Skitterflame

Skitterflame - Rare Lava Spider in Patch 4.2

See my Patch 4.2 Rare Pet Briefing Post for an updated guide on how to tame Skitterflame, as well as the other 9 Patch 4.2 Taming Challenge pets.

Skitterflame is another of the rare beast taming challenges being added in Patch 4.2. He’s a red lava spider found on Fireplume Peak in the Molten Front.

The trick to taming Skitterflame is you must cool him down enough so that you can tame him. Also, his damage scales based on his current energy level. As you’ll see in the video, he hits pretty hard when at full energy. 😉

So… you need to use ice traps to not only snare him to protect yourself from his blows, but also to get him cooled down enough for taming. The video states that he becomes tamable at around 20% energy.

As far as whether Frost traps will work on him… I don’t know. If they do cool him down, then I’d imagine a good technique would be to cool him to freeze him to a level just before his buff falls off, break the trap, then tame him as he wades through a Frost Trap. This is similar to the approach used for Solix.

The other important thing worth mentioning… you can’t let Skitterflame get too cold, or else he’ll immediately go belly up. If his energy level drops to zero then he immediately dies. Now you don’t want that to happen, so be sure to watch for when his Super Heated buff falls off. If he’s currently trapped, then you’ll need to break him out of it and begin taming.

  1. I set a freezing trap then when he came out of that I hit him with wyvern sting, then tamed him while he was sleeping! Worked like a charm.

  2. You can do this solo easy if you get him in a Freezing Trap (when he is outside the lava of course) and then use Wyvern Sting on him when he comes out of the trap. When he is sleeping you can tame him 🙂

  3. Gar, keeping with my ‘I don’t really care” mantra I’ve not been following the patch updates so props as always.
Do you know if they’ve added an achievement if you tame one of the new rares as a Paladin called ‘Sir-Hops-A-Lot’ or is that pally trying to fly without a mount?
