My User Interface

I forget… are you people still interested in this? Let me know, because I was thinking about putting a post together that features all of my addons, along with maybe making a downloadable zip file of my UI compilation.

If you guys aren’t into it, that’s cool too. Just let me know…

yeah ill just have to train my eyes for sure. i have Tourettes so my eyes tend to wander a bit when im super tired or hella frustrated, which in small part is perhaps why its so difficult for my eyes to adapt.

i did scale down my buffs which actually look really nice and freed up some space. and i hear you about functionality versus style. im not into super flashy shit either besides Sexymap. i like a SIMPLISTIC straight forward look. while some hotroders may put chameleon flames and 97 inch rims on their 69 Z28 Camaro ill take a flat black paint job any day an d still keep up with them.

my computer is pretty solid, spec-wise. im running an Intel Core 2 Duo OC’d to ~3.1, Nforce 280i SLI mobo, Gforce GTX 260 Core 216 898mb with 4gig of Oz DDR2 on Vista 64 bit Business all on a Raptor HD. im all about the biggest bang for my proverbial buck when it comes to FPS though.

this is all my addon usage above 100kb – http://img256.imageshack.us/img256/1540/memory.png

There’s definitely a compromise between style and functionality. Some of the best players have the shittiest looking UIs, yet it’s got all the relevant and important info right where they need it.

My approach to creating a UI comp is more function than style. I don’t go all out on the cosmetic touches that other people use, but I still want it to look sharp.

I’m kind of spoiled being that I have a powerhouse computer. I haven’t really worried too much about addon memory usage, but thanks for the info on Chinchilla and SLDT.

When I first moved my unit frames down near where they are now, I had the most difficult time adapting, and ended up moving them back to the standard position a few days later. Eventually I revisited that setup and this time forced myself to adapt. That was maybe 9 months ago.

Now that I’ve gotten used to it, it feels clumsy the other way. Your eyes seem to have to travel to far from the action in order to view health, mana, debuffs, etc. It’s just a matter of preference I think. Either way is fine, it’s just whatever works best for you, go with that.

  4. im also gonna mess around with putting mine and my pets unit frames down by my bars. i tried that once before but i just couldnt get used to not looking in the corner to see our health.

haha pet names are my speciality 🙂

sexymap, believe it or not, uses LESS memory than Chinchila does. i went through your list of mods and picked it up to see how it ran. it was running like 500kb while my sexymap runs 300kb. thanks for the Tiptac btw….i love that mod.

my buffs probably COULD get shrunk down a tad….but im perfectly comfortable with their size. ill fuss with it when i get back home tonight. i dont know if i have any debuffs in that shot (too lazy to click) but those are rather large only so i cant miss them when i NEED to see wtf is on me.

ive tried desperately to reduce my addon memory usage but everything else i find that does the same thing ends up using MORE memory. oh and thanks for the azcastbar or w/e its called. MUCH less memory usage than quartz by far. i played around with the fubar replacement thing you posted but i dont like its lack of plugin functionality that fubar has. plus, truth be told, it didnt use any if much less memory.

      Nice pet name! lol. 😉

There are two things I would probably change first off to make things flow better and give you a bit more room.

Unless you really like it, I’d abandon the flashy runic display around your minimap and go with a simple square. Next, I’d shrink down your buff and buff timers.

    • Hey Dracky!

I never think to take screenshots during a fight. I need to, I know.

Whatever you contribute is a bonus, so no need to forgive you. You’re always gonna be welcome. Just throw something together when it’s convenient.

Looking forward to seeing you in TotC. 😀

  7. I’m definitely interested in more info about your UI. It’s one major area where I think I need some changes and know there are things I could be doing differently to help (and enjoy) game play.

Any thoughts and tips you can provide are appreciated.

  8. I would love a better interface setup, but I’m one of those people that needs everything accessible because I am too lazy to do a setup for each purpose.

  9. Yes, I am at least interested in your addons and UI compilations, and it sounds like others are as well. It would definitely be appreciated by me, as I have not really explored UI addons/mods before and am looking for some guidance.
