Gratz on the title Anj! Dont know if anyone else was a fan, but I also liked Beastmaster the series which ran from 1999 to 2002. The last season even had Mark Singer in it.

I'm in search of a new cunning pet now - I've watched a few videos trying to improve my DPS and that seems to be the pet of choice. Thinking about a wind serpent.

What exactly seems to be the pet of choice? I'm curious. I just tamed a cat because I was unhappy with my dog. How very plain of me I know, lol
It used to depend on what you were doing at the time. Some bosses I would pull out my wolf, others cat and I have been asked to use my bat on occasion. Before Cata I was only using my Bat in PvP.
Since Cata I have only used Cats. I put my fox away because he refuses to behave and the tailspin annoys me.
What you prefer to use will also depend on your spec I believe. I only run Survival so spirit beasts are out for me. Seek out The Beast Master on the Hunter Pet thread. 🙂
I think it's gonna depend a lot on the group composition and whether you find yourself running with the same folks a lot, where you will know what buffs will be avail. or mostly in PuGs when it's literally Luck of the Draw. All the pets from any given group (Tenacity, Cunning, Ferocity) will give you the same DPS, and the Ferocity (I think) will still give you slightly higher DPS than the others, with Cunning a close second. What pet you bring may then come down to what buff it gives that would most benefit the group.
My wolf is still my sort of "go to" pet for groups, and I always have a cat with me too. After that I will y and keep a variety:
-ravager (4% phys dmg buff)
-fox sometimes for the attack speed debuff
-hyena (bleed dmg boost, if I know there's a warrior or rogue DPS with us)
It just depends. I'm almost exclusively SV these days but my off is BM. I used to bring my Core Hound for the Ancient Hysteria buff, but nowadays my groups always have either a Mage or a Shaman or both, so I don't *need* that. I keep BM on the side so I can tame cool exotics though, I'm a pet junkie at heart 🙂 I don't have a clue for PvP 'cause I really don't do it, other than to guess Cunning, since that's what I've read.
