I was inspired by Gar's post about taming Terrorpene and he was DEFINITELY one of the pets I wanted most out of Cata. After reading Gar's post, though, I didn't want to wait. My hunter dinged 81 in Vash'Jir and made a stop in SW before making a beeline for the Hyjall lava pit. (As I am old enough to not know how to include a screenshot, I will list all the relevant stats. I did take screenshots (including one that is soooo sweet I'm using it as my desktop wallpaper now) so if anyone doubts the account, I will provide the screens to whoever can post them for me. =P)
The reason I stopped of in SW was to gear up/re-gem/reforge with the sole purpose of taming Terrorpene. The goal was to give me as much stam/haste and resistance (in that order) as I could get. I combined pvp gear with my regular gear choosing pieces with the highest stam. Unless a socket bonus provided haste, I re-gemmed with solid majestic zircons. One brainstorm I had here was to swap a Shielded Skyflare Diamond into my metagem socket. Not only did it give me the sweet +32 stam, but it gave me the 2% reduced spell damage. Based on the way the tame shook out compared to others that I've read about, I can only assume this helped a TON! After re-gemming, it was off to reforge every stat I could in its maximum amount into haste. This must have helped a ton, too, as I'll explain later.
My total HP when buffed was 45,711. My haste was 20.72% and my fire resistance was 157. I had the following buffs: Prismatic Elixir (+90 magical resistance), Basilisk Liver Dog (+90 haste/+90 stam), Drums of the Ancient Kings (+4% stam/+52 magical resistance), Potion of Speed (+500 haste) and Ancient Hysteria (+30% casting speed).
I was at the southern end of the little lava channel east of Sulfuron Spire and he spawned right underneath me. I flew ahead to the small island just north east of the magma giant that sits on the west bank. I was sweating bullets because the place had been CRAWLING with hunters all day. I landed, summoned my core hound for AH, dismissed him, hit the taming macro that Gar suggested (the one that uses the speed pot, pops Deterrence and starts the tame) and held my breath. I was TOTALLY BLOWN AWAY by the result. I had so much haste that the tame finished before Terrorpene finished his lava beam attack and I ENDED THE TAME WITH 28,033 HP!!!
I was shaking and just sitting in my chair stunned by how fast it went down. About 4 hunters had flown in either during or just after the tame. They all congratulated me (the orc bowed to me and knealt to my new pet) and one of the 85s told me he thought it was his lucky day when he saw I was 81 and though for sure I was gonna get smoked.
Thank you Gar for the inspiration!
Thank you fellow Lodge-heads for the support and shared tales of triumph!
Btw…my 8 year old daughters came running in to see him (since I always have them come and see my new beasties) and when I asked them what I should name him, they huddled together a moment and then said “Name him Spike, daddy!”
“Spike? Isn't that kinda plain?”
“Daddy look at him….he's a FLAIMING TURTLE!! If HE doesn't look like a 'Spike' we don't know what does.” =P
Ahhh the wisdom of youth. He sure as hell DOES look like a 'Spike'. Spike it is!

lawman… awesome job. I didn't even know that Basilisk Liver Dog exists, and I'm a chef (well, in-game anyway).
Btw, I looked it up, there is a Spike! I should rename mine to SpikeBlop so my Yoshí won't feel too lonely.
Congratulations on getting him at lvl 81! He's one tough turtle!
I've just tamed him (on Terokkar at around 4am) in the most bumbling tame ever, lol. I'm lvl 83 (with rubbish gear!), and every time I've been to look for him there's been lots of lvl 85s waiting also. Not wishing to die a humiliating death and watch someone else walk of with him while I crawl back to my corpse, I've not really camped him like I did the spirit beasts.
But by an amazing stroke of luck, I hung around for about ten minutes tonight – mostly because no one else was there lol, and he spawned right in front of me! So I'm there, hitting scrolls, gulping potions … and hammering furiously on the tame button, shouting “wth aren't you working” at the screen. Um yeah, that would be because your core hound is still standing next to you o_O So I dismiss him, but by this time the potion has worn of, but I hit the tame button anyway. And promptly die. That turtle is mean.
Now I'm panicking, thinking someone else will get him now… But, luckily for me no one else came. I had an old bit of dragonfin, and one last potion. So I necked them both and took my chance. It was close – way too close for comfort!
But he's mine I'm so happy!
