Hey guys, first of all I'd like to introduce myself since I'm new to the forum ^_^. I'm Huntarted (Yes that's my actual character name) I play on Black Dragonflight Horde. I have a question that I just can't really figure out all on my own so I was wondering if some advice/feedback could be given!
I've been doing some research and I've noticed that most of the top PvP hunters are all MM. Now.. I can see why because of silencing shot and a few other abilities but when you look at BM you get:
-Crouching Tiger, Hidden Chimera
-Bestial Wrath (Makes you immune to fears)
-Kindred Spirits for that extra focus
-Beast Mastery so you can tame exotic pets such as a chimaera for its' awesome slow ability or the core hound for its' amazing cast reduction debuff.
Another reason why I see BM as a better spec is because when all your cool downs are popped, you can do massive amounts of DPS to an enemy player and at the same time not be feared or stunned or all that (with bestial wrath).
Yes I know that silencing shot is important, however; for example.. you can easily distract shot a caster and at the same time if it's a lock/mage you can time bestial wrath with its' CC (fear, sheep etc..). In my opinion, that's worth giving up silencing shot if you think about all the other factors!
Now for MM.. True shot aura is good but I mean, it's not THAT much of a help. Perhaps if you're doing 3's or 5's and have an arcane mage that gives you that 3% extra damage (as a BM you get 3% extra damage with ferocious insiriation) then yes maybe I recommend going MM because that way your main focus us CC's and Burst dps (aimed shot chimera shot etc..)
What do you guys think? I want to know why so many hunters go MM for PvP.
Thanks!

I've tried both BM & MM for PvP, and while I think for me it's more of a comfort thing, I have far greater success as BM. I don't have any measurable proof that BM is *better* but I find my survivability to be much greater and my FUN factor to be much higher as a result when I'm running PvP as BM.

Thanks!
The main reasons are:
- Silencing Shot – Cast interrupt and 3 sec spell lockout.
- Readiness – Instantly resets all cooldowns.
- Better sustained burst damage.
MM also has the additional slow from Concussive Barrage, the speed buff from Posthaste and the heal from Chimera.
Do note that Bestial Wrath only causes your pet to be immune to any and all CC — not the player. The Beast Within will break you out of CC lik a trinket, but sadly, the immunity went bye bye awhile back. (https://huntsmanslodge.com/386…..tery-buff/)
MM definitely has its advantages, but so does BM, as you'd mentioned. I've always enjoyed Beast Mastery for PvP and will continue to do so. (https://huntsmanslodge.com/102…..ild-redux/)

Hi Huntarted, welcome to the Lodge.
It's always hard to follow Gar, he's such an awesome authority, even if he is Alliance! *dig!
I think there are also a few factors that stem from beyond what has been mentioned…
Beast Mastery seemed to become the black sheep, the unwanted step child, during the Wrath Era, and as such, a lot of players went MM or SV and having learned their spec, don't want to rock a boat that is working for them.
MM and SV are still the specs of choice for PvE, and my guess is that a lot of casual PvPers will choose to modify a spec they already know, rather than learn a new one.
Playstyle is another factor. I have three hunters, at different stages in the levelling process and all from different specs, but they are all PvP. I'm not that good a defense (I try to attack my way out of trouble… orcish mentality!), and I'm finding my BM has a better chance of getting out of trouble than the others because when he comes to help, my pet hit's harder than the other specs' pets, even allowing for level. I'm guessing hunters who are better than staying at range than I am, choose the higher burst specs because they can manage to stay at range and keep those shots hitting home.
As for battleground performance, it's hard to say who is really the most effective. A lot of my performance stems from what role I play. If I'm guarding a node, and bad guys don't come, I don't get high damage or high kill counts. But if bad guys come a lot, I get a lot of both. If, on the other hand, I'm in a hunting party chasing down targets, I tend to get high kills and damage counts.
Each and every bg will be different. Don't worry about what spec is on the top of the tree… especially kill shots… as it's not necessarily an indication of effectiveness or prowess. There are glory hounds who don't play what the team needs and chase kills… often joining late and taking the killing blow another team mate has set up. High damage is also a matter of luck as much as skill… if you're in the thick of the fighting, you will cause damage, if you're guarding a tower, a resource, a healer, a flag runner etc, you may not get the stats others do, but you're still doing your job, and that's what counts, in my opinion.
I'm playing all three specs for a reason… and hopefully that reason will be gracing these pages one day… but I worry less about what others do, and more about what works for me. It may be what others recommend or advise, it may not, but it's all about what works for me, and in my mind, that's the key to this whole game.
Cheers,
D

Having PvPed as both MM and BM here is my two cents worth:
If you're not running with a team and just doing random battlegrounds, BM comes out on top just because of the fact BM has more “get out of trouble” options.
If you are running with a team/group and /or doing arena, I think MM is a good choice. I believe MM is a more “sniper” type play, you sit back and burn down your enemies while your team mate(s) get in their face so to speak.
I'm not saying that these are “set in stone” ideas, but just my personal thoughts.
As for SV, it is possible to PvP as, but with key abilities being dispellable, they lose quite a bit of damage.

Thank you guys all so much for the feedback!

So in your opinion, would you choose BM or MM when it comes to 2's? I'm running 2's with a resto shammy and I don't see a way for me to just sit back and burst, we're constantly having to CC and run around. I can see how MM could be practical for 5s maybe even 3s.. but I don't see how it can be affective in 2's IMO.

Your best bet in 2's is a double DPS setup. With a healer you may find you get pillar kited and you cant do enough dps to kill anyone. I've had success with BM/Feral but BM/Enhancement Shammy is good too. Both these setups have excellent burst damage. Don't loose your healer tho, keep him for 3's
