I really feel sorry for you. Having the original Ghost Wolf was a helluva feat. Not only was it an incredibly difficult tame that was only allowed for a short period of time, but DAMN did it look sweet as hell to boot!! That beast was so rare I have only seen ONE hunter with it on my server. He got a /salute and a /point to his pet from me.
Fast forward to Cata. If what I've read is correct, one of the new Spirit Beasts will be a wolf. If what I've seen is correct, it will have the same skin as the original Ghost Wolf. If this all ends up making it from the beta to the live, I really feel sorry for the current owners of the original. Not only will Blizz have made the same skin availabe for a much easier tame, but the new one will get the awesomesauce Spirit Heal. Meanwhile the original (if I understand it correctly) is just a plain old, not as awesome anymore after equalization of pet damage wolf.
Talk about taking it in the junk. Ugh! /condolences

Awwwh, don't feel sad, Lawman. the *neatest* thing I think about playing Hunter is that it breeds conversation. Those of us 'in the know' KNOW that when we see one of the spirit wolves, there is a story attached. And you ask. And those of us 'in the know' KNOW about the original wolves that garnered so much attention, and when that hunter sits back and smiles quietly with pride and says 'yes, it is..." you can slap him or her on the back with Grats and listen to their story.
Now, if they say no, you can still smile and strike up conversation because I am SURE there is a camping story involved, just as I am sure that you can talk with them about the original skin.
Just as Pitch made it way easier to attain the look of Humar, both skins are amazing, and make hunters smile. You just *know* there is a story involved. No matter what it is.

I have always been jealous of that pet.. always. Did I mention ... ALWAYS! I had a hunter that came through our raids with one, Onala. Bless his heart, I think he enjoyed the attention I always gave his wolf.
So yes I feel for you guys who have it. But selfishly.. I'm excited I can get it myself =D
I solo tamed mine pretty easily as a Troll and Berserk back in the day. I actually tried it with a priest and a shammy and we couldn't coordinate it, so I just tried taming him at less than 10% health and 'zerk. Nice being a troll.
I'm a bit miffed, but it's not a 100% replacement. There will (likely) be no other wolf with that skin. Spirit beast... yeah, that's fine, but like Garwulf said, I can always rock mine out as SV or MM.
I will tame the spirit beast one just because, though...

That's what I'm talkin' 'bout.
I'm still enjoying Beast Mastery for PvP right now, and probably wil continue to do so through Cataclysm. But, I'm thinking that my raiding spec will divert back to MM or SV once I hit 85.
Sure the wolf will be seen with other hunters, but it's going to throw people for a loop when they see a MM or SV with it.
