Pet talent builds - Builds, Talents and Class Mechanics - Hunter Forums

I really want to understand what I am doing when setting my pet talents and to be honest, I don't. I go for what I think is best to help me…..the hunter…..so I always go for the most stamina, focus and speed…..in the end, I find I am setting pet talents all the same way which has GOT to be wrong. I found talent builds for dps pets / raids here for the wolf, but need to understand how to set talents for tanking pets and my new cata pets especially. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I prefer tanking pets for questing as they keep the bad guys off me and at a distance (as in flamelands dailies)….so I use Terrorpene alot and Sambas I use alot for dailies. I guess what I am asking is which pets do you suggest for what use….ie quests vs raiding vs randoms, and which builds should I use for dps, tanking and cant think….also I am speaking from survival spec (dual to BM)….many thanks and I do love this site with its powerful tools for the hunter! Even before I joined yesterday I have spent many days browsing and taking tips for tames etc…..thanks from your biggest fan…Jazzleigh / Moon Guard / Screaming Bees
Oh yes one other thing on this topic….my nephew always without fails changes all the boxes aboves action bar for pets to the ones that proc from spellbook….so he can use them as needed without opening the book…do you think Blizzard will ever give us more boxes above the action bar for our pets? And what do you feel is the best way to fill them (ie passive, assist, cast web etc) ….hope that makes sense…thanks from Jazzy

OfflineGlad to see you here, Jazzy! Enjoy running with you and all the Bees on MG ![]()
I usually copy pet telent specs from whatever I see suggested here or over at Warcrafthuntersunion.com, specifically on their Hunter Guides page (clicky!) on the right side you'll see Hunter Pet Guides and suggestions for all three specs, Ferocity, Cunning, and Tenacity.
Personally, I like to do my daily questing with Terrorpene- he's my go-to tank pet these days. If I'm out fishing or farming I'll probably have Sambas out or maybe my wolf.
For groups, especially Raids, I use an addon called RaidChecklist that analyzes the classes in your group or raid-group and lets you know which buffs/debuffs are still needed, who can provide them, and which ones you can provide and which pet to use for them. My standard 4 are turtle/wolf/cat/dragonhawk and the 5th spot is usually either a ravager or raptor, but I try to wait and see who all is in the raid and maybe bring something out of the ordinary to cover that one hard-to-get buff/debuff, like maybe from a hyena.
Hope that's all helpful and not just wordy >.< I get wordy sometimes, lol. I'm no expert, I just read a LOT of Huntery stuff.

OfflineHi Jazz,
As usual, I tend to set my pets up a little differently… but remember, I only PvP, and no longer bother with raiding etc…
Cat (Ferocity): I use a cat when I want as much damage as I can generate. I'll run with him/her being slightly nore vulnerable in exchange for sheer ferocity…
Wolf (Ferocity): I give my wolf a little more endurance at the cost of some damage. I usually swap 2 levels of Culling the Herd for one each of Great Stamina and Great Resistance.
Raptor/Devilsaur/Hyena (Ferocity): As we can only use Devilsaur if BM spec, I use either a raptor or hyena as a replacement. I use these pets for Ferocity Tanking. I'll use these guys when expecting single targets or when I feel comfortable with more punch rather than endurance. I'll give these guys another layer of Stamina and Resistance, and Bloodthirsty at the expense of no Culling the Herd and reduced Shark Attack points.
Tank pet (Tenacity): I like Boars or Bears myself, but each to their own. I build them tough rather than rough. I max out their stamina, armor, resistance. I envisage doing the damage, all I want these guys for is to hold agro. Culling the Herd and Serpent Swiftness is usually dropped to fit the endurance points in.
Cunning pet: My BM usually has a chimera when I need chasing/slowing down or I use a Bat if not BM for the stuns.
As I PvP, I increase stamina and resistance by (2/3) and at the expense of Culling the Herd and if not BM I only take 1/2 of Feeding Frenzy.
I'm sure many will disagree, but this seems to work for me.
Remember it costs nothing to respec your pet, so experiment. You can even have 2 or 3 of the same pet class all set up differently if you like… done that before!
Cheers,
D

OfflineUsually which pets i use for raiding (i raid surv too) are:
Cat: I use cat when we dont have a pally with BoM, and for max out deeps.
Wolf: I use wolf when we dont have a dk/warrior with Abominations Might/Rampage.
Raptor: i use raptor only in situations where tanks/rogues aren't lowering the bosses armor.
those are the pets i usually use, its not a wide variety not like other hunters here at this website but im still able to pulll of a decent 20k+ during raids.
When i was BM, i used Kurken as my main pet
, ferocity pet but i fully speced him out in defense. (dont do that, even tho core hounds are awsome tanks)
for questing/randoms just use cat, randoms dont really require for u to use more than the cat.

OfflineJazzy, I second what Ozzy suggested and look to what the other hunters are bringing. Fortunately, since we are a hunterific guild, it's often easy to just eyeball the beasts and bring out something that is not already out and that suits the spec you are running in for the night.
Lately however, during 25 manners, that the buffs are well covered, so what I focus on is the easiest skin to spot in the crowd for me, like my Winterspring cat, Purr. ![]()

OfflineNot really a pet talent build note but Niika's post reminded me of something I ran into one day. People for some reason dont appreciate if you bring a pet that has the skin type of something you will face in an instance. My example is when running Zul'aman I had my lynx (cat) with and he looks just like the cats you face in there.

OfflineDefinitely an issue for some people!! I've had mild complaints about having a red hued pet in FL where everything is, well, on fire! Was told it made it tough to see some of the mobs.
The awesome Pet Flow Chart that's available out there (sorry, don't have a link right now) says it wonderfully, for those times (like a 25) where all buffs are covered, "Bring whatever pet looks the best!" ![]()
