Darrwyn has recently attained the new cap of 85.
He did this by getting out of Vashj'Ir as soon as he could, then completing the entire Hyjal quest line, getting clear of Deepholm after freeing up the middle pillar piece and continuing through all the Schnott quests in Uldum. Somewhere chasing some shreds of meat he dinged 85.
Obviously, I enjoyed some areas more than others. Loved Hyjal, love Uldum so far. Meh to the others. But why?
I just hated the underwater area. Won't do it again, ever! Will go out there to where the dungeon is, but that's it. I appreciate some others love the place, I just hated it.
Deepholm was marginally better than Vashj'Ir, but depressingly so.
Let me say, it wasn't because the quests are hard. Far from it, in fact I think many are too easy. The hardest by far was the mess on the gunship, but that could simply have been the number of people doing the same quests; both Alliance and Horde in such close quarters and the (hopefully introductory) fast respawn rate of the bad guys. I personally felt the quests were not challenging enough! And I am not a 6 year veteran, I've only been playing since April '10. I ask myself, if the quests aren't going to be a challenge, why not just have an explore requirement and be done with it?
What was that? How was I geared? I had a couple of T9 and couple of T10 pieces, with a smattering of 264 knick knacks. On C day I was geared around 2900 (Wowheroes) so I was not supergeared.
That gets me into another issue: gear. I read Drach's lament of the epic gear that had been worked so hard for, and I sympathise. I personally think the leap from WoLK epic to green Cata gear was too much. Presumably, in a couple of months, maybe sooner, players new to are just going to follow the warchief's call (and the alliance equivalent) and zoom out to the new zones with gear acquired through questing. They won't even know about the epic struggle with the Lich King because it's old news. They'll have their nice shiney blue 187 gear and hit the new zones with a smattering of 200 pieces, maybe. Ok, they should find the quests a challenge. They certainy won't struggle through WoLK dungeons repeatedly to be able to buy 216, 226, 232, 252 gear by shopping at the emblem vendors. They'll go from 187 and 200 gear to 271 and higher just by questing!
Personally, I would have preferred to retain the value of the older gear. If the epic to cata green wasn't such a leap, real thought would have been needed whether to keep the old or adopt the new. When I had a choice of, for example +64 Agility, + 92 Stamina, Crit +34, Haste +34 and a new Agility +122 Stamina +188 green, of course I'll take the green. Had the choice involved a +88 Agility, +126 Stamina, the choice would have been a lot harder.
Having said all that, despite my personal dislike of some of the new zones, their storylines are captivating and actually make sense. It's not just an accumulation of meaningless tasks, and that is all to the good. Every quest drives the story along, and that is the strength of the new expansion. I have started a Worgen and a Goblin just to look at their starting zones and get a feel for them. I have completed neither at this stage, but since Worgen are in the Alliance, I'll not progress past the end of the Gilneas start area. The goblins though, will be having a new rogue soon, I think. I've had a quick look, and I love their different faces, and they actually look mean, not cutesy.
Yeah, all in all, well done, Blizzard. As I said, when almost everything is so good, it's hard to be critical.

Nice thoughts Darrwyn, yea I love how the quests really move the story along, for the most part at least! I was skeptical at first because of so many big changes, but I agree with you, I think they got it right.
I have to admit, i thought when I read your title you were going to be lamenting the loss of critical strike ratiing lol. Mine's gone down a bunch losing out all of my socketed gear for sure, but I like your post much better .
Hi Darrwyn.....grats on getting to 85....my hunter is only 81 and I have not gotten out of the watery grave yet and yes I fully agree with you about this water area and it just seems to go on forever and ever. I have also been playing my Paladin as he has always been my bread winner so have been doing a lot of farming with him (mining) and my son has been making me some decent gear....but this has been a very confusing thing as you pointed out with the greens being better than my purples stuff that I worked so hard for and in some cases paid a lot of gold for. The confusing part is my gear score (drives me crazy) has dropped I was around 5600 with my hunter now he is down to 4700...and my question is does gear score mean anything anymore and if it does just what does it mean. This dang gear score thing has keep me out of raids and unless you have experience in dungeons they dont want you either...so just how do you work around this...I for one refuse to play with the nasty mouth kids and probably grown ups too that infest pugs and make you feel like a total idiot and in my opinion its getting worse not better. So not doing raids has severely limited the quality of my gear.
I have also been doing a lot of exploring and yes some taming too...I discovered a green tea tiger in Felwood and of course went and got the dog and the white fox in Gilneas....my stable is up to about 14 now......its so great to be able to fly in the old kingdoms and go to many areas I never had seen that much of...for the most part I am really enjoying this new expansion and I am taking my time leveling and working on my professions and of course taming. I did join another guild on with my hunter but it is large and for the most part its full of what I call "bank sitters" how do the get anthing done in the game when all the do is type in guild chant...beats me!!!! I only joined it just to see what I am missing out on with the new guild stuff..and so far I dont understand much of it.
Really enjoyed you post...............Riv

Thanks for your feedback, Drach & Riv.
Riv, I heartily agree with you on the gearscore and the foulmouthed kids issues. I can understand that gearscore should provide an indication that a player is sufficiently geared to cope, but too many raiders want to waltz through without any complications. There's a word for that and it starts with 'wan...' and ends in '...king' my opinion. Blizzard have gear requirements for their instance and raids, that should be enough.
And the foulmouthed kids! My 15yo started coming out with stuff like, "... in the battlefield and we just raping the allys..." and I pulled him up real fast. Nothing is evey funny about rape and while they use that terminology in game because they can't use the four letter word that sounds like truck, it should be put on the banned word list in my opinion. Remember that at this time of yar a lot of kids are on holidays, so it's just something we need to tolerate for a while. My 9 yo daughter gets on, makes a character, takes her to about level 5 and starts all over again. ot my way of having fun, but she has a ball, so remember no all the kids are foul mouthed pricks.
Guilds! I absolutely detest the random guild invites that pop up all the time, from the same guilds whenever I'm guildless. It might be because I've made a new toon, it might because I got annoyed with the guild chat. But I WILL NOT join a guild who pops up random invites. And if the guild chat ever deteriorates to the standard of General, I leave it. The bonuses aren't good enough to put up with what I don't tolerate in my home.
On to more pleasant subjects... I've ben patrolling storm peaks, Zul Drak (I can't remember the correct spelling) and Ambermill Lodge for a glimpse of the spirit beasts while queuing for randoms. I picked up a new 333 ring last night, so I may qualify for heroics now... will check it out tonight.
Onwards and upwards.... Tally Ho!!!
