could someone clue me in here as to how this works and how i'm suposed to use it correctly? im getting conflicting info.

What exactly are you wanting? Do you need a macro to assist the tank specifically, or just what it means? Give us a little more to go on, and we'll be able to help you 🙂
Assist the tank simply means to attack whatever the tank is attacking. So if, for example, there are 5 mobs, attack whatever the tank is targeting -- when that mob dies and he moves onto the next target, attack his new target. Instead of just dpsing a random mob, you will always be attacking the mob the tank is on at that time.
And this depends on the raid you are in, for example, in our raids, I'm the assist target, not the main tank, so everyone targets whatever I'm targeting, etc. This is often used when we have multiple tanks, and it keeps damage focused on one mob at a time, rather than split because different people are attacking different things.
People often make this sound more complicated than it is. A raid leader will say, assist X, and you simply attack whatever X is attacking at all times. Nothing more. To simplify this, you can make a /assist <name> macro (without the <>'s).
If you enable target of target too.. you can just focus you tank then see what hes targeting that way too. Plenty of options on how you can manage that. But simply it mean hit what the tank it targeting =D
I set the tank as my focus, then use this macro for targeting:
/assist Focus
It ensures that I'm always shooting what the tank is hitting.
