So yesterday, for reasons yet unkown I decided to do some practicing on a target dummy (no, not a mage in PvP) and I noticed my DPS was so low compared to the 'norm' my pet put a paper bag over its head. So here's the question. When I'm doing my spiffy BM shot rotation n I look at the stylin pie graph in recount what type of percentage would be considered 'normal' for auto-shot? Me thinks I'm not spamming the cast shots fast enough and doing too many autos but I dunno.

Do you have a regular set of gear and a PvP set? If your testing on a raiding level dummy, your numbers will be off because your hit rating is lower in PvP gear. Also, I've been told and heard that target dummies aren't the greatest to judge actual dps by. They are good for testing your dps, but not good enough to judge where you are actually at dps wise. I know when I test my Ret Pallie on target dummies I can hit 20k dps regularily, but when on actual runs I'm running at about 17k on him. Just as an example.

What are you doing as a "rotation" out of curiosity?

Tak-yup have a reg set-it's more a combo of both. Whatever mix and match gave me the highest stats for PvE that is available to me given I don't raid or run 5 man heriocs for valor (hence this post as I may want to to get the PvP top end gear so I'll need the valor pts). I think it's up on Armory now as I'm runnin Karazhan rep grind.

Basic Rotation is KC, Arcane, Cobra, rinse repeat. Given the 6 sec cooldown on KC, I sometimes get off an Arcane in between without getting focus starved. All shots have AotH and Focus Fire macroed in. Not ideal but given I solo I don't really need the 5 stacks, besdies it wont proc til it's ready. Rapid fire when it's available with fervor to avoid focus starve.

Bestial Wrath with trinket proc macro nets me KC x 2, 6-7 Arcane before I need to fire cobra. That's about it. I'm seeing 30-33% in autoshot so I dunno if I'm ganking the rotation somewhere or if that's normal and I'm overspamming. Earlier I just stood and fired cobras to try and see what the hell was up on the percentages-still same. This is one area I've not explored given I've never did the group thing so I'm flying blind here.

Not worried about PvP given it's siutational and the damage output there is fine if that's what I'm focused on in the BG. Well judging by the damage crap n stats at the end of the BG anyhow.

Ok, lets go back to the hit rating question then. What target dummie are you testing on? Is it the level ?? elite one or the regular 85th level one? If it's the ?? elite one, check your recount for how much your missing. With your current hit rating your going to be missing on anything that is above level 85.

Regular 85 given I don't need the 8% HR for what I'm doing at this time. 0 misses.

I guess I'm wondering if I'm clipping auto's and if so, would that reduce overall DPS or is the rotation simply not tight enough that I'm missing cast shots, firing too many auto's therefore reducing overall DPS. Hell maybe I'm clipping cast shots. That was why I mentioned the auto % as it's by far the least damage. It's simply an area I don't know. It may be an unanswerable question given the char/pet build is PvP oriented as well. Might spec a 2nd with my old builds. Couple points in there that would be best placed elsewhere for this experiment. I've ran numbers on Female Dwarf and in theory I should be doing 2k more.  I think I'll do a 2nd spec  and work on the rotation, see how many cast shots I'm screwing up on in the rotation. As you know, it only takes a few missed to knock the dps backwards. I think that's where the problem is. If I do decide to do groups I'll want it higher. Probably as with most things, more reading n practice. If not, screw it, I'll stay PvP icon_smile

Auto Shots don't clip anymore, so you don't need to worry about missing any opportunities there.

Your priority sounds good.

Only advice I would have is not to link Fervor with Rapid Fire. It can be used with Rapid Fire + Bestial Wrath, but Fervor should always be used during Bestial Wrath. The idea is to fire nothing but Arcane and KC during big red. Without Fervor you'll probably be focus starved at around 6 secs in.

For your big burst cooldowns, I'd do it like this:

Bestial Wrath + Call of the Wild + Trinket + Rapid Fire + Fervor

Bestial Wrath

Bestial Wrath + Trinket + Fervor

Bestial Wrath

Bestial Wrath + Call of the Wild + Trinket + Rapid Fire + Fervor

Provided you have the BW glyph, you'll need to wait a couple of seconds for the fifth one, but all your cooldowns should be just about ready to line up by the 5th one.

Hope that makes sense, and hope it helps. icon_smile

Thanks for the input Gar. Couple of questions whenever you can find time and some clarification. I use Rapid+Fervor rarely if at all. Actually my useage of Rapid Fire is poor. The info you provided helps in it's useage.  Below is at this time the only Beastial Wrath 'go to' macro I have and use. Couple of things on it.

Should I add a /cast rapid fire line to it? You seem to suggest so.

Kill Command is in the macro. Given it's automatic for me to mash it whenever it's up I'm wondering if I'm inadevertantly ganking a KC by mashing it and having it macroed or is it a non issue?

I 'think' you addressed my question specifically for DPS in a raid environment yes? Given that's what I asked I assume soicon_smile You know me, old and dense.

Right now everything is PvP oriented so I rarely have time to pop off 5 BR's in an average BG but I use the macro below whenever it's up(provided the timing is right) which I 'think' covers all of your recommedations.

So essentially if I add rapid fire to the macro that should take care of all your suggestions? Anything that isn't off CD won't pop but everything else will when I hit the macro correct? Fervor I have keybound right beside this macro so I can and do pop it immediately. God, I'm growing concerned about my specifics. Course I told you PvP would do this to me, lol.

I find that using a "Wrath" macro is very helpfull...

#showtooltip

/cast Bestial Wrath

/use trinket (14)

/use Potion of the Tol'Vir

/use Potion of Speed

/castsequence Arcane Shot, Kill Command, Acane Shot, Arcane Shot

/petattack

Depending on your haste you may squeeze in another Arcane Shot.

I repeat this macro for Multi Shot too...

Have fun

Hello! First thing, thanks Garwulf - I love your site, and you've been a terrific help. Many thanks for all your efforts on our behalf; it's greatly appreciated icon_smile

Hi Agio icon_smile I've also found that a BW/Burst macro has been essential for both PvP and PvE, although mine differs somewhat. Here's what I use:

#showtooltip Bestial Wrath
/petattack
/use Potion of the Tol’vir
/use 13
/cast Bestial Wrath
/cast Call of the Wild
/cast Rabid
/cast Furious Howl
/cast Roar of Courage
/script UIErrorsFrame:Clear()

Slot 13 is my on-use trinket for both PvP/PvE, just to keep things simple, naturally. The various pet abilities cover each different pet I tend to favor, and won't interfere with each other, which means I don't need to worry about which pet I have out at any given time. The abilities on long cooldowns will trigger when ready. While adding Kill Command in there isn't a bad idea, the only issue is the possibility that it may not activate if your pet isn't on the target when you trigger the macro. To avoid this, I'd recommend using a pet attack macro (which Garwulf has so kindly provided) bound to a separate key, which will give the Tank time to grab the aggro while your pet runs in. I've found this to be very effective.

The one area where I differ from the above opinions is in the use of Rapid Fire during Bestial Wrath. This is because RF is strictly a haste booster, and haste does not affect our instant shots at all - it serves (for you, the Hunter) only to reduce the cast time of Cobra Shot, and increase the rate of your Auto Shots and Focus regeneration. Since Focus regen isn't a concern during this time, Rapid Fire will basically be wasted for the sake of a few extra Auto Shots. For the same reason, using Focus Fire during BW will also provide no real benefit, and in fact will rob your pet of the extra attack speed from the Frenzy stacks, something which Garwulf has already mentioned in another post. I like having Focus Fire on a separate keybind so I can choose whether to use it or not, although the new duration makes this less of an issue. Fervor is better to use to restore Focus since it's instant, and you'll want to use it for the last half of BW every time you can (which is every other time) - using Cobra will cost you almost two Arcane Shots due to the cast time, and also won't proc Cobra Strikes, essentially negating nearly 20% of your most powerful attack and doing substantially less damage in the process.

Using Rapid Fire after BW ends is when you will gain the most benefit from the increased Focus regeneration and Auto Shots, since more is always better, but also in this case because the Tol'vir potion will still be active for the entire duration, which will boost your Cobra and Auto Shot damage considerably, along with the occasional Arcanes and Kill Commands for balance. If you have your PvP on-use agility trinket equipped, that will still be active as well, and essentially turns this into a 20 second burst, with the ability to blast your target with a few more Arcane Shots immediately afterward (if you even need to).

When using a target dummy, the things that affect my overall dps the most are the absence of buffs from other players, and the fact that since a dummy never gets below 20% health, I never get to use Kill Shot, which crits hard and pretty often, especially when glyphed. Recount shows my damage to be around 20% or so lower in that situation, and my Auto Shot percentage is about the same as yours, which puts it consistently in the top three with Arcane Shot and Kill Command.

One other thing I've found to be a big help is to bind a separate macro with Rabid, Furious Howl, and whatever other pet abilities are on a 30 second CD to make sure they're up constantly - I've noticed they don't always trigger automatically, and when they do, there's usually a substantial delay - so while this may not be truly necessary, I like forcing them to activate so they'll be ready the next time I use the BW macro.

By the way, I really enjoy your posts, Agio - you have a great sense of humor icon_smile

Welcome to the joint Galandra.

Given I'm pretty much only PvP nowadays (it's a self-abuse phase I'm goiing through) I'm muddling along. If I ever do some raids n such all of this will come in handy.

Even though I've read the rapid fire/BW argument given what I'm doing, adding it to the macro is actually beneficial as I don't pop 4-5 BW's in an average BG.  I've ran through the 1st Burst BW w Rapid Fire Gar suggested. I'm getting 9-10 Arc S, 2 KC , 7 AS without using fervor. I do need to pop it after the rotation unless I can fire Cobra and continue along my merry way. DPS during BW still sucks, natch, this is me afterall.  No buffs it hovers around 22k but I'm okay with that using PvP gear. No clue what I'm actually doing in a BG w buffs. S'long as I can bring some pain to the party-in between running from Druids, I'm happy.

Darrwyn, I love you like the Goldfish I never had ( okay I did have several but I fed em to my cat) but I simply cannot bring myself to macro shots together. I'm afraid my puter would explode. Tha being said when you do your guide and it becomes a worldwide bestseller I am of course in for 15% of the gross. You're welcome.

Thanks for the input folks.
