Yes I know it's a strange thread title for an old hand hunter, but I never said I was a good hunter. Am I sure, well I hope not anyway. I may have said I had improved... don't think I ever said I was good. Okay, maybe I posted some screenshots where I topped the table in damage and kills in various battlegrounds, but that was reporting, not bragging! Anyhoo...
First off, I'm trying something new! Maybe not new for you guys, but new for me. I am trying to play by using my WASD keys, well primarily my W key for forward movement, A and D for strafing and I have my S set up as Disengage. I can walk backward if I want to, thats Shift-W.
So what have I been doing all this time? Well... my wife was playing WoW before I was. And when I came over, she told me to navigate completely with my mouse and use my left hand purely for attacking. Okay, I thought. (Before WoW I played Archlord using WASD and DDO using WASD so it really took me some effort to learn to only use my mouse to navigate. (both buttons to move forward and of course mouse turning, I have always had my A and D in strafe mode, not a keyboard turner. No way! Never that! (Well maybe a little while till I learned better... but that was way back.) It's safe to say, ALL my WoW experience has been using mouse both for navigation and manual target selection.
So now I've rolled a new hunter, and can't for one minute think why I never called him Darrwyn, go figure! Anyway, I am making a serious attempt to use my mouse purely for target selection and turning, and using my W key for forward movement.
I can't quite figure out my best set up for hot keys. Targrun is only a level 24 BM so I still have a lot of attacks, defences etc to cater for, but this is what I have been doing so far...
F1 Blood Fury (Yep an Orc)
F2 Growl/Cower toggle I hit this going in and coming out of an instance...
F3
F4
1 Pet Recall
2
3
4 Hunter's Mark - send in the pet
5 Concussive Shot
6
Q currently Steady Shot, has been Kill Command
E currently Arcane Spam (incorporating Hunter's Mark and Serpent Sting... yeah I know about castsequence macros...)
R currently Kill Command, has been Steady Shot
T Multi Shot (I always use T for AoE attacks in every class)
Y Intimidation (I always use Y for target specific attacks like Hex, polymorf etc Intimidation seems to fit that category)
F (unused at mo, usually used for speed or haste boosting spells/potions etc)
Z Mend Pet
X Health Pot/bandage
V Stance toggle (all classes with varying stances use this key... DK, Druid, Warrior etc)
Keys not mentioned are currently not used. I know I have Bestial Wrath, Widows Venom, Kill Shot etc to come
I find I am constantly changing where I have Steady Shot and Kill Command, and when I get Kill Shot things will get even more complicated.
I am using Tell Me When (TMW) to indicate when Focus drops below 35% and I have Comergy displaying Focus in a bar beneath my toon's feet.
I don't really have a need for a Serpent Sting or Hunter's Mark indicator as my spam macro is:
/petassist
/petattack
/castsequence reset=target Hunter's Mark, Serpent Sting, Arcane Shot (x 4)
/cast [@pettarget,exists] Kill Command; Mend Pet
/cast !Auto Shot
As indicated above, I don't simply let KC go off on it's own, I have a hot key for it but in the thick of battle and all the visual effects I can miss visual (and even audible) cues so at least here it has a chance of going off on it's own if there is sufficient focus. I don't find losing a GCD on a second HM matters as it rarely gets cast a second time on the same target anyway.
Apart from telling me to never use a castsequence macro... that is an argument you will always lose with me, as previously documented, what advice do you guys have for me?
Thanks in advance

I wish I could help you, Darrwynn, but I am one of the dreaded "clickers". I only ever use the WASD keys to move and I learned that way because I strafe mere than I probably should when playing a game. I don't know why. I just always have. Using Q and E to strafe and then clicking on my attacks is just easier for me. I know I will never be the "best" hunter because I lose those milliseconds clicking rather than pressing buttons, but it's more important to me to play in a way that affords me the most fun as opposed to playing the way that most people would expect I should.
Do your thing however it works best for you, D. Listen to others if you want, but don't make yourself a slave to what they say if it turns out to not be best FOR YOU. That's my advice.
The bottom line is that whether we're clickers or button mashers, we're hunters. Mobs die when we want them to either way.

Longer timer "clicker" here as well. I stick with it for pretty much the same reason.

Hi Lawman, Hi Tak, I'm surprised you are both clickers, but power to you if that's how you enjoy playing.
In my hunt for some wisdom, I used the search facility (it's there, believe me, top left of the forum page and just below your screen pic if you've logged in)... back now? See I said it was there... anyhow, I found an old post by Garwulf about how he plays, and guess what... no, He's not a clicker! Concentrate! He said in that post (I can only hope it's still the case...) That He only uses mouse for movement and I can't remember now, either A and D or Q and E for strafing. That's it. Nothing for forward, nothing for backpedaling...
So I figured, if that's how He does it...
So I am now configured to use mouse for all movement, A and D for strafing and all other keys for attack! I've mentioned before I'm not much of an defender, though I do see Disengage as an opportunity for attacking from range again, it's Feign Death I always forget about!
Anyhoo, off to the slaughter...
Cheers,
D
