Taking One for the Team

Nuramoc

Ironic huh… Only a few short weeks have passed since I swore off Beast Mastery, yet here I am returning to my beloved PvP spec.

This time’s it’s business though. A few guildies and I started a 3s team mainly for fun, but after getting our asses handed to us the other night, it wasn’t so much “fun” for me anymore. My healer is new to arena, and is still working on his game and his gear. Meanwhile, he’s been having a terrible time trying to keep me up, as I’m the opposing team’s focus-fire target about 99.9% of the time.

I tried Marksmanship out for about a dozen matches and had similar results to that of Survival. My survivability was about the same, burst and Readiness were awesome, but it didn’t really seem to be the answer for us. If I were an elite Hunter I suppose I would be able to lead us to 2200 and beyond, but “elite” I am not. I’m pretty good, but unless I have fairly strong teammates, I’m not going to be able to do anything spectacular.

Our team composition isn’t bad (Unholy DK, Prot Pally and Hunter), so I feel like we can end up being somewhat competitive with a little more practice. I’m hoping that Beast Mastery will allow us to overcome the slump we’re in, then maybe once our Pally’s up to speed a bit more I can respec back to SV or MM and make a run for our S7 weapons. Meanwhile, I’ll have a level 80 Chimaera chilling in the stable waiting to unleash his fury in 3.3. 😉

Anyway… combined with our need to shake things up, the increased survivability Beast Mastery will offer me, and the exciting pet buffs headed our way in 3.3, suddenly Beast Mastery is looking like a decent option right now. I’ll let you know how it works out. 😉

One thing worth mentioning… I had a tense 1v1 with a Ret last night in Wintergrasp. We were alone outside the fortress and I’d say the “duel” lasted nearly two minutes. He killed me with about 1% left, then he died about 2 seconds later to my poison DoTs.

The cool thing was… my pet was level 75, I was still glyphed for Survival, and he had 3 stacks of Tenacity. 😉 Maybe BM isn’t dead… I’ll let you know.

    • Sorry Perceuss.

I’ll try to get caught up on comments later today. Not only have I had a lot of outside-the-game distractions, but I’ve been playing WoW a little more lately. Blog always falls a little behind in these cases.

I hate going more than a few days without a post, but something’s always got to give. Lately it’s been the site.

  3. I played around with BM last season and it was fun but ultimately it just lacks utility. If you fail to either take out an opponent or cause them to use enough CDs your going to be frightening an uphill battle for the rest of the match. Hopefully the damage increase will help, because I found that although I was more survivable, the lack of damage BM have caused longer matches and put strain on my healers mana.

I’m looking forward to hearing how it goes.

  4. I second the BM PvP guide!

You had mentioned your interest in the Spider in your Survival guide, but if you go BM you should check out they Silithid.

The Venom Web Spray ability is similar to the Spider’s Web ability, except that it also has a Nature DoT AND after patch 3.3 the range on the Web Spray will be increased to 30 yds., up from 20.

    Keep up the great articles!

  5. 😀 Yay! You’re back! Thank god too… I was starting to question BM’s viability in the game. It’s nice to get reassured that my favorite spec can still outplay the more popular ones. 🙂

  6. Heh, welcome back Garwulf!

Needless to say, I’m delighted to have you back in BM, let us know how it goes for you.
I look at it this way: My Chimaera and I get in some good practice now, and then shred the Arena in 3.3

Care to post a BM PVP guide now that you’ve exhaustively covered SV?

    Hoping,

    Kazador

  7. Nice one fella!

Just tamed Grubthor the other day for soloing old dungeons in style. Was really torn between Grubthor and my Disembodied Jormungar (didn’t even go there for him, wanted to grind Ahn’Qiraj for mounts), but that yellow is just awesome!

  8. Hey Gar I am new to your blog and enjoying it.
I am in a similar situation to you and pvp. I try to be as good as I can but dont take it overly sereously. My priority is PVE.
I was beast mastery with beast cleave in 3v3. With all the recent BM changes and with my 3v3 team disbanding I decided to reroll survival pvp. I started playing 2v2 with a disc priest and BMs features are just not enough. Not enough defense capabilities or CC. Its just 10 seconds of pure pwnage while in bestial wrath.
The transition to survival pvp was hard at first but I am getting used to it.
Thanks for the articles and keep it up
