I've been silently stalking the forum for about a week and you've all made me cry. There's far too much useful information and it takes too long to read > anyways, hello. I'm a new hunter looking to devel into both arena/ bg PVP and some basic raiding (I think until Cataclysm comes out I don't really want to concern myself with serious raiding). My only other is a feral/ restoration Druid.
Anyways, figured I'd register and converse with people who have frankly more intelligent opinions than that of a troll in Trade Chat. My first question is how to increase my FPS and decrease my latency. Here's a screen cap of what I'm dealing with. In all honesty I don't know what half the settings add/ take away so I leave them high.
I had much better FPS when I put them all on low but I lost detail to see ground effects and other important visual ques to "get out of the fire" if you know what I mean. I'm wanting to install a few more addons but I'm worried if I put anymore fat on my interface I'll disconnect all too frequently (I plan on disabling Questhelper soon now that I'm BG grinding).
It would be awesome if someone could advice me on how to optimise for the best visual performance for seeing the pertinent effects while getting the best FPS. I'm unsure what to do about my latency as well but I'm going to assume that's my terrible connection that's shared through a router.
In general, hello and thanks for running/ being members of the website. It's entirely useful.
EDIT: Forgot to add my screenshot link, haha.

My knowledge is lacking when it comes to game performance. If I'm having problems I usually pester a guildy who I know has more knowledge of the stuff. However I have found one thing that I look to right away when I have issues like this. Addons. I see you are using Questhelper. In my experience that drug my computer/game way down, so I quit using it. There have been other addons that I dropped because they slowed things way down. I would maybe look into that area. There could be other issues, but this is a spot that I've had problems in.

Ack, it would really help if you would let us know what your video card is and how much memory it has on it, as well as how much memory you have in your system. What type of computer you are using would be helpful as well. What resolution are you running the game in? In the meantime, it will certainly help to turn down your settings to at least 50%. I myself am on a laptop that runs hot, so I turn everything way down. I have issues with certain boss fights, and when vanity pets come out, but generally, I am fine raiding on 30% for everything and turning off the full screen glow effect.
This link will help you optimize your game performance for you, I believe, as well as give you some tips.

Firstly, I think you notice Blizzard limited the max. FPS to 60, I never find a way to increase the cap..
Anyone tell me if I'm wrong or something...
- Do you really need Recount while Questing, maybie you only let it pop up in dungeons. I don't know if there's an option for that.
- I don't know the exact amount of resource MobMap needs compared to Questhelper, but I think you could try this out.
MobMap is a creat Questaddon anyway.
- I'm not completely sure about that, but Windowmode needs MORE resources!
I hope i could help you with some things and please excuse my bad English Skills, I'm from Germany.
One thing, do you need Silenced Shot to interrupt? If not, macro it to your main abilities (best match is chimera shot) for increased dps in dungeons.
Why chimera shot is easy: 10s cd while Silenced Shot got 20s... Every second chimera you also shot a Silenced Shot
/cast Silenced Shot
/cast Chimera Shot

with that setup, is your PC also running hotter than usual? What is your fan running at? And if you place a small desk fan directly on the unit, does your fps improve?
OOH! And look into getting Deadly Boss Mods. Even when I am running on crystal clear highest settings, it helps to alert you to Get Out of the Poo. "run AWAY, little girl..." I personally get too focused, and the added nudge to move helps.

I am not surprised that you used to overheat, and am happy to hear that the fans help.. I am thinking now that it may be the power supply not being strong enough for the video card and your processors. Can you upgrade your PS? Also, you might also not have enough memory on the video card itself, especially if you like to clock it out on effects. Finish all this with making 100% sure you have the latest drivers. There are known issues with that particular card and Blizzard games, but they are working on them.
I am very visual as well, but love what DBM adds. KILLS me to turn down distance viewing in Dalaran. JUST KILLS ME. By the way, if you think it's sparkly now, wait until the end-game raids. :-p

Well, sexy map will increase your FPS if you disable it...
One of the best addOns I own - http://wow.curse.com/downloads.....spx Addon Control Panel... it let's you enable and disable addons without having to relog.
Ground Clutter Density and Radius are both definitely something you need to put on lowest possible, they use up FPS and don't do much visually (adds the small 2d plants on the ground etc...)
Full screen glow effect! Take that off! I've found it actually makes the game look more fuzzy then anything... when it's off the game loots very clear! Improves FPS dramatically!
Taking off death effect will improve your FPS when you're uh... dead. (Basically takes off the glowyness of death).
Last but not least, Projected Textures. Disable that one too and you're set! With the settings I've listed your gaming experience is still very premium! Just much faster! I'm a sucker for graphics and I am content with these settings, I wouldn't go any lower.
If you have gearscore that addOn gives you abit of lag, and gives lots of other players lag! (Always disable when in raids!)
Do these things above, and you'll be much better off!
Oh, I have shadows, view distance and weather effects completely turned off almost. No real benefit to them from what I've seen. Nah- my power supply should be fine, it's a 600watt. Video card should be updated. I have a lot of random shit running in the background but seeing as it's in 'code', I don't want to turn it off. The Blizz link you had said to disable all of it but it won't let me disable all and re-check things that I know I need (ie. my keyboard management software). I don't know why computer companies can't just make all the .exe/.dll/ .whateverextentions clear-cut and fairly easy to read via their purpose. I'd assume they are if you knew the lettering system used, but it really should be easier to decypher.

Hakuro, thank you for the GearScore recommendation for raids. It makes sense, and I never thought of that. When I used to use MySRP or something like that, it would take me forever to load in Dalaran.
Thanks also for the add-on control addon.

Oh yes.. I don't really notice the Blizzard quest helper since I hit level .
You don't really need a addon for quest no longer…
Snowfall Keypress is an addon for a slightly higher dps and so on!
"This addon accelerates key bindings so that they are activated by keypress rather than key release. This allows you to activate your abilities faster than you could otherwise. This can really make a difference for situations where you need to react quickly, like when casting heals, when dispelling, when interrupting spells, or in PvP. In these situations, the addon can have an effect similar to reducing your network latency by 100ms. Of course, the exact impact depends entirely upon how much time you personally spend between key press and release."
