Firstly I'd like to explain why I'm a huntard (since most people just assume it's because you're an idiot). Basically, I started playing wow almost thee years ago, but since I was at Univeristy I never had time to play, nor the money to pay for it. If I was lucky I played once a month, if I was short on cash or had a major project to do I played maybe three times in six months. Regarding this information, it's easy to see why I'm such a noob when it comes to the basics. I have fairly little experience, especially in dungeons, because before now I've only ever had time to play solo. To be honest it's startng to get really frustrating. I started playing this game for fun, but it seems as soon as you hit 60 people are constantly telling you how crap you are, if you're not totally perfect. I'm not the kind of person who would usually take things like this seriously, because I'd rather be having a good time then worrying if my hit rating is low or if I die too often. Like, who cares? It's a game! But it's gotten to the point where I can't do anything involving other players without somone being on my back. Besides, I don't want to ruin other people's gameplay with my rubbish DPS.
So, the data. I'm on a PvE server, I'm a level 71 Hunter, Belf. I'm a beast mastery/marksmanhip build. My stats are:
strength-96
agility-383
stamina-419
intellect-108
spirit-82
armor-4813
ranged damage-608-761
speed-2.10
power-1332
hit rating-21
crit chance-14.75%

I've done a load of research, searched forums and guides for help, and if i'm not being called a noob I'm getting confused with the constant bickering and contradictions. Some say attack power, some say agility, some say survivor some say beast mastery. *sigh*
So, some questions.
1) Build. Is my build appropriate? Some say BM is best for PvE servers, some say switch to survivor when you hit 60, some say survivior full stop. I'v gotten to the point where I'd like to do dungeons more then quests, so what's best realistically? I was thinking of rolling MM.
2) Shot rotations. I've read that to cause most damage I should change my shot rotation to auto/steady/auto/steady/kill command/steady/auto. How accurate is that?
3) Gear. I do dungeons to try and find better gear but either I dont get what I need or I get booted because my party says I suck and I'm not doing enough damage.I've asked to be in a 25 player raid, and got told my gear score was too low. Auction House items are pretty rubbish and I find that 99% of quest rewards are a downgrade for me. What now?
Also, if anyone can direct me to webpages that show a decent build/hunter gear set/decent stats, that might help. Thanks.
There are some excellent guides on this very site.
Beastmaster: https://huntsmanslodge.com/the-.....st-mastery
Marksmanship: https://huntsmanslodge.com/the-.....rksmanship
Survival: https://huntsmanslodge.com/the-.....r-survival
Read through these and follow them. They will help you a lot. Also, here is a site I use often to find gear upgrades:

As for being called a "Huntard", it pretty much comes with the territory. Unfortunately its a stereotype we are stuck with, even a Hunter with my experience has people call him a "Huntard" from time to time, even if I don't deserve it. The philosophy I have taken up is to let my actions speak for me. Let the name calling go in one ear and out the other. Make effort to improve yourself and you will find things will get better. Coming here and asking for help is definately a step in the right direction.
Hey takaas what server you on?
Argent Dawn (US)
Saffronire,
My first and foremost suggestion to you, as a 5+ year hunter veteran, is to just quest and enjoy the landscape until you hit 80. Northrend is a very pretty continent and I wouldn't stay cooped up in an instance the whole time.
What you should do though is focus mostly on the mail and leather pieces with agility and stamina. You don't need to worry about int too much while leveling. As survival, you're going to be crit heavy with talents, so try and get pieces that have attack power versus crit when you have to make that decision while leveling.
Once you get 80 then start worrying about gear, talents, rotations, and all the math
involved.
Drack
Saffron,
First off, if you're struggling a bit right now, I'd suggest just sticking with questing while you're learning the ropes. As Drack mentioned, don't concern yourself with upgrades too much at this point. The main thing is to learn the mechanics of the class, and most importantly, just enjoying the leveling experience and game play as a hunter. If you're getting kicked from groups instead of receiving constructive criticism, then I recommend avoiding instances until you get a better handle on things. Unfortunately, WoW is rife with idiots who would rather kick you and berate you, than offer a helping hand and some bits of advice.
But… fortunately for you, I'm not one of them. 🙂
Here's what I suggest…
If you like Beast Mastery, then by all means continue with it. It's the best leveling spec and will also prove more than adequate should you decide to venture into the occasional dungeon.
At 72, I'd be using a build that looked like this: http://www.wowhead.com/talent#.....0eco:ibZzM
This build will provide you with a lot more DPS, by accentuating the strengths of Beast Mastery a bit more. Be mindful of my glyph suggestions as well.
At your level, you'll get the most bang by using a wolf – for instances that is.
Here's a good build for a 72 wolf: http://www.wowhead.com/petcalc.....d00szz0hoo
Make sure to macro certain abilities together in order to get full benefit, such as this one:
/cast [pettarget,exists] Kill Command
/cast Bestial Wrath
/cast Call of the Wild
/cast Rabid
/cast Rapid Fire
For more info on macros, please visit this page: https://huntsmanslodge.com/macros
As Takaas mentioned, I do have some guides on here that will help you learn some of the fundamentals of the various builds. These can be helpful reference tools as you level up, plus they may also help you to determine which spec(s) you may want to settle into at 80.
Lastly, one bit of gear advice… I have a feeling that your Scryer's Trinket may be the cause of some of your group problems. It's not a trinket for hunters, as we don't benefit from Spell power. I suggest replacing it with this one:
http://www.wowhead.com/item=38212
It's very easy to get at level 72 and will prove a lot more useful.
I hope some of this info helps. Don't hesitate to come back if you have any further questions. 😀
There is also something very important: You don't get to do WotLK raids until you are lvl 80! I assume if you tried to get into a raid and someone told you your gear score was low, it was a lvl 80 raid and the person didn't even look at your level, just your gearscore.
As others said, don't worry about maximizing your dps through gear, spec or shot rotation until you are 80. Just do your quests and instances, sometimes you may find a player to politely tell you what you are doing wrong.
Some instance tips:
1) Pet management is VERY important in instances. There is nothing more annoying than a hunter pet pulling unwanted mobs, pay close attention to what your pet is doing.
2) Always focus your firepower on the current tank's target so you don't pull aggro from the wrong mob.
3) Turn your pet's Growl off (right click on it)
4) If people are bickering at you because of dps before lvl 80, they are idiots. Nevertheless, try to follow the guides linked by the people above and you should do better.
How much dps are you doing anyway? Are they really complaining just about low dps or are you doing something else wrong? I've seen low dps in sub-80 dungeons without complaints from the other players... Maybe my battlegroup is more forgiving, i.e., sensible?
All of the above stuff is pretty sound. My straight out advice, no matter what you do, you will run into idiots that run their mouth. If they are yelling about your dps but not giving legit advice, ignore them. If they kick you, you didn't want to run with them anyways. I've actually dropped from groups because people got on my case about something stupid. Keep looking at improving yourself like you are doing and enjoy the game. Things will fall into place.
Hi everybody. Newest signup, and one of the newest faces in WOW. My main is only a 32 so I'm still a true noob. Up until my last dungeon I've NEVER ran into any haters, of any kind. We all played, talked, smiled, etc... good times.
Then the other night, I get called a huntard for the very first time! Since I'm running a dps tracker I start thinking "wtf is their problem? Do they think I'm slacking?" so I post the dps stats on the 4 fighters to chat. Told em quit complaining, I'm doin 38% over here. Keep up squishy 🙂
Man did THAT piss people off! chat boxes were goin too fast to keep up! "o wait until 80, bs bs, blah blah"
After we killed a wave people started saying boot me, and the dm did.
I figure if I'm beating you now, I'll still be beating you at 80 cuz I LEVEL UP TOO.
Whew... anyway I do have a question! Should I be avoiding quests since my pet doesn't get xp? I read that early on, and stuck to dungeons and travel/gathering ever since. I don't want to distance my xp from my pet. Is it THAT much of a problem?

Your pet should level up along with you, even while questing. If you just tamed something that is lower level it will catch up to you rather quickly in levels. Running instances will catch them up to your level even faster. At 80, when I tame a lower level pet it automatically levels to level 76. Then I just take it on 3-4 instance runs and it will catch up to my level.
Awesome. Thanks!
To the people who say that they are getting belittled by others in the game I say this:
"SCREW THOSE TURKEYS!!!!"
Others will say this to you because they see that you are a leveling hunter and that, once you hit 80 and gear up, you will be better than them and they fear you for this. Their belittlement of you is their shallow attempt to get you to make the same mistake they did....rolling an inferior class. DO NOT GIVE IN!!!
If people are being jerks to you in dungeons, level through quests. I leveled both my hunters with quests and I had a blast! Questing is the least stressful way to level in the game. You can walk away whenever you need to (to get a drink, take care of your kids, etc.) and no one complains. No one will judge you as you quest, either (unless you actually hear your pet communicating with you telepathically in which case you REALLY need a time out from the game...FAST). The bottom line is HAVE FUN now and SMASH THEIR FACE IN later!
Gar and the people who come to this site will give you spot on, sound advice when it comes to questions you have as you level. Always remember this, though, because the gear curve is where it is right now because we are so late in the expansion, there will ALWAYS be people who complain about you being undergeared. Don't listen to them. If they kick you, get in another group. If they don't finish the run and then wash your hands of them. Believe me, I have been where you are and there are enough people who play this game who are still willing to help you along.
Don't forget....HAVE FUN!!! (and BM4LIFE!!!) =P
Here is an example of even the "veterans" such as myself getting grief.
I was in Warsong Gulch. I was trailing behind the main group and a Rogue jumped me. I was fending him off, but he outgeared me by a lot. I was low on health when a boomking showed up and offed the Rogue. Just as the Rogue died, his poisons finished me off. The boomking laughed at me and typed, "Yay! The biggest abortion class bites the dust!"
That is pathetic, Tak. I'm all GRRRRRRRRRR over that. lol
I ask "Oh, do you have a level 80 hunter? Ah, I see." then "/me smiles knowingly" and say nothing. It really pisses off the griefers, for some reason since their answer is always no. (Also works that way when a childless individual offers parenting advice to me, but that's another forum. lol)
The only time i've been put down past that is by my own guild mates, from their alliance toons. They LOVE to try and kill me. It is fun, and makes for a great WG.
