Level 58 hunter trying to get good by the time i hit 85. - General Hunter Discussion - Hunter Forums

I will keep this pve oriented. I've never leveled a hunter before, but I am having a lot of fun, and am thinking about making it my secondary main. The guild I am in is a growing guild that plans to raid, and I seem to be the only active hunter…at 58? I would like to be decent and not noobish by the time I raid with the guild, but to this point, I have been too scared to even run a dungeon on him due to such bad reputation of the hunter class. Not to mention, the hunter takes a lot more finesse, skill, etc. than I thought it would.
So what do I do in dungeons? Ranged dps, but after that I'm not really sure. I've been with hunters who cc and then ones who just nuke from afar. So far this is what I can think of in terms of what I'm supposed to do:
1. Put pet in passive/defensive
2. Turn growl off
3. Designate a symbol for the target that the leader wants me to cc. (After a rogue's sap if there is one…do I launch a freezing trap with trap launcher?)
After that I'm not really sure. After my target gets cc'd if I don't mess it up, how do I get the aggro back on the tank? Who do I send my pet to? The tank's target? The adds if they target our healer? When am I supposed to kite an enemy? Will I need to practice chain trapping, and what shots do I use for this?
As you can see I have tons of questions/concerns. Any help would be awesome.

Offline(1) Aggro: If you are with a good tank, aggro shouldn't be an issue. If you notice you are pulling aggro, feign death. The tank should be picking up anything that wasn't crowd controlled. Once you get misdirect, you should always throw it on the tank before trapping, etc.
(2) You should always go after the tanks target unless told otherwise.
(3) Your tank should be picking up anything that isn't crowd controlled. If you aren't currently crowd controlling something I always like to throw a freeze trap out between the healer and the mob.
(4) Unless its special circumstances, you should not have to be kiting anything. If something needs kited, the group will ask.
(5) I have rarely had to chain trap anything. Most instance/raids I have been in, you trap the target and by the time the trap expires your group will be ready to kill it, if not sooner. If they are having trouble killing things fast enough, just drop another trap at the feet of your trap target and freeze it again. With the addition of trap launcher, its much easier to trap and keep things trapped.
NOTE: If you're looking for more info, post your armory from the official WoW site so that we can see what spec you are running and what kind of gear, etc you have.

1. Put pet in passive/defensive ——— Defensive seems to be best for most situations.
2. Turn growl off —— Growl should be off3. Designate a symbol for the target that the leader wants me to cc. (After a rogue's sap if there is one…do I launch a freezing trap with trap launcher?) ——— The most common symbol used for the Hunter's CC is the blue square. If it's different the tank "usually" lets you know ;-)
You should set up a macro for the Trap Launch and Freeze trap.
Feign Death is FANTASTIC btw ;-)
