The King Krush Solo Tame Campaign Begins

February 9, 2009 By Garwulf 3 Comments

Today marks the day that I begin my quest to solo tame the Big Green Monster who inhabits Sholazar Basin, also known as King Krush. If you’ve been reading my blog for a few months, you’d know that I tried to tame Krush back in December. I set out for Sholazar Basin the moment I hit level 75 to try and get me a big green exotic pet. It didn’t go as planned. 🙁

I thought I was pretty unbreakable in my Season 4 Gladiator gear when I attempted the tame at level 75. King Krush had news for me. He hits like a truck and casts a fear on you that will interrupt the taming every time. After hitting level 76, I abandoned the search for Krush and set my focus on Loque’nahak.

A week or so later I hit level 77 and once again encountered Krush. I hadn’t seen Loque (alive anyway) up until this point, so I figured I’d have another go at the big green Devilsaur. I had done some research on solo taming tactics for Krush after my first rude awakening, and I felt I was better prepared this go around. Uh’uh. He opened up a can of dino whoop-ass on me.

King Krush owns GarwulfSame result. Garwulf versus King Krush = Night Elf beatdown.

So, here we are at level 80, a little hardier, a bit smarter, and we have Loque’nahak. It’s time to tend to some unfinished business.

I wont lie to you… I’ve been a little burned out on World of Warcraft lately. Well, mainly with level 80 content. I still enjoy playing my 19 hunter occasionally, and I’ve had some fun leveling a Death Knight, but beyond that it’s been pretty bleh. If I were raiding still I’d imagine it’d be a different story, but let’s just say my home life is better when I don’t raid. Wife and child + raiding, even just once or twice a week, doesn’t work out so well for daddy. Same goes for arena. My playing hours are more random these days, so it’s harder to get planned and consistent matches in each week. I always seem to find myself scrambling to get 10 games in on Monday night and that just blows.

However, last night while lying in bed I thought hey, taming King Krush sounds like fun! I’m always up for a good taming challenge. I’m weird too, because unlike a lot of other players I enjoy the serenity of solo farming while I’m out searching for my next beastie. Going after Krush sounds like a brilliant plan while I wait for my DK to gather another level or two of rested experience.

Although having Krush in my stable along side Loque’nahak may seem a little redundant and unnecessary, I dont care. It’s all about fun and the thrill of the hunt. To me, setting out and taming the most difficult pet in the game to solo tame is getting my fifteen bucks worth. Of course, I’ve always thought that taming the Sewer Beast would be the ultimate accomplishment, but I’m not Horde.

51/5/15 Spec enabling maximum stamina and damage reduction.I respecced today, taking points out of the Marksman tree in order to pick up 2/2 Survival Instincts and 5/5 Survivalist. I’ve also gone through my bank and assembled what will probably be the best gear setup I have for stacking Stamina and Haste. I even swapped a few of my enchants out for Heavy Borean Armor Kits. I’m serious this time. He will be mine.

More to follow…

Loque’nahak Q&A

December 9, 2008 By Garwulf 82 Comments

Q: How long did it take you to locate and tame the Spirit Beast once you set out to do so?
A: About 12 days and an average of 4-6 hrs searching per day.

Loque'nahak - Spirit BeastQ: Where did you finally tame Loque?
A: Southern spawn location southwest of The Skyreach Pillar.

Q: What time of day was it?
A: Approximately 1pm server time.

Q: Did you know Loque’nahak was going to be there?
A: No.

Q: Were you camping that location?
A: Not really. I was only there about five minutes.

Q: Had you seen Loque at all during the 12 day search prior to taming, and if so, where?
A: Twice. Both times at the spot west of The Nesingwary Base Camp.

Q: What time of day was it when you spotted Loque’s corpse the other 2 times?
A: 11:44pm server and then again the following day at 5:51pm server. 18 hours, 7 mins apart.

A: Is Loque on a 6 hour spawn timer?
Q: I believe so.

King KrushA: Is the spawn timer related to the other rares in Sholazar Basin?
Q: Perhaps. Loque spawned in the spot Krush was killed 12 hours earlier.

Q: Did you patrol for him or camp one location?
A: I tried both, but mostly patrolled.

Q: Would you recommend patrolling for him or camping?
A: I recommend patrolling. There are too many spawn locations to just bet on one.

Q: Should I try to tame Loque once I reach level 76?
A: Absolutely not. Wait until you can get Cold Weather Flying.

Q: How important is it to have a flying mount when trying to find Loque?
A: Very important.

Q: How long does it take to cover all of the spawn points in the basin on a flying mount?
A: About five minutes.

Q: How long does it take to patrol on a ground mount?
A: Too long.

Q: Is it true that Loque’nahak is only out for ten minutes at a time once spawned?
A: No. Loque would never be up that long before being killed or tamed.

Q: How many spawn points did you patrol?
A: 5 for the first 10 days, then 7 the following 2 days.

Q: How many spawn locations are there for Loque’nahak?
A: 7 that I am convinced of.

Q: Where are they?
A : Right here, shown on the map below.

Q: Is Loque’nahak worth all of the trouble?
A: If you’re into extremely uncommon pets that look incredible, then absolutely.

Level 78

December 6, 2008 By Garwulf Leave a Comment

After 7 straight days and 40+ hours spent trying to find and tame the cursed Spirit Beast, I decided to re-prioritize that agenda and start leveling again. I’m still looking for Loque, but it’s been downgraded from an obsession to a casual search. With so many factors preventing a successful tame I think I’m just going to have to get lucky. I’ve tried a few different approaches with no success. I figure that perhaps just as in real life (or IRL for those who speak gamer), I’ll have better success finding this perfect pet when not looking. The same way I found my wife. 😉

I had turned off my Pitbull unit frames for a few days so that I could see the oh-so wonderful silver dragon around Loque’s portrait if I were so lucky. I thought that it would not only grab my attention, but also bring me good rare pet mojo (I just love the site of that silver dragon). Unfortuntely, the only time I saw that silver dragon was on a dead Loque’nahak. At any rate, I turned Pitbull back on so I could see my XP bar. I was pleasantly surprised to see that I’d made a huge dent into 77 while stalking this elusive and prized pet.

I went ahead and knocked out some quests in Sholazar Basin that I hadn’t yet completed so I could ding 78 and start upgarding my gear. The next step was to hit Dalaran and get some recipes so I could start crafting some some sexy new Hunter mail. After that, I went and got revered with the Tuskarr for that nifty Harpoon they sell. My DPS received a substantial buff in one day. It was a beautiful thing. Grinding leather in Sholazar Basin has never been easier.

More later, but for now I am sleepy. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz…

Tips and Advice For Hunters Seeking Loque’nahak

December 3, 2008 By Garwulf 60 Comments

Since I have yet to tame him, I am by no means offering a blueprint for success. However, after spending probably a collective 30-35 hours (at least) looking for him, I have a few pieces of advice that may help others.

Update: With so many high level Hunters after Loque, new information is filtering in daily it seems. Most notably (and unfortunate) are the addition of new spawn locations. From what I’ve been reading, it appears now that there are a minimum of 7 spawn locations for Loque’nahak.

  • Loque’nahak spawns in at least 7 known points across Sholazar Basin. (see map)
  • Before seeking him, wait until level 77 so that you can fly around the basin instead of riding a ground mount.
  • He is on a 6 hour spawn timer.
  • He is only up for approximately 10 minutes once he spawns (I’m assuming this has to do with his transition between the physical and spiritual worlds… I dunno).
  • He will probably not last 2 minutes once spawned before he is ether killed or tamed. I am on a medium population server and it is crazy busy in the basin.
  • Once he is killed, it will take approximately 20 minutes for his corpse to disappear. It is believed that the 6 hour timer starts at the moment of his despawn.
  • If you find his corpse and are a skinner, have at him. Skinning him results in a blue cape drop.
  • Level to 77 so that you can get Cold Weather Flying. This makes things so much easier.
  • If you are a skinner I suggest camping him west of The Nesingwary Camp. Even if you don’t get Loque, you will get rich.
  • Don’t try to find him until you can fly.
  • The east and south spawn areas are also good places for skinning, and they are pretty close together. You can grind gorillas while you pat back and forth between the two points looking for him. The downside is, this place is usually teeming with other players. Lots of competition.
  • To cut down on travel time, you can sit atop The Glimmering Pillar and use Eagle Eye to scout the two northern spawn locations. This obviously requires a flying mount. This also may be contingent upon game settings as well. The downside is, the precious several seconds required to fly down to him may be long enough for someone else to reach him first. It still can be helpful to rule out those two locations before heading off to another.
  • If you have a friend who can help you, have them sit at the western location. Set your hearth to the Nesingwary Camp. No matter where you are, if he should spawn there you could get to him in just over 30 seconds.
  • Get an addon called RareFinder. It sounds an alert and displays a message on your screen if you target or mouse over a rare. After days upon days of looking you can start to fall asleep at the wheel. This helps prevent that.
  • Did I mention you should wait until you can fly before trying to find him. 😉

Lastly, make sure you are using a target macro. I use the following:

/target loque
/target king krush
/target aotona

Spam it while you are flying around and it will target any of the rares in the area. There are claims that only one rare can be present in Sholazar Basin at a given time. However, I have read stories to the contrary. It’s also said that their spawn timers are related. I don’t know whether any of this is true or not, but it’s a good macro to use. If you’re looking to tame King Krush also, like I am, then defnitely use it.

I’ll update this if I can think of anything else. Ultimately, taming Loque’nahak is pure luck. It’s a perfect example of being in the right place at the right time.

Hopefully my right place and right time is coming soon. 😐
