Well said Gar, well said.

/winks at Sunrift and grins mischievously and says “And we even overlook drunken ramblings that are totally off-character.”

hehehee,

Niika,

who's foray into The Lodge was to also pick on Gar for one of his hops-enlightened ramblings as well.   Hmmmm… sending a beer-n-hunter theming here… could it be true?

I registered from lurking to reply to this post.  Well done, good on you!  I've been fortunate to have had players like you assist me along the way and I always try to repay that debt.

I didn't start playing until LK, but I thought I had gotten pretty decent with the class and geared relatively well.  When Cata hit, it seemed to turn into an “ever player for themselves” environment.  When the “l33ts” were gear grinding I chose to avoid heroics to save my sanity.  I was abused by a player in a pug one night and hadn't fired a shot yet.  It seems to me like it's starting to settle down, normalcy is returning.

I've had tard moments, sure.  Take a shortcut around a staircase and forget to release pet.  Ooops!  But I've grouped with what could just as easily be called tanktards or healtards but it just doesn't roll off the lips as well does it?  XD  If every run after the first was done with the same players, or the same talent level of players it seems to me it would get boring pretty fast.  One of the “mechanics” to fights I enjoy most is seeing what players can do well and working around the things we don't.

I had a similar experience back in Wrath.  I was in a random dungeon while leveling my priest and there was a feral druid that was doing horrible dps while wearing cloth gear with int and spirit.  People were mocking him and I felt bad.  He saw that I had BoA gear and asked me in whispers if I knew anything about feral druids.  As it happened my main in Wrath was a feral druid (I'm back to my hunter now…woo hoo!).

He was actually on my server so after the run ended I sent him a group invite from my main and started doing the same things that you did.  I went over stat priorities, talent and glyph choices, best practices for doing top dps, helped him make some macros, and then I gave him 1000g, told him to go to the AH and buy the best green/blue gear he could get according to what we had just discussed and then come back for inspection.

He had a couple items that were questionable, we talked about it to make sure he understood.  He went back to the AH, bought replacement items, came back and his gear was looking much better.  I also helped him enchant his gear properly and explain the benefits of using the best quality gems and enchants once he got to level icon_eek.

All in all I spent over 2 hours helping him out, suggesting addons and macros, pointing him to appropriate websites, and just making sure he understood the basics of WoW.  I didn't hear from him again for probably two months and just figured he was doing his thing.  Then one day out of the blue I got a /whisper and found out he had just started raiding heroic ICC and was one of the top dps in his guild.  He just wanted to thank me for helping him out.  I certainly got frustrated a couple of times when I was helping him out, but it sure felt good to know that the time I spent with him ended up changing his whole game experience.  He wasn't a bad player, he just needed a push in the right direction and didn't know where to go to find information.

One thing to keep in mind too. Leveling is WAY faster then when I first did it. Because people can blow through it so fast, most aren't learning how to properly play their class/role.

Example. An 85 Hunter recently joined the guild I'm in. Credit to her, she was geared and stuff properly, BUT she freaked out when we asked her to trap a target because she had leveled as BM and never had to trap anything as her pet usually grabbed everything. I took her under my wing and told her what and how to do it, plus showed her a few examples. It took her a few runs to get things working smoothly, but now she is trapping with the best of us.

A lot of Hunters out there seem to think we are just about dps and thats it. I try to correct them on this and show them the error of their ways.

Something to mention also, I never force things on my fellow Hunters. If they ask for advice, I give it to them. If a Hunter seems content with gearing wrong, etc. but are still enjoying themselves, I leave them be.

Those are some good points Takaas, very. Given the short amount of time I've played WoW and speaking with players who have been playing if not since the game's introduction, close to it sounds as though much has changed.

I've experienced firsthand in game a few things you mention. I've seen it on this site. 'I'm level 85, make me good'. I've even tossed up a post or two trying to simplify stuff for people (god help em if they used any of it) and in some cases people simply can't be bothered to read or practice. You can get all the 'help' you want from sites like this and others and the players who frequent them but if you aren't willing to put in the time you'll never be decent. Pretty much like the real world.

Fortunately lawman30 had the pleasure of helping a person who seems to have genuinely needed and wanted it. That was cool.

Crowlin….way to go!

To all those who made their first post a post in this thread, I think it speaks volumes about your character that you feel strongly enough about helping people that you choose this topic to share your thoughts.  Way to go!

Let's each of us carry the good vibe from this thread into the game with us like a breath of fresh air and make Azeroth a better place for everyone.

And if feeling good in game goes with a Guinness in hand, well how bad can that be?  =)

Wow. Just wow. Thank you for sharing that with us Lawman icon_smile That was pretty inspiring, along the road I myself ended up getting annoyed at people not playing their class right (even though I make mistakes on my alts a little too often at times) – but when ever I see someone who needs help – I will just think “What Would Lawman Do?” WWLD!! I feel pretty terrible, just this morning a hunter was asking me what was the best spec for PVP – he was level 11 or so – and I just thought really.. You're asking me, you're probably just trolling because obviously it depends on which attacks you have available, when really I should have talked to him for awhile and directed him to this site – but I assumed the worst. Wish I had read your post earlier – I will do my best to help others in the future icon_smile

Having to put up with what we do, I think does help Hunters in one way. I think it brings us together more. Ive found the Hunter community a bit more friendly then other classes. My secondary is a Retribution Paladin and I found a whole lot more of people there that could care less about helping you out. I get a lot of turned up noses there. Ive yet to find a really great site like this one or Warcraft Hunters Union. Ive found that even the Hunters within the guild seem to have a special bond compared to the other classes. Dont get me wrong, we do have a few “bad apples”, but mostly we are a very helpful, friendly community from the things Ive seen.

I reg'd just to reply to this post (although I plan on staying awhile after some lurking)

First off to the OP, thanks! for doing that, we should all set such an example.

Some background:

I am a 100% total “noob” to WOW (I am on day 37 playing, thats creation of account, not 37days of actual play time)

To make matters worse the way I was cohersed into playing was that I was to be given a lvl icon_eek hunter… (my brother's, yeah I know against TOS blah blah blah)

But that being said I was basically throw right into the lions den, told to get to 85 asap and that my guildies would then start running with me for 333/346/359s+

Awesome I thought, until I logged in. I had no idea what I was doing. But I pushed forward, and luckily I ran into a lot of players (some even non-hunters) that offered their assistance, that even they may have thought as small answer, that actually were IMMENSE in the progression of my toon/knowledge of the game. but for every good apple there were A LOT more bad I literally cant express to you how many a%^$oles there have been.

Bliz has a lot of work to do on the learning curve for the game. I still find myself using outside resources to learn what new talents spells do (on my alts).

One thing that I have also learned is that a lot of players dont think outside the box, once “paragon” says XX is the best XX then it is set in stone. I have been kicked from multiple instances because I refuse to use a wolf when I am using my Cat because “the wolf does better dps” when the cat infact brings the 549+ agility and thus better dps for not only hunters but druids and shamy dps in the group.

Same can be said with PVP gear in place of PvE. Yes I understand that in top DPS it MAY make a difference but for those of us that are sub 359ilvl it may actually be better gear for us and in some of the pieces you can reforge out of res, and into a PvE stat. I think that as hunters we are SOO agility needy that PvP makes sense sometimes.

But I digress, I am more than happy now that I am this far in. For a progress report I am now a lvl 85 SV hunter 349 ilvl and a couple weeks into (wiping lol) raids. to top it off I am the top 1-3 dps in our guild (depending on boss).

So thanks to all that could have possibly helped me (mannoroth) and I hope that this inspires everyone else to help when asked or while you are waiting to que just ask if anyone needs help icon_smile

Lib-If you find you like the game (okay playing a hunter as I don't speak of others here) and do have the time I'd highly recommend you build a new character from scratch. You'll find the learning curve to be much less painful and a helluva lot of fun. On that, Blizz intentionally does that lack of info thing-part of the 'gaming experience' or something. That's why sites like this and a couple of others are so valuable. I've not played long and have probably spent as much time reading as playing.

It's good that you have had some people help you but you are truly missing out on a lot starting where you have. Welcome to the joint by the way

Oh of course! I have a lvl 27 druid as well as a 62 DK, the lure was that I wouldnt have to grind out to 65 for a month or two before getting to play with the rest of the guild in raids. But the learning curve is still pretty steep. I have other friends who have all but given up because they hate leveling through the 60-85, and if they have gotten to 85 the learning that they think they have doesnt always equate to the best (insert class/spec here).  Not everyone runs dungeons, in fact I am willing to bet that most of our lower guildies quest their way up through 85.

I will have to shed some light on this more, and document my wifes experience of wow, when she starts (for the first time) in about a month.  I just hope that Bliz doesnt forget that there are still in fact people who havent ever played that are picking the game up today.

Lib-I play entirely solo, don't do guilds, raids or lunch. Anything I've ever written here is mainly from a new players perspective. I've been playing for maybe 8 mos now. I call myself casually obsessed icon_smile

I'd hazard the vast majority of players aren't hardcore-far from it. Hence why it was nice to see lawman help a player who actually needed it and was prepared to listen. It's not unique but I'd say it's scarce.

Agio, this is the basis for my guild, pretty much, and we are one of the largest on Moon Guard.  We recognize that icon_eek% (going off the icon_eek/20 rule) of players want a more casual experience, like to level, and would rather do it in a group of friends.  I see Lawmans every day, within the people I've grown to know over 4 years, and know that they do exist.  I do hope that when your wife comes to game, that she enjoys her time growing with others in the game just as much.  The Lawmans of Azeroth, are gold.  I don't think Blizzard has forgotten us at all.  Being a level 19 guild has some pretty sweet perks.

Niika-It is LibertySyclone's wife who is coming to Wow. Not mine, she left me for another woman. Aside from that information I really didn't need to share, I wasn't saying all guilds are bad or people in game are. Far from it. Guilds just aren't my gig. Anyhow, don't want to see this thread hijacked with my ramblings so…..I'm thinking of asking lawman30 to marry me; maybe we can have baby Gnarfs or would it be Dwomes?

Agio, while I apologize for screwing that up, you have me in stitches with your tongue-in-cheek response, and thank you for that, intentional or not.  Huge hugs coming your way, and next time I proffer response, may I have coffee in hand BEFORE my Ginger and gin morning after. icon_biggrin

Lawman, guys like you are one of the reasons I still enjoy playing the game. Throughout my tenure as a hunter I have helped a lot of people, though not necessarily to the extent that you did in this case. I love when newer players come to me for advice or when I can teach someone about the class.

I hope the positive players stick around and continue to play, though since Cataclysm has come out I have noticed a lot less of the unsavory characters that used to be a huge problem in the community.
