In lower levels, prior to the 4.0.1 patch, I was generally second in the DPS Recount list. The top notch was usually filled by a mage, or at least somebody a level or 2 ahead of me, which didn't concern me in the slightest. However, since the patch and now a level 60, I seem to have staked a claim at #4 spot on the list. This is my first hunter character, and I do consider him a training toon, meaning I'm trying to learn the class. As such, this site has been my mentor, trainer and advisor…. thank you to all contributors.

About my play:
I am a relatively older gamer (50), so I don't expect to have the twitch reactions of a 15yo, so I try to macro as much as I can…
Trash:
1. Hunter's Mark, send in the pet (I use both a cat and a wolf), have Kill Command in the macro… /cast [pettarget, exists] Kill Command (from the Macro's guide) and cast !Auto Shot.
2. Serpent Sting, including a Focus Fire, Kill Command and petattack commands along with !Auto shot
3. Arcane shot, which includes Kill command and !Auto Shot
4. Steady Shot once focus goes below about 40% (to keep something in the tank for KC or BW
5. If the BW icon (I use the power auras from Training Wheels) lights up I hit BW if the pet is in action or I might wait if clearing boss' guards
I have been throwing in multi-shot when I have a group of mobs. I've read that 2 steady shots is better than 1 steady, 1 multi for the 2 GCDs, but other hunters seem to use MS so really just joining in.
Boss, same as trash but I hit Fervor to renew the focus when I need to.
I've only been in Outland for a little while, and have only run TBC instances twice so far, so my TBC gear is still being accumulated. I have noticed my Recount is now in the 300's rather than the 200's, but other toons at same level are in the 500's. I know gear will account for some of my DPS, but I want to make sure I am doing what I can with what I have (including my old fingers, lol) to make my contribution worthwhile to any party.
Any help or suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Silencing Shot no longer does damage as of patch 4.0.1

Yeah I understand that, it's silencing it's there for. From what I've read it still does that.
In either PvP or PvE you'll prefer to have that on a separate keybind, it's not a DPS increase so it takes up space in macros and makes them read an extra line(which does slow them down), as well as the fact that it makes it a little harder to specifically time your silencing shots for maximum effect.
WB Indomitus, been awhile since I have seen ya on the boards!
Darrwyn you definitely are heading in the right direction. But few things, from your post you have listed things from the MM tree and the BM tree. At a outland level I do not believe it's possible to have Bestial Wrath and Silencing shot anymore with the new tree system. So From looking at the Armory I know you are BM, so you don't have Silencing shot anyways. As they said take it out or all your macros, the game would take time to find it and you don't have it.
Other then that I'm not much up on BM at all, in fact I feel useless when it comes to it. But I know Gar and Takaas could prob help better.
The only other thing, KC might work differently for BM hunters then MM but I don't believe KC get's qued every time in a macro anymore, so I don't think you are best utilizing that in a macro and might need to que that spell on it's own.
The Two Steady Shot rotation you have been reading about is for MM also, it's a proc that is down that tree. So if you don't get two SS off you don't miss anything from it =D
For AOE the best thing you can do right now is to Trap launch a Explosive trap- Muti Shot till focus is gone- SS till you get Enough Focus for Multi- hit Multi again. Most trash packs will be dead by then, if there are a few stragglers throw a Arcane shot at them =D
I do think that's a good start for you, but again all I can do it help out with the thing that are similar to MM, one of the amazing BM hunter's will have to step in from here to help out. Happy huntings!

this is my new best friend...
Indo, I cecond Celika's centiment (hahaha couldn't help myself there) and say it's good to see you. You have a great way of wording things.
Thanks for the warm words of welcome 🙂
Also, I'm not sure if I should take that as a compliment or an insult... The part about my way of wording things that is.
Definitely a compliment hun. You never sound condescending when offering advice, even though you are an end-game raider and have a very precise way of looking at things. It is rare to find someone with both superior skills and a willingness to help others; the two are for the most part in my experience, mutually exclusive. (for instance, if I had offered advice in certain situations, it might be tossed in with a bit of snark and a wink and a grin.)
Thanks for all the replies.
I have removed Kill Shot from all the macros apart from the first one, which is the Hunter's mark, send in the pet...
I made a macro I call PROX:
/cast Kill Command
/cast Focus Fire
/cast !Auto Shot
and I tap it whenever a proc graphic appears. Seems to work fine. Sometimes it took 2 or 3 key presses to get KC off, but now it's instant. I think this little macro alone improved my DPS immediately. I noticed my average DPS went form around 240 to 315 as soon as I did this. Now its usually around 425 or so, but i think its more the level raise than a breakthrough in my play. I picked up a better bow yesterday which I am eager to try out.
While here I will ask about weapon choice:
When I originally posted, I was using a crossbow with damage 124-125 and can't remember the stats, if any, on it. I used it instead of my bow which had damage 80-144 and Agility +9. My new bow offers damage 125-244 but no stats...
Am I better off with the new bow with high damage no stats, or with old bow, some stats and lower damage?
About Multi-Shot...
Advice given seems contrary to what I've read about Multi-Shot. Can't remember where I read it, but it was very critical of it as it tends to disrupt agro for the tank, and does only half the damage (albeit to more targets) than Arcane or Steady.
I have been using explosive or immolation trap via the launcher, but it seems the time taken to launch it, wastes DPS if nothing steps on it, and then it's only once. I can ususally get 3 arcanes or 2 steadys off in the same time it takes to launch and deploy a trap, Or do you guys run into the thick of battle, bend over and position your traps? And often the damn tank just runs over it instead of drawing the mob to it, also.
With trap launcher, you want to have it prepared before the fight actually starts, so know the pulls and use it liberally, even with the time it takes for it to fly through the air and arm itself, it's a hell of a lot better than running up and dropping a trap.
Multi-Shot is strictly AoE now, wait till the tank has established a decent threat lead or use it with Misdirection to help get him the initial agro to hold them and just use it until there's 2-3 mobs left, at which point, just single target them down.
Unless things have significantly changed since I last really played, higher weapon DPS > a slight amount of stats.
@Niika, thank ya. I wrote a guide on the official forums before I got banned(Actually, in the end the guide wound up being one of the reasons I got banned, I got pissed that people were constantly asking the same questions that were covered in it, durrrr >.<), and before and after that, I always offered advice, provided the person asking for advice actually wanted to learn, as for the way I answer... The precision is partly for the fact that I tend to learn it till I can do it in my sleep, which helps a ton when progression raiding(HELLLLOOOO late nights and early mornings >.<).
I toss a trap in while the tank is running in. Then again, I know where my tanks will go, and am a spoiled hunter so my traps tend to hit rather than sitting there. If I am asked to run in and drop trap (did that on Saurfang), then I just disengage back out, and my shots are already firing upon landing.
does that help?

Sorta… I didn't do a lot of the TBC dungeons with my first 2 toons to that level, so I'm not familiar with the instances. Earlier on I tried lobbing the trap into the tank's fight and they went off, but once again, time taken I could get off 3 arcanes…
WOW!
After removing Silencing Shot from all my Shot macros, waiting until the tank starts fighting, sending in my pet, lobbing Explosive Trap at the foot of tank's target then letting loose a Multi, then into usual rhythm... just topped the DPS at 695!
WOW!
Thanks for the help, it seems I'm on track...
Thank Indom for clearing up the Multi Shot question for me! I'm glad we are on the same wave length at times hehe.
Multi Shot does do less dmg now, but it hits EVERYTHING in a 8yd radius. So have 3 x.5 =1.5 vs 1 x1 = 1
As Indom stated, the trap is just for intial pull on AOE don't take the time to throw a trap mid fight unless it's needed for CC as a Ice Trap.
Here might be a little advice to help understand the basic macro mechanics. Blizzard has changed things so we can not make our rotation be a 1 button push to have max dps. It was like that in BC and it was no fun! Some things are great macroed togather.. like your new one, but others will always fight with each other to not work out so well.
Seems you are on the right track. Glad we could be of help. with your Kill Shot, just have that on it's own button and be ready to hit it at ~20%!
Still not sure about the Kill Command macro, seems it would be better and more use of time to hit it on it's own then followed by Focus Fire if you are having to hit it three times every time to get it to go off. So you would have 2 pushes.. instead of 3 to get the same effect.
