So I have Ashtail out in the new zones. He'll just suddenly go and kill critters! Sometimes he'll even aggro some mobs. Is this a feature?

I put “Archie” away for now. I didn't get him to 
before Cata and he wasn't being very helpful when I played the other night. I didn't have him on aggressive and a couple of times he darted off towards another critter. I decided there was just too much going on for him, excitement overload. Sort of like the YoYo with a new Wii game. =)

Takaas, the only time I've set my pet on aggressive was at Mount Hyjal where you need to kill lots of little flame things. Default is always defensive when I'm questing.

Same thing here Ashtail will sudenly rush off after a critter.

Well it seems the fox AI is acting a little like a trained animal, instead of an unthinking automaton. This should be happening so some degree with all pets. Who hasn't had their dog get distracted by something? While I agree it would be frustrating (my bear tends to react to agro on npcs)and players) I don't particularly want it to, but that's why we have a follow command, to get him/her back into line.
Of course, there needs to be a balance, with a level 20 pet being much more distractable/random than a level pet, but bring on the realism.

One thing that I've read on this is that when the fox uses its special ability, it puts EVERY creature in range on its aggro table and then will proceed to attacke them all until they are eliminated. I think there is a thread on the official warcraft hunter forum that addresses this. Check there maybe. =)

I was leveling Pepper the other day with me, and having the same action happen. I just put him on passive and made use of my pedsend macro. But I just have a normal red fox, cause soo many people have ashtail… that the red fox is more rare then the silver =P So it's not just a type of fox it's all.
Horns and Hooves = +15 DPS

I was doing something similar. Back to the basics because no one's using them: Striped Nightsaber, Golden Gryphon, and Nightsaber pet.

Actually, that's super useful to me right now. My guild (at my pursuasion) is grinding for the 50k critter kills to get the armadillo pup vanity pet, so my fox killing critters on his own would be convenient. Think I'll start questing with him.
Like a lot of you, I've avoided the white one because they're oddly common. I went with traditional red and get a ton of comments on him.
