This is a general question spawned from a slow Friday here in the office: Is it ever too late to start frequenting the BGs?
I've got a middle-aged (lvl 45?) Orc BM Hunter who may need some direction in his life. I think he's bored with questing, though he is a Worldly Orc and does enjoy seeing the sights, killing new things, the Hunt in general, etc. He's really grown disgruntled with the menial tasks he's being set on nearly every day, and I'm thinking he may appreciate the opportunity to more directly effect the War efforts.
I've got a lvl 85 mindest when it comes to gear and stats- cap Hit @ 8%, easy. Min/max gear, easy.
How does an Orc not yet in his prime break into BGs? Where does he get Resilience gear?
These are questions about things I'm frankly too lazy to look up. I've never really been a PvPer and I know many of you are, so I put it to you.

Resilience doesn't play a part in the lower levels. It's only found on PvP heirloom gear and scales crappily compared to DPS gear in the 19-69 range.
My advice for maximum fun is to run a few randoms – even turning off exp if you want – and grab some nice pieces. Once you're around the median level for the bracket (44-46, in your case) queue some BGs and weck some faces.
I queued an EotS the other day at level 54 and just murdered everyone. Most players you'll encounter are leveling an alt and are mainly just BG'ing for the exp on the way to 85 — they're not really concerned with becoming great with their classes yet. In my experience, by the time I hit the last two or three levels of the bracket, it's an absolute bloodletting… a fun bloodletting. 
The one stat you need to load up on is hit rating. Try to have at least 5% hit – more if you're planning on going into BGs in the mid-level range for the bracket.
And by the way, I run as a BM Orc w/ a wolf.

I'd also like to add that Stamina is a much bigger deal in lower bracket BGs than Resilience. You'll want more HP to survive the opposing team and give a little something back in kind. By the time you hit 60 you can get General's/High Warlord's gear, which is loaded with Stamina, and at level 70 you get access to Brutal and Guardian pieces from Legacy Honor Vendors. But before 60, you can buy PvP pieces from the Defilers in Arathi Highlands and the Warsong Outriders in Northern Barrens for dirt cheap (only up to a hundred plus Honor per piece).
It's only at the level 75-79 bracket that things get hairy. Unless you're rich and can afford Cataclysm gear for your level 77-79 toon, BGs in this bracket can be lopsided. Extremely lopsided at times.
If a Tauren Hunter and a Tauren Druid marry and have children, you will end up with BraveStarr and Thirty-Thirty.

As Gryzor mentioned, the WSG and AB gear is great up until the mid-50’s, but after that you’re going to want to find yourself some Outland gear.
The epic WSG bracers are outstanding – even though they have int on them – and can be bought for really cheap.
But yea… if you want to relish a few levels of BG’ing before moving to the next bracket, turn off exp while you’re amassing your ‘work clothes’. Once you’re geared up, turn the exp back on and level through BGs – then thinking, “man this is fun… how come I never thought to do this before..?!”.
I love the lower level brackets, but unfortunately the exp-off BG queues take forever to pop. Otherwise, I’d just stay a twink.

I forgot to clarify that the Defilers sell armor pieces, while the Outriders sell off-pieces and weapons. These have level requirements ending in 8 (18, 28, 38, 48, etc) so you will want to keep your current level in mind when buying from them. At level 60 you finally gain access to full sets.
The Warsong Outrider vendor is Kelm Hargunth, while the Defilers vendor is Rutherford Twing.
Garwulf: Interesting, so XP-off BGs do have a different queue from regular BGs? I witnessed this little argument in AV earlier where a guy said he didn't want to turn his XP off for twink BGs because it took him an hour and half to queue for them, and another player laughed him off. I was confused about the whole thing.

Yep. Exp-off BGs are essentially twink-only, so depending upon the bracket and time of day, the queues can take forever. They seemed to pop pretty quickly back when regional BGs went live, but they’re back to taking a looooong time again.
When I log on I want to get right to it and ‘play’, so I finally got fed up and decided to level — spending the last five levels or so of each bracket gaining exp through BGs. It’s sorta like twinking, if only for a short time.
Blizz made the BGs separate to try and keep things balanced. Too many players complained about how twinks were ruining the whole BG experience for them, so Blizz chose to just make it twink vs twink, which is fine… it’s just the player base to draw from is much smaller so it takes forever to get games.

(1)Go to the “Hall of the Brave” in Orgrimmar and talk to “Slahtz” to turn on/off xp.
(2) Twinks are below level cap player characters who have gained the best powerful gear for their level with enhancements such as expensive weapon enchants, leg patches and BoE/BoP greens, blues or epics. Twinks are mainly used in pvp fighting and battlegrounds. Twinks obtain their items through rare drops, drops off of bosses in instances, rewards from quests that are difficult to complete at their level, and from the auction house. Twink items on the auction house can be expensive and twink enchantments can only be performed by high-level characters. Therefore, twinking usually requires significant assistance from high-level alts, friends, and/or guild members. However, there are examples of self-made twinks that generate the necessary gold from auction house trading or other in-game methods.

If you’re Alliance, you can talk to Behsten in the War Room of Stormwind Keep instead to turn off your XP gain. Slahtz is his Horde counterpart.
A funny side note is that if you put their names together, “Behsten Slahtz” sounds like “Best in Slots”. =P
