After spending a few days hunting down the rares in Molten Front, I came up with a convenient strategy that may prove helpful – or at least convenient – for those of you on the hunt.
There is a location I found on the NE edge of The Furnace that is a great lookout point for all 7 of the Molten Front rares. Standing in this one spot, you can check all of the spawn locations in under a minute.
I was continuing to use NPCScan while out hunting, but I found it to be largely unreliable, as most the time it was sending false alarms after having detected a hunter pet version of a rare.
Rather than clear the NPCScan cache every couple minutes, or ride around trying to target them, I found using Eagle Eye is a pretty efficient way to hunt for all of the rares at once.
The following screenshots show where to position your Eagle Eye target circle when trying to spot the various rares, as well as the resulting camera view when using Eagle Eye. Click the images to embiggen.
Deth’tilac
Just throw the target circle on the right edge of the Forlorn Spire.
Solix
Solix is inside a cave, which makes targeting him a little tricky. Move your target circle towards the top of the cave entrance, then slowly move it to the right until just before the center of your target circle disappears from view. This will position your sight just inside the cave, near the top of the entrance. Solix spawns in the lava pool on the right, with the thin stream of lava pouring in.
Anthriss
Position the target circle at the mouth of the crevasse between Ragnaros’ reach and the Widow’s Clutch.
Skarr / Karkin
Depending upon your game settings, you may not need to use Eagle Eye to scout for Skarr or Karkin at their northern spawn point, but if you do, just place the target circle at the edge of Fireplume Peak like this:
Skarr / Karkin / Kirix
Place your target circle at the southern edge of Fireplume Peak to look for Skarr or Karkin at their southern spawn location, or to see if Kirix is up patrolling around.
Skitterflame
To check for Skitterflame, place the target circle as shown. Hey look…she’s home!
Well there ya go… hopefully this little tip will make camping the Molten Front taming challenge pets a little bit easier for some of you. 🙂
You might want to try the eagle eye chain macro: /cast !Eagle Eye.
It lets you cast it, and recast from the spot where it landed, so you can travel around. But it doesn’t work if you have someone targeted. Also, npcscan will go off when you find something through eagle eye. That’s how I spotted my time-lost, camping on the frozen lake spawn and looking all the way to Brunnhildar where it just had spawned!
Awesome info, Kassiopeia! I’ll have to give that a try.
Eagle eye is one of our best abilities ever. It helped me spot and tame Skitter and almost Deth if I wasn’t griefed by another hunter…
I use it all the time in battlegrounds also! Its great for checking which flags are not being guarded, where zergs are going and It even detects hidden as if you were there (the whir sound and transparent figure) if close to your eagle eye spot.
Carnage, thanks for the info! I think I might try this out in AB or AV sometime. =)
Eagle eye is how I spotted Skarr without hopping the dreaded platforms, since he spawned on the other side. I could sit down by where you get the phoenix quests and watch the one platform where he is known to spawn, then Eagle Eye up to the other side of the area where he also spawns. Because if you don’t have the quests right there and you fall off… no druids to save your ass!
I haven’t used Eagle Eye since Wrath, but the last I checked it still requires a macro to chain cast. I’m at work and don’t have the specific macro syntax, unfortunately. I believe it’s /cast !Eagle Eye, but don’t quote me on it right now.
Good ideas, Gar. Never thought of using Eagle Eye like this; in fact I almost never used it–one time it bugged out and it left me wondering whether it’s worth it messing around with the skill at all.
