Garwulf Vs. King Krush

Final Score

King Krush 3

Garwulf 0

While roaming around the basin last night looking for Loque’nahak, I happened upon King Krush. He’s very hard to miss considering he’s ginormous and green. Not to mention he’s the only Devilsaur in Sholazar Basin. When I spotted him he was eating a level 77 Mage.

After the Mage was dead, I quickly abandoned my pet (bad move) and ran over to tame him. Let me tell you…

KING KRUSH HITS VERY HARD.

King Krush
That's a Huge Dino Ass

I originally headed into Sholazar Basin at level 75 to tame him. After spending a day and a half looking for the big green dino, I dinged 76 and decided to go after Loque’nahak instead. It’s laughable now to think I had designs on solo taming him at level 75.

Sporting my high stamina Brutal Gladiator/S4 PvP gear, I ran over and dropped a trap and started the taming process. What I didn’t know was, Krush is immune to any and all types of CC. After getting my HPs chewed down to about 10%, I feigned and bandaged. I was in quite a hurry to tame him, because I knew someone would be along shortly who’d want to kill him for the achievement and his drops.

I chowed down on some 30 stam well fed food and charged after him again. Same result. Once again I bandaged up, ate, and tried taming hoping I’d get lucky and resist a fear. Nope.

After my third failed attempt, I opened up Thottbot since I recalled seeing something about him being a rough solo tame. I dismissed those claims because I knew I was a big bad Hunter who never had any trouble taming elites or rares before. Ha! This guy put me in my place real quick.

After reading about successful solo taming on Thottbot I went back into my WoW screen with my new found knowledge hoping the fourth time would be the charm. Unfortunately, the first thing I saw was a level 79 pally doing work on him. He downed Krush pretty easily. I hovered over the Pally’s portrait to check his health and he was still over 90%. Nerf Paladins imo.

What I learned by reading some posts on Thottbot is that you have to plan for this one. He hits like a truck and casts fear every 10 seconds. So, for any aspiring Hunters out there who desire to solo tame the only green Devilsaur in the game, here’ what you should do:

Update 12/02 – Holy Misinformation Batman!

Batman
That's false Robin. Hunters cannot dodge or parry while taming.

If anyone happened to read this post yesterday I apologize for the false information obtained via Thottbot. Someone claimed to have solo tamed Krush using a Frost Trap (which I have yet to test), Improved Aspect of the Monkey, and Deterrence. He claimed that the Frost Trap slowed him enough to shorten the tame to 10 seconds once Krush reached him. That sounds fishy. Then he claimed IAotM and Deterrence allowed him to dodge the attacks, fears, etc. The glaring hole in that logic is how could Deterrence increase dodge during the last 10 seconds of the tame when it only lasts 10 seconds..? If krush was in his trap for 10 seconds, then Deterrence would’ve been up by the time he started hitting him. You can’t activate it during the tame, so…

Yet another example of don’t believe everything you read.

Anyhow, I was in the midst of trying to tame Krush when I was reading his suggestions and didn’t give it too much thought. Only thing I really took from it was that not using TBW was where I failed. I just always immediately abandon my current pet out of habit.

Combat Log
No dodges in there...nope...no siree...

Hunters cannot dodge while channeling Tame Beast. I tried it out and confirmed that you cannot dodge attacks while channeling. The mob may miss you, but dodge bonuses do not apply. With that in mind, here is my updated list of tips for solo taming Krush. Again, these are merely suggestions and ideas. I just wanted to let other Hunters know that he’s not a walk up and start tame beast… and done. Since I haven’t successfully solo tamed him, I’m not an authority, However, you can bet this is what I’m going to do next time:

  • Make sure that you have Aspect of the Dragonhawk on for the damage reduction. This is assuming of course that you have Aspect Mastery.
  • Use Drums of Battle or any other haste granting items you may have in your inventory. This can shave a few nanoseconds off of the tame timer, and possibly save you from a final killing blow.
  • Make sure you’re loaded up with Stamina gear, well fed, and buffed with scrolls and/or pots if possible. This guy hits mail wearers very hard.
  • Keep your existing pet out at the very beginning. This is very important because you’re only chance to resist his fears is to be under The Beast Within spell. No way will you be able to solo tame him without TBW. Cast TBW, abandon your pet, and then start taming Krush. If you’re lucky he’ll cast a fear right away, and then another before the 18 seconds is up. That should give you enough time to finish Tame Beast.

I even went so far as to make a taming macro since every second counts when trying to tame this guy. I’m actually just going to use it from now on for added insurance while taming any new pets. You don’t want to accidentally have Viper on when attempting to tame him.

/cast !Aspect of the Dragonhawk
/cast Tame Beast

This puts me in Dragonhawk if I’m not already, and then starts channeling the tame. It may seem like an unnecessary macro, but as busy as it is in SB right now, every second counts. Not to mention, some of us can tend to get a bit flustered when finally faced with the pet we’ve been stalking for days or weeks.

I feel confident now that if I see Krush again I’ll have a sporting chance of getting him. Edit: Of course I’m going to wait until level 80 most likely before I mess with him next time. He’s somewhat of a trophy for Hunters because solo taming him is quite difficult. However, if he does eat my face off again and I decide I still want to try solo taming, I may go with this spec:

BM Build

This spec sucks for just about everything outside of solo taming King Krush. 😉 What it does is boost health by a respectable amount and also provides the 4% damage reduction. The 3/3 in IAotM and Catlike Reflexes is not necessary, and could go elsewhere. The main thing is to go at least 15 deep into Survival for the Survival Instincts and Survivalist.

I want to tame King Krush almost as bad as Loque’nahak now. 😐 Edit: However, I think I’ll just wait until level 80. 😉
