OfflineJust looking for some general ideas on what you guys are doing against the following……..
Death Knight (Frost): If they don't out gear me by a lot I can whittle them down in life, but they always seem to win by spamming Howling Blast.
Warriors: Stuns galore and damage galore. I drop traps and attempt to kite them but they always seem immune or can get out of my stuff.
Mage (Frost): Freeze me in place then burn me down. It seems like if I trinket out of their freeze I get frozen again. If I do manage to trinket out and disengage away they port and freeze me again.
Mage (Fire): Stun me, blast me to hell and back. If I survive they stun me again. (well more like a blind actually).
Rogue: I've a long history of doing poorly against this class. If I do time it correctly and get out of their initial set up stun, I can never get away because of all the poisons on me. If I do manage to clear the poisons, my disengage drops me well within their teleport range.
NOTE: I'm just looking for what you guys are doing/using. I'm not looking for statements like “spec BM it tears things up in PvP”. BM is a great spec in PvP and would probably make these fights a bit easier on me. I have nothing against BM or SV. I'm a die hard MM player and like the more “sniper” type play style it has. Also, I have read stuff on WHU and Its A Trap. What I'm looking for is what people on here are doing/using.

OfflineSpec BM, IMO — things will start dying all around you.
I know that's not what you wanted to hear, but I speak the truth. ![]()
The screenshot below is from my BG daily this AM. Nothing terribly special about it, but this is typical of how many of my leaderboards look. As BM, I can always bring the lumber and the best part… I seldom die. Killing players + not dying = loads of fun! I can’t think of one class that poses an unfair advantage over me. But… I would say Locks, Warriors and Frost DKs are probably the biggest nuisances.
I do plan on giving MM a go, come 4.2. Once I have a chance to try it, I'll report back with my findings…

OfflineOk, something to point out here. When it comes to PvPing I can be a bit of a “doom and gloom” personality. I make things sound worse then what they really are for me. I dwell on the bad rather then the good.
I do ok at PvPing. I'm no expert at it, there is lots I could be doing better, but I progress. When I bump into the fights I mentioned above I tend to drag myself down because I got turned into a grease spot. I should just brush it off and move on because the next one I run into I may win. I don't do that however and the result is my all to common rants about stuff like this. My fellow guildies have pretty much taken up the attitude, “Ok, Tak is on another one of his rants. Just let him go on about it and eventually he will cool off.”
People may wonder why I keep PvPing if it causes me such stress. Well, I do actually enjoy it, despite the negative effect it has on me sometimes. Unless a match is severely lopsided in Alliance favor, I am usually in the top 10 or better in honor kills and such. I do better then what I let on, so dont let my rants fool you.

OfflineI know it's an old thread but still relevent IMO…
I found that as the quality of my PVP gear improved, so did my performance, and as a result, my enjoyment. I know it sounds condescending to say get better gear, but really it's amazing the difference a bit of resilience and some extra stamina found on PVP gear does for you. Primarily, it allows you to live longer, enabling you to try new things and to practice getting out of tight situations. As a dedicated Horde player, I find the Undead racial enables me to have dual dps trinkets and therefore I hit harder.
Also, there is a time and a place for each spec. IMO running as MM or SV is viable in a rated bg or a guild non-rated if everyone is sticking to a plan, but BM is definitely better for PUGs. IMO BM is also better for bgs involving chasing flag carriers, as the pet hits harder and you can use Bestial Wrath and Intimidation to hit harder still. On the other hand, BGs like Alterac Valley, Strand of the Ancients, Toll Barad or Gilneas can certainly be good hunting grounds for MM or SV hunters as long as you stay with a group, whether attacking or defending.
Cheers,
D

OfflineI currently have 3 hunters with each spec covered, for an article I’m writing (yeah still on about castsequence macros…). I have played MM the least, and therefore my lowest level character (26) is levelling in that spec. I am looking at learning the insides and outsides of MM as I level. I find I’m rarely using Aimed Shot… standing still for 3 seconds is bad for my health, but I’m looking forward to when it procs as a focus-free alternative… KAPOW!
My next highest (71) switched from BM to SV at 70 (for the article) and I really find SV a great PvP spec. I love setting up my target to walk onto an ice or freeze trap and pounding them with Lock & Load. Not many survive that third Explosive Shot!
My 85 (and the original Darrwyn) is BM spec and loving it. He usually runs with his Chimera in flag events or one of 3 SBs or Core Hound. I must try to convince him a silithid is worth trying too… I’ve always liked the Cunning pets for their versatility.
Cheers

I did notice that a substantial amount of the “problem classes” gripes I've seen Hunters make on the official Blizzard forums is due to the class glitches we're currently having, such as pet bars randomly disappearing and MC/Deterrence not working 100% of the time–very deadly when it comes to CC'ers and DoT-lovers like DKs, Rogues and SPriests, not counting the nerfs Blizzard keeps making to certain key abilities (like The Beast Within–it wasn't exactly an “I Win” button to begin with, but they just had to reduce its snare/root/stun immunity effect to that of a trinket–and Explosive Shot, which one person on the official forums recently noted as “hitting like a wet noodle on resilience”).
I'm not a fan of the whole “remove deadzone” argument going on, especially now that deadzone is simply melee range, but I keep noticing the above come up, and I believe that perhaps half of it or more–especially the glitches–is legitimate. One blogger whom I constantly follow pins this on the recent game development issue of “multiplayer game balance”.
If a Tauren Hunter and a Tauren Druid marry and have children, you will end up with BraveStarr and Thirty-Thirty.

A lot of the “remove deadzone” argument comes from fighting classes such as Frost Mages, who get in on Hunters and can easily stay within the melee zone. While they are still able to do their top damage, Hunters are limited to our very weak melee. We can counter this with our abilities to get away, but get in trouble if everything is on cool down. (This is why having Beast Within nerfed hurt so much. If something got in your melee range and tried trapping you their, you could use Bestial Wrath to become immune.)
My opinion is to not remove the “dead zone”, but improve our abilities to get out of melee range. One of those options being to restore BW to its full immunity status. This is just one idea and I've been trying to come up with more. Again, just my opinion.

OfflineRe Dead Zone…
I think that any archer/crossbowman/rifleman would have a hard time loosing more than one shot once an enemy was within melee range. Even Legolas used his sword and dagger at close quarters! I don't think removing our dead zone is the answer, but perhaps casters (who are also range fighters) should have the same restriction. Could Gandalf (or even Thrall) concentrate on his spell while his gut was being sliced open? I think all melee actions should interupt a spell cast…
When you think about it, we have up to 4 ways of gaining range…Disengage, two Trinkets (ok we can carry two… it is a choice we make not to…) and BMs have BW and all are subject to cooldowns. Perhaps adding a mechanic where if our pet engages our assailant whatever hold they have on us (perhaps except ice) dissipates would do the trick. (Charge has a stun!) I ask you, what assailant could maintain casting or stabbing (a hunter) while a lion was ripping open their back?
Cheers

@Tak: Indeed, I wish they would bring that old BW mechanic back, but as it stands, it now needs to be combined with Master’s Call to be really effective.
@Darrwyn: Good idea. Perhaps not dissipate entirely; whatever roots or stuns they may have will have their duration lessened. Then again, that’s essentially another form of Master’s Call. I really believe Blizzard should focus on addressing the current MC glitch, but the ominous truth (?) appears to be that Blizzard has yet to address any Hunter-related playerbase questions for Cataclysm, as far as I can tell (and from info gleaned from the official forums).
Anyway, back on topic:
I share some problem classes with Takaas actually–they change depending on what spec I’m in (plate wearers for BM, casters and Rogues for SV)–but I find the issue more to be one of proper control in combat. As long as you can hinder your opponent’s mobility and frustrate them by staying out of reach and out of sight, you can win. Since I only ran MM PvP a few times, I wouldn’t consider myself to be any sort of authority especially on that particular subject, but maybe I can give some general pointers from how I've seen other people play:
1) Deterrence and Master’s Call are your best friend when fighting Mages, Elem Shamans, Rogues and Death Knights. MC to get out of their stuns/roots and gain distance, Deterrence to ward off excess damage while you’re doing so. One tactic against DKs is to actually force them to Death Grip you, then Wing Clip, MC, Disengage and burst. Deterrence with Mirrored Blades can help you score faster kills against casters too.
2) Readiness is your best friend for making sure the above abilities are always on call.
3) Roar of Sacrifice and Intervene on a Tenacity pet can help mitigate damage, especially for DoT’ers like Locks. Some players like Brang and Gar advocate binding key pet abilities instead of having everything on autocast, so you can pop them whenever needed. In fact proper pet control can save your life when fighting a Rogue.
4) Warriors may have talents to help them escape roots and snares, but not if you can Chain Trap him. Ironically, one way of doing this is LoS so you can bait him into a trap. Two Dara Mctire MM Hunters actually pulled this off on Swifty and defeated him.
5) Rogues and casters *hate* snakes. If you can bait them into walking on a Snake Trap, do so. Rogues fall for this when they try to stunlock; pop your trinket at the right time, MC and Deterrence, then lay a Snake Trap before you Wing Clip+Disengage. Note that good Rogues and casters will often try to AOE the snakes, so you might want to land a Stun on that guy before you Snake Trap him, and not just a root…
I find as long as I have a chance of outlasting the other player, I can stand a chance of winning even against more experienced and/or better geared players–so assuming I have some sense in me on a given day to play smart, I will go on the defensive and backstab my opponent whenever I can instead of going Rambo on them.

All very nice information.
Just some additional information from the official forums.
One of the regular posters recorded a couple of videos of his duels against a Rogue and a Warrior. Very good information and rather handy. After I watched this I was able to take on a Feral and a Rogue one after the other in a BG.
The first video sort of solidifies, in my mind, the supposed rivalry between the Rogue and the Hunter: it was more a battle of cooldown management than it was burst DPS. Which IMO Blizzard should be focusing on if they're having trouble pinpointing the Hunter's exact role in the game (which many people feel they are).
If a Tauren Hunter and a Tauren Druid marry and have children, you will end up with BraveStarr and Thirty-Thirty.
