Hello.
I've only been playing WoW for about 6 weeks, so let me preface this by admitting I have no clue what I'm talking about.
That being said, I figured this was the best place to start getting a clue. I've already done quite a bit of reading here and on the WHU, so anything I do "know" is basically going to be taken from those places, so my apologies if I'm taking anything out of context.
I'm BM and my tenacity pet (bear) is specced for tanking. Up until lvl 60 I've been soloing through quests and grinding. Other than learning the ins and outs of the game itself and the hunter basics (wingclips, jumpshots, ect), I haven't really run into many troubles nor questions that couldn't be answered without a simple Google search, but now that I've decided to join the community as it were, I feel that I should check to see that I'm not breaking any cardinal rules of the class, ie not being a "huntard".
I have a million questions, but let me not overextend my welcome and keep it to just the most pressing issues atm…
I've been using the seeker to find random 5 man dungeons in order to get used to playing with others and these are some of things I'm finding:
In instances, I know that:
- Keep my pet on passive (some say defensive is okay (this is what I do, actually)).
- Turn off Growl
- Have enough ammo!
- Dismiss my pet when jumping off ledges
- Be careful with Multishot
- Not generate more than 30% more threat than the tank
1) That's all fine and good, but during a few runs I've been asked to take my pet off "taunt". Now, I'm guessing since Growl is already turned off they are talking about Thunderstomp? I've never seen this raised as an issue. Obviously if it's generating threat I can see how it would be considered a negative, but doesnt TS also do quite a bit of damage? Am I really supposed to keep this off? During the runs where I wasn't spoken to at all, and where TS was active, everything seemed to run very smoothly. In fact, and this may just be a coincidence, but during these times, it seems that there were less bad pulls then when it was left off.
edit: Ah, Taunt, as in the pet talent. I'm running on very little sleep… I didn't even assign points to that yet. So that explains that, however the question still stands, Should Tunderstomp be off during instances?
2) Speaking of which. Not to be one of those guys that points fingers (especially while being a total newb myself), but during some of these instances, some of the tanks aren't exactly holding their own. On more than one occasion multiple mobs have come straight towards me or the healer. Normally I would lay a freeze trap, but usually someone just breaks it. In most cases it's more than a single mob, anyway. Now my question is, what am actually supposed to do here? Should I send my pet to intercept? Run towards it them in an attempt to draw them back to the tank? I really don't know! Being left with that deer-in-the-headlights feeling is pretty unnerving. I'm sure I looked like an idiot jumping around trying to get a hold on things, so any advice here on the proper way to save the day would be very welcome.
3) Speaking of proper pet etiquette, in the event my pet is about to die, do I call him back beforehand for a few secs to allow mend pet to do it's thing or will that just bring the mob back as well? Normally I'm pretty good at using MP proactively, but on a couple occasions it got pretty hairy there. One time he did bite it and it made me feel pretty stupid. Also, no one waited for me (or him) to get ready again, but that's another issue…
4) I do alright toggling between Viper/Hawk, but there are still some places where I get pretty low on mana. It seems that the majority of non-hunters forget that we use it…? No one ever replenishes me and 9/10 the tank is off to the next pull before I'm even halfway back to capacity. My question is, should I ask them to wait? Should I use mana potions?! I realize a lowly 65 BM hunter isn't going to be topping any DPS charts, but I'd like to be able to stay in Hawk as much as I can while actually shooting. My guess is to ask to them to wait, but I don't wanna piss anyone off. This is also the first MMO I've ever played and I'm not exactly used to playing with real people. :-/
5) Finally, Bestial Wrath, WHEN the hell am I supposed to be using this?! I want to say right out of the gate, then immediately when it comes off cool down, use it again, but this seems unintuitive. I'm finding I want to save it for when a pull goes wrong or for the higher level sub bosses. However, using this logic I find that oftentimes I'm not using it all. I'm desperatety trying to "save" it for the right occasion, but in the end I think I'm under using it.
I guess that's it, for now.
Let me just say that It's really great to be here. I look forward to learning from all of you and hopefully one day contributing myself. Until then, please help me not be that guy that makes the rest of us look bad. Thanks!
edit: It would appear the title of this thread is already making me look bad!

OfflineWelcome to the Lodge!!!!
1 - Sounds like you are really coming along nicely. Hopefully I can help with a bit more information, and I'm sure others can add to it. Keep in mind that a gorilla when in BM, is a tanking pet. So, unless the tank has bought a clue, your King Kong will be fighting for the mobs attention. Not a pretty place to put a newly-grooming tank in. Thunderstomp and growl should be off, unless you know your tank. OR, get a cat. Cats add very nicely to your dps, and rarely grab aggro, IMHO.
2 – learning to tank properly is just the same as learning to hunt, or to lock or to heal. Everyone is growing. Some will just know instinctively how to grab all mobs, including those that the mage backs into by accident, and some will… well… end up on your "Oh Shit, it's Him!" list. Hunters have a ton of tools available to accomodate. I agree, I do not have luck with the ice trap (unless agressively aggro'ing one mob away, then trapping outside of Sunder or Consecrate or Icy Fall From Above) in a group I am not familiar with, however, Frost Trap is a Healer's Friend. I usually buddy up near the healer, drop a frost in front, and if a mob breaks loose, kite it away. To dance like that is friggin' fun on all levels. Misdirect on the tank helps a boatload as well.
3 – Bring Pet Back. Heal and let him run by your side. Pugs will not wait for you to rez, and most healers I know do not heal pets. (cept those healers who have a hunter, they carry a special place in my heart and I uber protect them. Feel free to MD the healer if they intentionally kill the pet. I jest… sort of.)
4 – Maybe it's just me, but I never ask for replenishment in pugs, in case the healer is desperate. I'll holler out 'mana' and sit, even if they move on. I find that the healer often joins me, which sets the tank on dead stoppage. I flip between Viper and Hawk in between combat, and generally do not have a problem at my level, however, do remember those days… There's a great macro on this site for flipping between the two. I find that I will spend an entire chain-pullling pug now, in Viper, then I have someone whining about my lack of DPS. It just makes me smile, and laugh asking if an 11 minute H UK run is not fast enough for them, then they can join me in ICC when I can top 10K, if they really want to see me at work.
Gawd, that sounds cocky. I blame Gar.
5- Hmmm… I use BW in PVP, so am dead useless about advising you here. Once you hit 70 though, I'd pop Misdirect, then BW on boss fights. Is that you are looking for?

OfflineI'm not exactly the King of Hunter's so I'll leave it up to Garwulf to give you advice about builds and pets, but I can give you some hard won insight from multiple toons.
Most random 5 man dungeons win or lose based on the tank and to a slightly lesser extent the healer. A good tank can make a bad healer look good, but a great healer has a hard time making a terrible tank look even mediocre. There are many tanks that are spec'd for DPS and queue as tank in order to get faster queue's or who just plain don't know what they are doing. So for me, I base everything on the tanks ability to hold aggro. I'd recommend getting some sort of aggro meter so you know when to back off and when to hit hard. If a tank is having a hard time holding aggro, I'd probably take TS off. IMO it's better to have a smooth run with no wiping than to be a few ticks higher on the DPS meter.
As a hunter, I've found the best way to shed aggro is to do my best not to grab it in the first place. I know this is much easier said than done, but with a bit of practice it's easy to fly under the radar. If I do pull aggro, whether it was by accident or to pull a mob of the healer, I usually run toward the tank and then feign death. This seems to do a decent job of dumping mobs back onto the tank.
One trick I've found is the using only Steady Shot in AoTV. I'll throw out all my hard hitting shots in Dragonhawk, then switch to Viper while they are on cd and fire off two SS. Even if I'm running way low on mana, this will keep me going through for a long time. If it really comes down to the wire, throw on Viper and just autoshot and SS through a mob or two till you get back to full mana.
I hope this helps.

Thanks for the welcome, Niika!
I'll just keep the bullet thing going for simplicity's sake.
1) Aha! You bring up an excellent point!
a newly-grooming tank
Funny, I thought I was the only person learning this game! Honestly, that never even occured to me. I think I actually assumed that 90% of pre
's were just vets leveling alts. Especially someone in a tank role. That really puts things in perspective. I will keep TS and Growl turned off from now on. Still, and this is me being cocky, I could tank these 60's dungeons myself.
2) Kiting, yes. Not very good at it yet. I can do it in an WIDE open area, but within walls and under pressure is another story. I suppose so long as I'm leading them away from the healer into an area we've already been through, I won't attract any unwanted mobs. I was paranoid about moving too far away from the group though, so I panicked!
I will attempt to stick closer to the healer in the future, though. As I've said, I'm not really used to sharing screen space with others. My gaming in the past consisted of Survival Horror, Racing, and Shumps, so generally during this dungeons I pick a place to the side away from the action so I can see what I'm doing. I will try to get better with that.
3) Haha! I'll do that!
Seriously, that's great to know. Sometimes I think maybe MP will magically jump back out of the danger zone, but I know deep down when it's inching down too fast it will run out before the mob does.
4) Cool. I have plenty of potions and consumables being that I've solo'd so long. I generally wait for Viper and time to get back up to full, before moving on, just wanted to be sure. I think Viper while being a great asset is also a crutch. If we didn't have it, we'd know we had to sit and drink. I look at it like, "why waste a potion (ect) when I can get it for free. I should try to abandon that way of thinking.
I also didn't realize that when in a pinch and running low, you could toggle between the two just for certain shots. I pretty much wait for a mob to go down then go right into Viper. I never thought of actually being in Viper during steady shot, then switching to Hawk to fire off an Arcane, then back again. In any event, I think this is probably all about practice in the end.
5) In the interem I was reading a couple of FAQs on the Blizz board and came across something I hadn't really taken into consideration. That being to KNOW the instance beforehand! I guess if someone is making the same run over and over with a group, they know exactly when each encounter is coming and are able to plan ahead. Also, it didn'y occur to me to time BW with pther cool downs to optimize DPS…so much to learn.
I appreciate the reply! I'll be back at it tonight and hopefully be able to apply some this. Not that I'm wishing blood thristy mobs on the group's healer…well, not unless she/he kills my pet…

Great to get confirmation on this, thank you! After reading something similar earlier today, it really hit home. My fear was that the changing back and forth would be detrimental to overall DPS, but I also realize that DPS isn't something I really need worry about in lower level dungeons, either. Staying alive and productive are top priority. And not looking like an ass! That's always a good thing.
As far as the 5 mans are concerned, I'm glad you said it. I'm sure people cursed me out for doing stupid stuff as well. In one dungeon the warlock was ALL over the place. Running in the wrong direction, pulling mobs, it was a real mess, but I wasn't irritated in the least. For some reason the tank lossing aggro got on my nerves, though. I guess after 15 or so levels of Thunderstomping, Volleying AOE madness, I was feeling I could do a better job. I'm sure I couldn't…
I will definitely look into the threat meter. I'm a little paranoid about addons, though. This may sound hypocritical, but I'm playing WoW on a PC I do my business/school work on. It's very streamlined and no nosense. I don't browse unknown websites or DL torrents of any kind on it. I won't even let my wife use it. I have a crappy old laptop for that kinda stuff. Anyway, as soon as I saw the words "addon" and "keylogger" in the same sentence, I wasn't going anywhere near an addon site. I guess if I need them, I need them. Hopefully places like Curse are safe. I'll check em' out.
Thanks for the advice!

I use the Curse Client exclusively. It's easy, lightweight and runs smooth. I haven't had any malicious software problems yet. Oh and I'm an engineering major so my computer is my lifeblood ![]()

Thanks for the offer, that woulda been awesome. Sadly, I'm on Detheroc.
Good to hear about Curse. I'm taking classes on 3-D and compositing, so I have a bunch of apps residing on my hdd. Before I booted my wife off of my box, she got me a nice virus that forced me to reformat. I suffered a couple days of downtime trying to get back to speed, so I'm extra cautious these days.
Just to be sure, no addon folder should ever contain an .exe, yes? I forget which format they are coded in, but I remember reading that exes were a big red flag. Like you said, getting them straight from Curse should eliminate any doubt, but I prefer to err on the side of (OCD) caution.

OfflineIf you download from Curse and place directly into your addons folder, you can also spare yourself the trouble of potential naughties that might be running around as well. You are right, .exe's should not be in your folder.
My laptop runs my company. I use many addons. I will *not* heal an ICC run without Healbot. Just won't. Some addons are worth their weight in gold, and as you level, you will find some are pretty darn indispensable.
Or, solve everything and don't run into viruses and loggers to start with. You could always get a Mac. *ducks and runs*

OfflineIt's late here for me and my brain is a vegetable from work, but here is what I can think of right now. Maybe later I can add more after I've gotten some sleep.
(a) First thing that comes to mind is possibly getting yourself a different pet for instances. A bear is a great choice for soloing, but for instances you will see better damage from something like a raptor or a cat.
(b) Since you haven't been playing long, I recommend keeping your pet on passive and sending him out manually. After you've put in a bit more time with grouping and have more experience, switch him to defensive so that he goes out automtically. Although if you do this make sure you keep an eye on where he goes. He may jump on a mob that your tank doesn't want him on because that mob hit you with aoe or something. I run with my pet on defensive, but that is only because I know how to control him from years of experience.

HA! I always *run* after Mac comments, too…
@Takaas:
a) I have a wolf in the stables for when I re/dual spec at 70. I kinda wanna stay BM just because I'm stubborn and like going against the grain, but realistically I suppose I should start getting used to MM as well. I have zero interest in PVP, so if raiding is gonna be my endgame life (or should I say lack of) I might as well start becoming a obsessive DPS whore like everyone else.
b) I suppose that's a good idea. I had him on passive at the beginning, but when I'm AOEing a group of mobs it got annoying having him run back to me every time 1/* was killed. I figured so long as he wasn't on aggressive, I'd be alright. He doesn't leave my side unless I send him out even on defensive, but that's because I stand in the back and wait for a second for the tank to get aggro before sending him in. I suppose a castor could cause me problems on defensive though, never thought about that.
Thanks for the comments. I appreciate it.

OfflineWhen you hit 70, your life gets a bit easier because you get Misdirect http://www.wowhead.com/spell=34477
I use this spell A LOT. This and Feign Death are key abilities you will need to utilize in groups. Hunters are big aggro whores. We generate a lot of it, BUT the two abilities mentioned above make up for it.
You talked about when you see a mob going after the healer or you, what should you do? Myself, I usually have a Freeze Trap tossed out in between the mob and the dps/healers. If it's a mob that can't be trapped, then I usually sick my pet on the mob with his growl switched on or I kite them back to the tank, who hopefully sees it and grabs it. I consider it my job to protect the groups healer. That is at least in pick up groups. If its guildies, I dont worry, we have some awesome tanks. A note though, this sometimes pisses off the tank if your in a pug, I usually let it go in one ear and out the other. I figure if they can't keep control of the mobs, someone has to.

Ah yes, MisD. I've read about it. I've also read how some tanks can get more than a little butt hurt when you use it on them.
I was going to ask about that at some point. The wording on the ability is a little confusing. Do I basically target and shoot MisD at the person I want the threat transferred over to? Is that all it takes, or do I then need to shoot another damaging shot at the mob in question before he goes to whatever I've misdirected onto…? Did that make sense?

OfflineTo use misdirect…..target your tank, cast misdirect, target the mob you want to attack the tank, shoot the mob. You can also misdirect multiple mobs on to the tank by using multi-shot, volley or an explosive trap.
A nifty trick for us MM Hunters for caster mobs. Cast misdirect, shoot the caster mob with silencing shot. It will make the mob run in and melee on the tank for a few hits.
Use misdirect on your pet while soloing and you will rarely pull aggro from him.
Make sure you have the tank targetted when you misdirect. I've accidentally mis-targetted a fellow dpser and misdirected the mob on to them.
10:04 am
Perfect, thanks! I was assuming MisD was a shot. Now that you said "cast" I see why I was confused about what to do.

OfflineHmmm… I use a misdirect macro so that I don't have to loose my target and use my tank as the focus, or my pet if I don't have the focus set. I think Gar has it on the site here. if not, I'll take a peek tonight and try and remember to list it here. It's kinda nice

OfflineOne of the best macro's I use is the instant pet MD.
/focus pet name
/cast [@focus] Misdirection
Just insert your pets name into the first line. This lets you MD right onto your pet easily.
6:04 am
Interesting! So theoretically, if you were in a regular guild with the same people doing runs, you could insert the tanks name in there as well? Either way, pretty cool.
I'm now 40% into lvl 69. My mind is totally burnt, but I should be 70 by tonight. Now I just need a healer to piss me off…
One other thing, I've been doing so many 5 man randoms the past few days, but I still can't seem to get past the nerves. I feel soooo uptight when in a group. I'm more concerned with making a mistake than doing the right amount of damage. I'm totally paranoid about sending off a stray shot that I go as far as to move my cursor off the screen when switching to Viper inbetween pulls. I wait a sec or two before sending in my pet, I hesitate between switching targets, I face the opposite direction when everyone is sitting down to drink just in case my finger targets something. If you saw me, you'd think I was doing brain surgery! I hope that gets better with time.
8:38 am
I cant really see much to add here as these folks all know what they are talking about! One thing I can tell you is, based on what you said in your last post, I can assure 100% that this will pass! Especially after you respec and start learning your final raiding spec, you will fall into a rhythm, you will get comfortable playing YOUR class and the nerves WILL cease! One of the most helpful things I encountered was joining a friendly leveling guild around lvl 76. I didnt know how to use (still not even sure if it was there!) the dungeon finder. I leveled on quests completely until I joined that guild and they started running me through stuff. Knowing they werent going to cuss at me if I made a mistake (and I made many!) I was able to get comfortable with actually being a hunter! When I hit
and started dungeon diving I was confident enough in myself to run with random folks. Having a helpful guild was the best thing that happened to me in those days!
Just remember, shit happens! Mistakes are how we learn… and learning from them now in low lvl dungeons will save you from making them later on in end-game instances!
Good luck!
~Malice
9:22 am
One thing to also keep in mind about the nerves is…right now you are doing content that a lot of people have done a gazillion times. Those people want nothing more than to rush through as soon as possible. What this creates is a sense of hurriedness, and it will take you much longer to learn the ins and outs of each dungeon. Hell, the first time I tanked a Wrath dungeon, I had already gone through all of them (multiple times) with 2 other characters and even then I had no idea what was going on from a tanks perspective. At 69 you are probably seeing Utgarde Keep…ALOT. In time you'll be able to do that zone mostly AFK, with only one eye open, and one hand tied behind your back. At that point you'll look back at these hectic times and wonder what the fuss was all about.
