Hi Lodgers,

I checked through all the pages of PVP & Arena and didn't see another thread similar to how i hope this one pans out, though Takass' PVP Antics thread came close.

What I'm hoping to achieve here is a a compendium of memorable fights you have engaged in while PVPing. I was thinking that if we can share why the fights were memorable, how we fought them, the outcome, and our afterthoughts, we may all gather some ideas of our own to practice and put to use in the field of combat.

I'll kick this off:

Warsong Gulch (Level 42, Darrwyn, Moon Guard)

I was chasing down the enemy flag carrier, and caught him near the entrance to their tunnel. He died, and one of my melee team mates sent the flag home. At about the same time, the fanfare alerted us to the enemy flag being captured. I moved into the waiting zone between tunnel and ramp to see which way our FC came. He chose ramp and we had a rather uneventful run to our own tunnel. That's when the fun began. Just before entering the tunnel, I swung the camera around to see where the enemy were... there was a sea of red behind us, and closing fast. We had a few melee guys with us, so I thought they would at least thin the numbers chasing the FC up the tunnel.

Now I like to lead the way up the tunnel... if the enemy has laid any traps, better I or my pet set them off than my FC. I popped a Swiftness Potion and ran ahead of the FC. I laid my Immolation Trap, turned so I had my back to the flag room. By this time, the FC had caught up with me. We proceeded up the tunnel side by side, me looking backward. The first of the enemy burst through our screen of melees. I targetted him and started with my Instant macro, pouring Widow Venom, Tranq Shot and Arcane Shot into him till out of focus. My pet finished him off. We were approaching the intersection leading to the roof by this time.

Out of the maelstrom following us comes a cat. I hit my targeting macro (selects enemy player) and it ignores the cat and chooses the master. I had another hunter in my sights. He shot our FC with a Concussive Shot and his forward progress slowed so that I moved ahead of him. I started in with my own return fire, (still running backwards) and Intimidation becomes available. Next shot sees the enemy hunter stunned by my own concussive shot, giving our FC a slight reprieve from the shots pouring into him. The hunter goes down (and his pet is now off the FC) and I quickly lay my Freezing Trap as we enter the Flag Room.

It immediately snags a warrior who had made it past all the melee support behind us and as I back into the Flag Room I wait. Our FC plants the flag! I let the Warrior have it with my Concussive Shot as the Flag Carrier, minus the flag and also a warrior closes with him, face to face. My Bird of Prey (I finally named him Grimfeather) chooses this very second to snatch at the enemy warrior disarming him. He put up a brave fight, but weaponless he could do nothing about the hammering our former FC was giving him, or the arrows I was pounding into him. He went down, ending one of the most memorable fights of my WoW experience.

I had fought the whole journey up the tunnel and into the flag room going backwards! I know the enemy were concentrating on the Flag Carrier which was why I was unscathed the whole way. If they had targeted me, it would have been a different ball game I expect.

What was one of your memorable fights?

Cheers

D

Warsong Gulch (Takaas, Argent Dawn)

Horde had three Hunters, which included myself. None of us were from the same server. The match starts and one of the other Hunters yells, "Help me guard the flag!" So I remain as well as the third Hunter. So there were three Hunters guarding the Horde flag now.

The Alliance never once made it out of our flag room with our flag. We just mowed them down. It was epic how the three of us worked like a team, even though we had never met before this point.

Awesomely told stories, I'm proud to be a Hunter and a little teary eyed at your Awesomeness guys! I'm just now getting into my groove with PvP and hope to have some stories of my own to post soon.

Generally speaking, most of my PvP is in Tol Barad, and in the last few nights I've participated in three successful defenses (out of three) each ending with a pretty Epic battle in one particular keep or another. Two battles in a row it was ICG, with seemingly the entirety of BOTH armies squared off in the corridor with the flag between us. That same sort of "sea" of red taking up half my screen with multiple traps exploding and freezing the ground amongst us. It truly felt like a War between the factions.

The third, last night, we ended up all defending WV (not the best tactic, but it worked) and we were down on the ground, up the steps, back to the flag, and just decimated the Allies- they broke like a wave of water on the rocks of the keep and the Horde defenders.

Pumped up barely describes the feeling, lol.

@ Kruzz  Sounds like an awesome fight my friend… (Tak uses less words than I ever do! lol).

@ Ozolin It's amazing how many epic battles occur in Tol Barad. I swear if you put 5 defenders in 2 places and 30 others in one, you'd never lose control, but getting people to do it is nigh on impossible. I was in one such event this morning. The fighting was so intense it was anticlimactic when all of a sudden it just finished with Alliance gaining the upper hand for a vital few seconds to seal the victory. Damn!

It's exactly moments like these that this thread was designed for. Just this morning before coming to work, I was in a WSG and Alliance capped. One of my Horde colleagues immediately said, "Another loss!" And this was with 17 minutes to go! So often it's that sort of defeatest attitude that loses the contest, not lack of skill or teamwork. I had a quick look at the scoreboard, and the pesimist was way down the chart; obviously he was spending more time typing than fighting!

Whenever I'm playing on Jubei'Thos (Oceanic server) and I see that sort of comment I have to respond, "You're definitely not a Queenslander!" (@ those outside of Eastern seaboard of Oz, we have annual state vs state football series and Queensland has won the last 6 years in a row, often with a last minute score to win the game, if not the series!)

Keep the tales of stoic defense and heroic turnarounds coming Hunters!

Cheers,

D

Most memorable fight was back in Wrath, me and a fellow hunter from my guild when I was playing on Spirestone.

We were doing the fishing daily out in Sholazar, and some alliance tried to jump us, it was like 3 or 4 of them at the start, eventually evolved into them having like 6 or so people against the two of us.  Anywho, what happened was the two of us had equipped our fishing poles, but otherwise left our gear on, so we switched back to our regular weapons and had ourselves a grand old time taking out the people foolish enough to try and jump us, we must have sat there for a good 45+ minutes taking 4-5 of them out before getting killed ourselves, over and over.

I've had loads of memorable fights, but probably the one that sticks out most was a 2 hour Warsong Gulch battle that I competed in back in the early BC-era — on my 19 hunter.

We used to schedule premade Warsong Gulch matches with other twink guilds from our battlegroup. We'd set a time a few days or weeks out, get both of our A Teams assembled and then go at it. These were what we considered to be 'ranked' matches. Each guild would pit their best players against the others' then duke it out.

It was strictly for fun and bragging rights. During the time I was active with my guild, I competed in five 'ranked' premades, all of which we won. One of them lasted for 2hrs and 7 minutes!

The following match wasn't far behind, at 1hr, 59 minutes.

WSG Twink PremadeImage Enlarger

This particular match is most memorable to me because it was the first one I competed in, and it was against what was considered to be the top twink guild in Vengeance.

This screenshot is nearly 4.5 years old, and before I started using addons of any sort. Notice all of the tricks up my sleeve in the toolbars. Twinking was an absolute blast back in those days. icon_smile

I was part of the black ops division on offense, which meant I was going into hostile territory often, with little chance of survival — trying to recover the enemy's flag icon_wink

There was no debuff back then, so flag carriers never became vulnerable to attack. It basically boiled down to one team exploiting a mistake the other team made. Apart from that, it was a pure slugfest.

If you look at the leader board, you'll see that myself and the other hunter combined for over 250K damage. That was an insane amount of damage back then.

I miss those days… Twinking back in vanilla and TBC was some of the best PvP fun I've had in WoW.

@ Gar: Holy carp, you're on Vengeance? I'm in the same battlegroup slugging it out in the 20-24 bracket… =D

Let's see if I have memorable BGs…there are quite a few, often involving Alterac Valley and Strand of the Ancients in WotLK.

One time in AV we successfully rallied our troops to defend the Iceblood Tower, cap Stonehearth GY and destroy Balinda after a really bad start. We were rushing along the cliffside pushing hard towards the Alliance boss when a few allies decide to attack from below the cliff. I sic my Chimera on a Warlock–and watched as it chased him DOWN the cliff and for maybe 150 yards before the lock finally bit it. No escaping a flying pet with Dive on.

During a SotA game we tried unsuccessfully to defend the beachhead from Alliance players. I hopped on a turret and started laying down suppressive fire on the ground near the wharves when this Forsaken guy walks up to me and says "you look like a retard". I figured the Alliance had already smashed through the other gate–and right I was–so I hop off the turret and do my best to defend. Sadly we lost that game, but when the scoreboard came up I was at the top of the Horde kill list…and the guy who called me a retard was never seen again.

My latest epic fight didn't actually consist of a big battle, but a somewhat hilarious-in-hindsight 1v1. We had been holding the Lumber Mill in Arathi Basin and were leading the resource node race 3-2, when I suddenly discover that most of my teammates at LM had left to help cap or defend other nodes. This was a bit unnerving since earlier, an enemy Rogue had been toying with us and kept sapping me and the other defenders at random without breaking stealth.

I was running around the flag when I got sapped, and out popped a Nelf Rogue. I sic my Bat on her, pop my trinket, tag her with Hunter's Mark, Explosive Shot and Serpent Sting, slow her down with Wing Clip and finally Disengaged…

…right into a tree trunk.

5 yards behind me.

It took me a moment to regain composure, but seeing as we were both slowed down, I gained enough range to be able to get out of the deadzone and shoot her with more Explosive Shot, Concussive Shot and Serpent Sting, finally resulting in her death before she could whittle away my remaining HP. I let out a sigh of relief and started bandaging when suddenly 6 fellow Hordies come running right up the other end of the LM to get to the Stables, with the very last one in line (a Shaman) popping a heal on me. I promptly thank him and just grinned.

It wasn't after the battle that I found out something even funnier. Horde had won that BG and the scoreboard was shown. While I wasn't at the top of the charts, I noticed that the second highest scorer–the same Nelf that tried to kill me–had ONLY ONE DEATH. :]

If a Tauren Hunter and a Tauren Druid marry and have children, you will end up with BraveStarr and Thirty-Thirty.

Long time reader, but never posted on the forums. Anyway, here it goes…

I think the picture pretty much sums up a recent WSG:

WSG LeaderboardImage Enlarger

Yup, thats me at the top of the list, sorted by damage done. But just look at the HK's!. By the time we'd capped our first flag it was pretty obvious that the Horde were having issues working as a team.

We capped the 2nd flag and then decided to go on a rampage. 10 Alliance gathered around the Horde GY. It was an absolute meat grinder. There was no sport in it at all, but we were like a pack of hounds with the scent on blood in our nostrils; we were going crazy. Not really a post about amazing skill or team synergy; just a good ol' fashioned blood-letting!

Eventually it all got to much for one of my softer stomached comrades and he capped the 3rd flag with about 8 minutes left to run on the timer. A little narked, as I was keen to get my 20 Killing Blows to 0 Death Achievement icon_sad

I've never been a fan of graveyard camping. it's just slaughter. I suppose some fellow Horde players partake in it from time to time, but never in a BG I've been in. It seems to be an Alliance tactic, as effective as it is brutal. It gets so the challenge is to get away from the GY so you can apply buffs, and shields...

Welcome to the Lodge, Disengage.

Don't get me wrong, I've been on the receiving end of graveyard camps many a time. Was nice that the show was on the other foot for once

The WSG battles I get in are usually either..........

(a) Alliance running right over us. Match ends in short time.

(b) Alliance graveyard camps us the entire match.

(c) We manage a win but its a REALLY tough, drawn out battle.

I've never partaken in graveyard camping, mostly because we are never able to. (Not that I would anyways.)

It's funny (ha ha) to me that when in a Horde (most if not all the time) BG, they whinge about how bad Horde is, and how Ally always win...

When I was levelling an Ally hunter (for a while...) they complained about the same thing.

So...

QQ happens on both sides of the faction divide, which lends weight to my theory that more QQ= less win...

Cheers,

D

I was working with my 3's team hunter druid loc combination not the strongest of all combinations but we are in it for fun anyway. Come up against a 2 dk and holy pally team. so we immediatly started after the holy pally finally got him down the two dk's seemed to be confused whether to go after lock of me they kept bouncing between both of us then finally lock went down. then they split and concentrated on both the druid and i had 1 of the dk's down to about 20k life and the druid went down leaving me. unfortunately one of the weakest of our team. (skill wise) i concentrated on the 1st dk finished him off and then started on the 2nd dk i must have disengaged ten times trying to keep away from him Loque was doing his best finally ended up taking him out with 5k health i was so jazzed up and tensed up at the same time i had to go and smoke a cigerette just to relax. one of the few times i got to save the day for our team. We came up against them two more times after that and they both concentrated on me to take me out everytime LOL. probably the best match that i will always remember.

To show how little I know in PvP- I was in a Twin Peaks battle (through random BG queue and the first time I'd ever heard of Twin Peaks in WoW) and quickly realized, "Ok, this is a capture the flag BG." After a little while, killing, getting killed, I happened to draw a DK away from our flag carrier and took him down, just my pet & I. I carried on and killed some more and then was killed by a group of Allies, including the DK. He /laughed at me. >.< Loser. Joke was on him because just about the time I was saying to myself, "This isn't going well for us," I see the Horde win and I got an achievement for a perfect victory! LOL

I am such a n00b.

Warsong Gulch (Lasarina, Argent Dawn)

This happened to me last night. For a while, I've been doing wsg rep farming since i'm only 5.5k away from getting the Conqueror title and I queued up for another one. What I was up against was a 9 man premade from Bloodhoof in session. Naturally, my first reaction to this was "Oh Shit!" given I don't have a very good track record against 5+ man premade.

That assumption was blow away a bit. They were somewhat bad. Why? for a whole 7 minutes. I kited a subtlety rogue, a holy pally, an arcane mage, and a DK all by myself! Top that with the fact that I spent most of the time never going above 50% health. if it were just those 4, I never would have died but they must have told their team mates "Get that hunter!".

Although we did lose, I did find a gem when I kited that many for that long. Just don't ask me to give you a lot of details how I did it. I was running in "gotta keep moving, gotta stay away" mode.

p.s. I've been following the site for a while, it's just that I've never registered up until now.

Hi Shroudviper, welcome to the Lodge. That WSG sure sounds like a memorable fight alright.

Enjoy the Lodge,
