM right now – it may be tough to get me to try MM or SV. 😉

Anyway… for those of you interested in playing with an updated version of my UI compilation… I’ve just got a few things left to mess with, which means I hope to have an updated version of it available for download sometime next week.

Skoll

Most of the addons I’ve been using are still present, but I’ve reconfigured things a bit; allowing for more on-screen info, while still maintaining a small footprint.

One thing I haven’t figured out how to do is get my chat panel to fade-out when chat is idle. I used to be able to do this by just parenting the KGPanel, but it’s not cooperating this time. If anyone knows how to achieve this effect using Chatter + KGPanels, please let me know.

Alrighty… well I just wanted to drop in a quick update, but now it’s back to work.

Skoll while prowling with Spirit Walk

Oh yea… almost forgot to mention it… I tamed Skoll last night..!

  1. Did you ever find a solution to this issue? I’m trying to figure out the exact same thing.

  2. you look so triumphant in your pic with Skoll. I’m ecstatic that I finally got him tonight. I got him in the same spot you did, too! 😀 Approx 3:38am server time for all the Greymane folk out there!

  3. You can’t move/replace their onscreen graphic for that skill either, it’s been attempted.

I think you can by disabling the spell affects in the default interface. The combat tab,and it’s called spell alerts.Uncheck this if it’s checked. But then again I could be wrong. It’s like a built in Power Aura’s and it’s just nasty how they made theirs.
    Just my 2 cents.

  4. Hi there, just looking to get a UI for my hunter, and must say that yours is looking very nice. my screen resolution is down at 1440×900 but as soon as you get that download up and running i would love to give it a go.

  5. I’m sure you are hard at work with your UI but i’m puzzled somewhat as I how it seems from your screenshots everything is working well. I’ve updated all the addons from what i could find and currently running the default UI. By chance you using other addons or yours with minor tweaks? I’m getting all kinds of errors or addons not functioning correctly.

  6. Power Auras:

Another reason I believe your old setup with the curved aura bars won’t work so well – Blizz decided to make one of the BM skills have it’s onscreen graphic show up in the exact same place, with the exact same shape that you had for your curved Power Aura bars. When I first noticed this, I was rather upset and thought one of their designers was a douche and did it on purpose. You can’t move/replace their onscreen graphic for that skill either, it’s been attempted.

However, since I game on a widescreen LCD, I am now seriously looking into what I can do to shrink and shove as many UI elements as I can onto the sides of my screens instead of the top and bottom.

Congrats on Skoll, I went for all 3 Un’Goro Devilsaur spawns myself, since old world spawns like that are apparently going poof on Dec 7th.

    • He seems to be usually out late. I got him at 11:35pm (and Gar at 2:09am). I have never seen Skoll in the morning/afternoon. Good luck!

  8. Well done on the tame!

Already had Skoll, but just this second solotamed King Krush! he feared me once, stomped me once, and the third time he was mine. Although I didn’t use any potions or haste food, I did have about 420 haste just from gear, so it was just over 8 seconds for the tame.

  9. I LOVE your UI Gar, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how you have so few buttons at the bottom-center. Do you keybind most of your stuff? I have tried to set mine up in a similar fashion (not using yours specifically, YET) but I have a hard time telling myself I can do without 3-4 bars full of buttons 🙁

I’ve never really (in 5 years) done a lot with anything but the default keybinds. Do I Lose?

    • Yea keybinds are where it’s at, once you get used to them. I have Gar’s UI and love it, will love it more once the updates are done I’m sure. I suggest keybinds for you, really once you get used to them it makes things much easier for you.

  10. Gratz on getting Skoll again!

I like the look of your UI, and I think I’ll give it a try when you say it’s ready for a test-drive…

PVP question for you… I see that Mark of the Wild now gives a larger bonus to resistances than it used to… so, what would our new spell pen cap be? I didn’t bother with spell pen in BM PVP before because we did almost all physical damage, but now we’re heavily reliant on Arcane damage. Do you know where to find or how to calculate the new spell pen cap?

  11. New to website, I love it. I have some sad news though. All the Spirit Beasts lost there Moonfire type spell. All gone after patch 4.0.1 came out. I was sad. Loque is starting to become a normal cat, besides his model look.

  12. Gratz on Skoll! I *JUST* got him (like 10 mins ago) on US – Korgath (Bor’s Breath spawn) and I have to give a big “thanks!” to everyone who suggested NPCScan – would never have found him without it.

The new UI is shaping up well… I had a variant of Caith going before patch but it’s kinda feeling clunky now. With all the time cleared from lack of raiding (and now lack of Skoll-hunting) I may try working with what you have…

  13. First of all, big grats on Skoll. It took me almost a week to get him!

Now for the UI… I tend to move the action bar up near the center just to make sure I see what’s happening. How do you manage looking up and down to keep track of cooldowns?

  14. lol what a great blog to introduce your new spirit beast.

I am loving your new UI. I might even be tempted to toss mine aside and give it a spin. I do so very love a minimalistic approach.

    • Same. I like seeing as much of the game world as possible. When we’re in combat we need a certain amount of info on-screen, but I like to scale that depending upon what I’m doing. When I’m just frolicking around Azeroth, I don’t want to see much UI at all.

  15. Big Props to you, Gar, for taming Electric Blue! Now that I can tame more pets outside of my SB4/Nuramoc collection, I am remebering what a mid-numbing grind it is to fly circles around the Basin looking for Krush and Aotona. >=(

I hope for the Cata equivalent of the “kill the rare spawns” achievement they decide to leave tameable beast OFF the list!
