Hi guys,
Been reading the forums on and off as I've levelled, but this is my first post, so sorry in advance for my first forum post being a request for advice!
I've been levelling a BM hunter for a while now and it all seemed to be going really well. I was doing 3 or 4 dungeons each night and was watching recount – my dps was always in the top one or two, so I can't have been doing too much wrong.
Tonight I dinged 59 and decided to jump in a PuG for the Ramparts. It was a disaster, and my dps/damage done was about 10% – I have never got such abuse from a PuG before. One guy was screaming at me that I needed to learn to play and that I should be aggroing with my pet. It went on for the whole dungeon and has left me totally confused – up until now I've always kept the pet on defensive and pulled it back if it's threatening the tank's aggro. I'm guessing from this response that this is totally worng?
Can anyone advise me on where things have gone so suddenly wrong, and if possible point me in the direction of somewhere I can read up on it? I tried two more dungeons afterwards, and while I didn't get abuse, my dps/damage done was embarassingly low enough for the group to comment on it. I've had a good look at quite a few forums, but no one seems to have covered something as simple as "how to get through a 5 man in outland without making an ass of yourself"!!
My armoury link is here: http://eu.battle.net/wow/en/ch…..l/advanced – any advice/constructive criticism anyone can give would be really appreciated.
Cheers

OfflineI don't play BM spec, so I don't have to many answers in that area. Hopefully one of our BM specialists can give some help there. I can give you some general Hunter advice though.
(1) Unless you are really skilled with controlling your pet, don't run with it on defensive. Keep it on passive and send it out when you start attack a target. I have a macro for mine that when I put a Hunter's Mark on something it runs out to attack that target. This way I never have an "OOPS!" moment with my pet.
(2) Make sure your pet has the "growl" ability turned off. Quite a few noobie Hunters make the mistake of leaving it on. You should only have it on when soloing. If it's still pulling aggro with growl off, then you have a crappy tank.
(3) You have made decent choices in gear, except the "Foe Reaver" sword. Its got strength on it which does nothing for Hunters. Replace the "Barov Servent Caller" trinket as soon as you can as well. Actually try to replace both trinkets, but the Eranikus trinket is an "ok" trinket for now.
(4) I also recommend a change in your professions. Skinning is fine, but you would want to pair it with Leatherworking, which does have some nice Hunter gear and gear enhancements. Engineering/Mining is another good combo.
(5) No matter how good you get as a Hunter, you will always have azzhats that bitch at you for everything. Its their goal in life to make everyone as miserable as they are.

OfflineTak is absolutely right, as long as you do what he's mentioned you'll be fine. Defensive is an okay thing to have your pet on, but really Passive is much better for you controling your pet. I use a really simple macro that sends my pet to attack whatever my focus is set as, the tank, as well as throws up Hunter's Mark and starts my attack. It's really simple and pretty easy to use, so your pet being Passive is never a big deal with this macro.
As Tak said, you'll always run into people being jerks. More than likely you were fine, you're pet just went and started eating somethings face, which happens from time to time…they get hungry, but keeping your pet on passive will save you that hastle. Your dps was down probably because you were so stressed because your group was filled with spruce tags, but as a BM Hunter your primary shot is actually Kill Comman, so you need to be using that as much as you possibly can. A good little rotation I used was the macro I will give you, then Kill Comman, Serpent Sting, Arcane X1 or 2, Steady Shot, Kill Command…etc etc….you want to have enough focus to fire off Kill Command whenever it is available, other than that arcane should be your focus dump, and steady shot to keep your focus up enough. You'll get the hang of it, don't forget to use Bestial Wrath when you can too, don't just save it for bosses, make sure you will have it for boss fights, but don't be afraid to use it on the way to the boss too. Another thing is to use Kill Shot as soon as it comes available, it is a too powerful a shot to just be left in the closet. Doing this should help you out, and like I said, you'll get the hang of it, go practice on a dummy to get your rotation down too, that will help you get comfortable with everything.
Take Tak's advice on the gear too, STR is a doodoo stat for us, AGI is the cat's pajamas. At your level try and get as much hit rating as you can but I wouldn't stress over it too much, just stack AGI to boost your damgae.
Welcome to the lodge, and no question is a bad question, we are here to help and have a great community of people that love to lend a hand!!
Your armory shows you with no glyphs. If that's the case, then you're leaving a bunch of DPS on the table.
Regardless of whether the armory view is bugged and not showing your glyphs, or if you in fact are glyphless… this is what you should have:
Prime:

http://www.wowhead.com/item=42914
Major:
http://www.wowhead.com/item=42902
Your choice for 2nd
Minor:

http://www.wowhead.com/item=43350
Your spec looks fine.
Some of your gear could use replacing right away. You've got some pieces on that are level 35-45ish.
As far as fight mechanics go…
Use Bestial Wrath as often as possible, but don't waste it. Make sure you always have it available for boss encounters, and make sure you can benefit its full duration during trash.
While in Bestial Wrath, your only attacks should be Arcane Shot and Kill Command. If you need focus, pop Fervor or start casting Steadies.
Don't pop Focus Fire while Bestial Wrath is in effect. The added 15% attack speed for your pet is better than the haste benefit you gain during this phase, so wait til after BW wears off before you swallow those Frenzy stacks.
Shot priority is:
- Kill Shot
- Arcane Shot
- Serpent Sting
- Steady Shot
I wouldn't bother with Multi apart from Misdirect pulls with say 4+ mobs.
Try to combine Rapid Fire with Bestial Wrath.
Use a Ferocity pet. Cat, Wolf or Raptor would be best, as all three of them provide DPS buffs. Use the pet which provides the missing buff for your group.
Those things should help. ![]()

OfflineWanted to add one thing, if you're questing in outlands now, you'll be getting a crossbow from a quest reward soon. Use it, I know what you have is a great bow, but you're outgrowing it.
Don't have to be a newb to do number 2 on Tak's list, can't tell you the times my que came through while I was questing and forget to turn growl off, I usually knew it before anyone else, but it's always "OMG I can't believe I did that". LOL

Hmmm… the bow that showed when I inspected their armory was the heirloom one. No need to replace that one.

OfflineThe advice you got here was from some very talented players. I'll toss in my untalented advice only in respect to the advice they've given you. Don't expect it to all come together right away. You're going to make some mistakes before you master the skills and advice and develop overall. Don't sweat the mistakes or the idiots. Many forget they too were once new, well a lot do. It's a game, for some it's their life but it's just a game.
Learn, become proficient and have fun. Contary to what many think becoming decent as a hunter is hard.
Oh yeah, If you've been watching the spiffy recount graph while scrapping, worry about recount after the fight, not while you're in it. G'luck

I saw the old school Ancient Bone Bow, not the heirloom one. Maybe just links got crossed when I looked. Either way, that's a nice one you have equipped now Rebel. Good luck to you!
