Tamarlane, Night Elf Hunter

December 16, 2009 By Tamarlane Leave a Comment

Night Elf Hunter with Worg

Hey there, I’m Tamarlane of the guild Omen, from the Lightninghoof server, and I’m going to be writing the occasional article on end game raiding, with a specific focus on hunter DPS optimization. While not all of my articles will focus on this specific topic, this is my general area of interest within the game, and thus, what I’ll predominantly be writing about.

I have been playing a hunter for about a year, I started playing WoW at the beginning of WoTLK, and am a complete addict, as evidenced by the fact that I’m now (attempting) to write articles about the massive sleep drain that is, in fact, this game.

I plan to write articles from primarily a Survival spec perspective, tho I reserve my right to occasionally dabble in MM and BM, as I enjoy those specs as well. 😉 I do plan an article (possibly a series of them) about attempting to use the methods I’ve seen from Kripparrian in his videos to maximize MM DPS, specifically things like rolling Serpent Sting on multiple targets. In the meantime, I have 2 and sometimes 3 MM hunters in my typical guild 25 man, and find that using their TSA with my SV talents is a bigger buff to my DPS than going MM myself, at this point in time.

I am not writing to preach about the right and wrong ways to hunter, nor am I holding myself forth as an expert on theorycrafting beyond using common sense and practical understanding of specific encounters. I’m not going to “maths” you to death, simply because I lack the interest (and frankly, education) to do so. I will express opinions you may or may not agree with, and I’ll be thrilled to receive feedback that’s constructive and to the point.

Beyond that, I’m happy to to be working with Garwulf, and look forward to churning out some (hopefullly) interesting and timely “stuffs” for you to consider.

– Tamarlane

Hunter Hit Cap Attained and Then Some

February 22, 2009 By Garwulf 2 Comments

After starting the week out at somewhere around a paltry 126 hit rating, I now have enough +hit on my gear to not only attain the cap, but to also re-gem if need be. With all of my new +hit blues and purples I am able to exceed the 263 hit rating (~8%) needed vs. bosses. Not only that, I’ve managed no less than 10 gear upgrades in the past week which is pretty solid I’d say. If you are LFM need 1 DPS, then G2G… I’m your man. 😉 I love the WotLK Dungeons.

Here’s a list of the loots I’ve gotten over the past week via one Malygos run, one Vaults run and an average of 2 heroics per night. Not too shabby me thinks.

  • Incisor Fragment – I’ve run heroic Drak’Tharon 3 times this past week and each time King Dred has dropped this trinket. It’s not bad, but I’d much rather have him give me his helm.
  • Pendant of the Outcast Hero – The first item I bought with my Emblems of Heroism.
  • Black Ice – Possibly my most favoritest 2h ever. BTW, check out the sexy Night Elf Hunter posing with this in the image on Wowhead. 😉
  • Dragon Slayer’s Sabatons – Really nice pre-raid Hunter boots.
  • Handgrips of the Savage Emissary – Good PvE improvement over my Swiftarrow Gauntlets.
  • Boots of the Neverending Path – Although they’re leather, these boots rock for Hunters. 66 hit rating, 51 agility and 122 attack power. I’m sporting these now over my Dragon Slayer’s Sabatons.
  • Heroes’ Cryptstalker Legguards – Easiest Dungeon set piece I’ve ever gotten. Dropped for me on a 10-man Vault of Archavon run that took all of about ten minutes. Why didn’t I start doing these sooner is what I’ve been asking myself..?!
  • Mirror of Truth – The second item I’ve purchased with Emblems of Heroism. And yes… it does proc off of ranged attacks… a lot. Definitely a fantastic Hunter trinket.
  • Mobius Band – Very nice stats for a Hunter. Drops off of Chrono-Lord Epoch in The Culling of Stratholme.
  • Hateful Gladiator’s Wristguards of Triumph – My only PvP-specific upgrade, but a decent one nonetheless.

Had I’d known earlier how fun the Dungeons were in Wrath of the Lich king I’d have been running them a lot sooner. I’m so accustomed to the pre-vanilla WoW days when a PuG heroic would sometimes mean a 3 hour wipefest only to end with someone going AWOL just before the final boss. Being the nice guy that I am, I always felt bad about leaving a group high and dry in a late-night instance so I’d ususally end up sticking with it until the eventual implosion. However, these new WotLK dungeons are extremely painless and very profitable compared to the old days.

I’m all about the LFG channel now. 🙂

Garwulf’s checklist

December 14, 2008 By Garwulf Leave a Comment

Level Skinning to 450 – Easy peasy lemon squeezy… achieved this in the first or second day.

Level Leatherworking to 450 – 443 at the moment. Last few points are going to be a b@#%h.

Level Cooking to 450 – … sigh. I really wanted Iron Chef, but then I realized I was a mere mortal. No server firsts for me.

Tame King Krush – I may eventually. Now that I have Loque he’s not a priority. Although he owns my face when I try to tame him, it’s still unfinished business.

Tame Loque’nahak – One of the, if not thee most satisfying moments of my WoW, uh…career..?

Hit Revered reputation with the Kalu’ak for my Whale-Stick Harpoon – One of the easiest rep grinds ever. A pretty decent pre-raid 2H as well, that is until I get my Runeblade of Demonstrable Power.

Reach level 80 – Took me about 4 weeks. Not too bad. The journey is half the fun.

Craft my Giantmaim pieces – The legs are nice, but I’m a little disappointed in the bracers. Eaglebane Bracers are just as good, if not better for a BM Hunter with Careful Aim IMO. I’ll probably use the Eaglebane in instances until I get more hit rating, and use the Giantmaim for everything else.

Loquenahak

Loque'nahak Dings!

Get my homeboy Drackmire to craft me a Nesingwary 4000 – Oh yeah. Not only do guns sound better, this things packs a mean wallop. I doubt I’ll be upgrading it for awhile, so money well spent.

Level Loque’nahak to 80 – Spirit Strike and the unbelievable overall awesomeness of this pet made the grind from 76 to 80 quite easy and enjoyable.

Get MONGO to 80 – My Apeus Tankus Extremus. He’s probably the best all-around pet in my stable. Now he’s a level 80 A$$ Kickin’ Stompadin.

Get my PvP pet to level 80 in time for Season 5– Got work to do here. I’m thinking CABRÓN, my trusty Crab will be my Arena companion.

Find a 2v2 partner for Season 5 – I haven’t done enough research to know what’s going to work here. Most likely I’ll try to pair with a friend to start off with just so I don’t miss out on the points.

Find 3v3 and 5v5 partners for Season 5 – The healer from my previous 3v3 team is still sitting at 70. 😕 Not sure what I’ll be doing there. 5v5… eh. In my experience it’s been very difficult to get 5 decent players together who can consistently be available at a set time, and who don’t team hop.

Charm the pants off of the Duchess and her fellow Death Knights for their awesome wares – Working on it. Runeblade of Demonstrable Power, Spaulders of the Black Arrow, and Arcanum of Torment are all things that a newly turned level 80 Hunter needs. 🙂

Finish my User Interface and re-script my macros – High on the list right now. I’ve just been so busy trying to gain rep, level pets and get geared when I am playing I haven’t wanted to take the time away from those things. After I get slapped around a bit more in the BGs I’ll probably take a break and re-do my macros. As for the UI, it’s almost done. I see a few minor things (that will take a bit to change) that I’d like to adjust, but I’m about 90% happy with it.

Take my Spirit Beast (currently named Loquenahak) to Sholazar Basin and have him sit at the spawn locations while I’m nearby and Shadowmelded watching the fun – I’m not sure if I’m mischievious enough to do this yet, but the thought has crossed my mind. Even better would be to hide out of sight and control Loque through Eyes of the Beast and just pace around naturally at the spawn points. Could be fun. Check back for Garwulf’s Funniest Hunter Videos soon. Mwahahahahahaha… 😈

Update my blogsite – Check.

Level 80

Halfway there, and on to Grizzly Hills

November 26, 2008 By Garwulf Leave a Comment

Well, I dinged 75 the other night and leveling almost seems easier the closer I get to 80. That’s good I suppose. The other thing I’ve noticed with Wrath of the Lich King is that the quests and the landscapes become more enjoyable as you progress. You might say, “well yeah… it’s new content”, but I don’t feel that way. This expansion blows the doors off of The Burning Crusade. The new artwork, storyline, cinematics, etc… WotLK is the goods.

Dragonblight is a really cool area for questing. The Borean Tundra was great, but like I said, the artwork and intensity improves and grows as you go along. The cinematic of the Wrath Gate battle is absolutely insane. Kudos to Blizzard for going that route instead of just having npc’s running around in the game world acting it out. That was a very unexpected and highly enjoyable end to the Dragonblight quest series.

It was funny though… just after I earned the achievement my computer seemed to go all haywire. I was a little concerned at first, then when I figured out what was happening I rushed to throw my headphones on and enjoy the show. 🙂 I had seen a mention of the cinematic in the forums, so after a few seconds of “wtf is up with my mac..?!”, I was like, doh..! this must be it!

The quest chain that follows that event is incredible. It was pretty surreal running through Ogrimmar without getting my head kicked in. I’ve only been in there twice. Once was pre-TBC when I made a level one Orc to spam general offering gold for someone to spawn Sian-Rotam for taming. The other time was much more exciting. 😀 I was running through the city on my 19 Draenei Paladin to get to the entrance of Ragefire Chasm. Good times. Only took me three deaths to get there, so that wasn’t too bad. Especially since I was by myself. O.O

Unfortunately, The Battle for the Undercity quest was bugged for me. I spent at least 45 minutes running around the place, but no one was home. I later abandoned it, but then Wrynn wouldn’t give it back to me. I submitted a ticket, but have yet (13 hours later) to receive an e-mail response from Blizz. From what I’ve read on the forums and on Thottbot, the quest doesn’t always initiate right away, so I’m guessing I must’ve jumped the gun or something. Ah well, no biggie… plenty of other juicy content to sink my teeth into.

Edit* I just realized that Medallion of Heroism does not share a cooldown with the Battlemaster’s trinkets. And… the heal can crit! I’m all over this thing. I’ll be riding Blizz’s ass until they reset it for me. 😐

For the first 15 minutes or so it was pretty cool running around an abandoned Undercity. Only other time I’d been there was to try and kill Sylvanas. I can’t remember if we succeeded or not, but me thinks it was negative. I seem to remember there being only about 20-25 of us, and the Horde soon flocked to her chamber to send us on a few corpse runs ’til we finally conceded.

Since I don’t play Horde (yet), I wasn’t sure if all the gruesome decor was there pre-WotLK. The laboratory-type setting with the abomination guys was pretty great. Being a huge fan of the Diablo series, I appreciate some of the more graphic and mature content that pops up occasionally. Back when I first started playing nearly three years ago, I thought the sinister graphics around Ilkrud Magthrull‘s haunt in Ashenvale were so cool. Prior to The Tower of Althalaax quest series, all of the content had been pretty tame. WoW’s nowhere near Diablo in terms of the sinister tone and the graphic nature of the game, but it’s neat to see the dev team dabble in that area now and again.
