Top DPS Exotic Pet for BM Hunters in 3.1 is… Chimera..?

DPS meter with the ChimeraI conducted my second round of scientific studies concerning exotic pet DPS. The results may surprise you. Out of my three exotic pets, the Cunning family pet came out on top. That’s right… my Chimera was head and shoulders above the Devilsaur and Spirit Beast.

I was a bit surprised at first, so I ran the test two more times. Strangely enough, the DPS only improved on the subsequent tests.

Previously I had tested my Devilsaur and Spirit Beast, attaining 746.7DPS and 664.2DPS respectively. My Chimera posted 797.6 in the first test, 804.7 in the second, and 818.1 in the final test which was an overall figure from tests 2 and 3.

I was expecting the Chimera to be competitive, but I had no idea that it would come out on top. The test may be a bit skewed due to the fact that the target dummy’s health is below the 35% threshold where Feeding Frenzy comes into play.

However, if we were to use Loque’nahak’s DPS as a gauge for base damage, 744DPS would be the end result taking Feeding Frenzy into account. The Chimera’s weakest performance was still over 50DPS above that mark. O.O

I’m not too surprised with these results, as I had foreseen the Cunning family pets emerging as raid worthy in 3.1.

After reviewing the screenshots, I saw that two of the tests ended with him not at full happiness. I’m going to run one more test with my Chimera possibly tonight, and another with my wolf. I’ll post those results probably tomorrow.

  1. well, i’ve noticed that the core hound has top dps. i have no numbers atm, but he crits much more than my spirit bear of rex, and his pvp abilities are greater. however, after 4.01 the spirit beast has received a heal, so it may be a contender in pvp, but its dps has suffered a hit without the strike.

  2. I think a Chimera is a good “all around” pet. Whether it’s “the best” or not, is up to the Hunter to decide. I don’t really think it’s possible to excel at high levels of both PvE and PvP with the same pet. I do however think that any hunter who chooses BM as their second spec should definitely consider devoting one stable slot to a Chimera.

For PvP, you’d be hard pressed as a BM Hunter to find a better choice. For PvE, I think the Chimera is also great, but it may not be tops for the min/maxers. For boss fights I think the Chimera will shine, but its benefits may not be as great on the short burstier fights such as trash pulls.

I am not a true theorycrafter, nor have I ever used a DPS spreadsheet. So far, from what I’ve read people are claiming wolves and Devilsaurs to be the “top dps pets”. This may very well be true. I have all three of these pets, so in time I’ll be able to test this out for myself.

I wanted to shed some light on a pet that I believe to be an awesome choice for all types of play. Even though stationary target dummy testing is not really a “true test”, I was able to demonstrate in my tests that no matter how you slice it, the Chimera outperformed the others.

This build: http://www.wowhead.com/?petcalc#cibo00fh0Mk0b is what I would start with. For PvP, the final 3 points could be put into Grace of the Mantis and Roar of Sacrifice. For PvE, you could go with Cornered and Bullheaded, which also have their place in PvP as well.

  3. I have a Nuramoc too, after 5 days hunting him alone. It´s a surprise to see what you are discussing. It’s the first hunter to put Chimera at top DPS beast. Do you thing there is possible to be a pure BM Hunter at PVE and PVP using a Chimera??? What would be the spec for any one??? And the talents for Chimera in any condition too??

    P.S have Loque’nahak too =)
