I feel stupid posting this, but I need help badly. My DPS is horrible and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. :/
I've been playing WoW casually for a couple years now and got my main toon up to
only about a month before the shattering hit. I achieved this by solo questing almost exclusively, with 5-man dungeons thrown in here and there if I wanted something exciting to do. I killed things just fine, didn't die very often, and thought myself to be a pretty decent player.
Then I dinged
, and started running with all the other level
's…and realized that I was really, really far behind. I got caught up doing all the shiny new stuff in Cata and recently hit 84 thanks to the new quests, but now that some of the initial excitement has worn off I have time to focus on making my toon less fail-y. I've been trying to take in everything I need to know to make my toon better, but there's so much information out there and I'm feeling pretty overwealmed right now.
Anywho…here's my main. http://us.battle.net/wow/en/ch…..rnu/simple
I know that BM tends to have lower DPS than SV or MM, and I'm ok with that, but I know there's a lot I can do to get better DPS going. I've been told that my gear sucks, but now that Cata hit pretty much everyone's gear sucks and I'm working on replacing mine as fast as I can. Haven't gemmed yet because I've been upgrading stuff so often that gemming seems like a waste of money.
I've been playing around with reforging, but I'm below the 8% hit cap and even after reforging like half of my gear in favor of hit rating, I'm still below the cap and don't have anything left to put into Agility or Mastery. Should I just push for the cap? Why am I so far below it when other people talk about hitting the cap and reforging the extra into other things? I have no extra left.
Stupidest question of this post: How do I find out my exact DPS? The ranged DPS in my character tab claims to be only around 1000, but I'm sure I do twice that with just auto-shot, and more if I'm actually pushing buttons. I don't know if I'm just reading it wrong or what. :/
I need soooo much advice. Help?
Edit: Confirmed that autoshot does 2k damage alone, twice what my DPS claims to be. Also…where does Cobra Shot fit into rotation? It seems to be the same as Steady Shot, except with the added bonus of keeping Serpent Sting active constantly. Should I swap out Steady for Cobra?

OfflineWow, well first off, take a deep breath….and release, you're going to be fine, and are in the right place my friend. First off, welcome to the Lodge! Feel free to browse around some of the other forum topics, or hit up Gar's guides and such, a lot of the information that you are looking for can be found on the site, but we can help get you going at least.
Right now, you've got a great looking build, and your gear seems to be pretty solid as well. However, what I think may be the issue is just that doing damage while you're out questing and soloing can be quite different when you run randoms with a group. You really have to get a good rotation down, which is what I think you're asking. Getting a solid rotation down will greatly improve your dps.
I'm a BM (BadMofo as we like to say) and don't let the pretty boy marksman and survivalists tell you they're better, they may be a couple points better, but personally I always out do the ones that I run with, so…,
First off, Kill Command should be your top priority and you should fire that off whenever you can, it's our bread and butter ability. I send my pet in to attack, start my auto attack, and set H.Mark, then the first thing I do is hit Kill Command, Serpent Sting, Steady Shot, Arcane Shot, and by that time usually Kill Command is back up for me. I pretty much just rinse and repeat that procedure. However, now with Cobra Shot, I put that where the first Steady SHot is in the line above, The main thing is to keep up enough focus to fire Kill Command whenever you can, and fire off your Kill Shot as soon as that's available too.
This will at least help you get going, and hopefully give you a place to start, but mess around with it and see what works for you. Get yourself the addon Recount if you haven't already, it keeps track of your dps for you, almost a must have for the dps classes. Grab Recount, and then go and practice on a training dummy to get your rotation solidified too, that helps a lot. You'll get there, again you're in the right place, so welcome and browse around for some good tips!

I wasn't using Kill Command as much as I should have been, I think that was a big part of it. I've redone the order of the spells on my action bar and have been practicing on dummies to get used to the rotation and it seems to be working better. I still don't feel quite up to par, seeing people talk about hitting 10k on a single target, but I'm doing better.
I've been spending a lot of time on the site, much love to Gar for making such a fantastic hunter resource. I'll go download Recount to get some solid numbers and go from there. Thanks for the help and the welcome. ^_^

OfflineGreat! You are well on your way then. Right now, I consider myself to be doing pretty significant damage in dungeon runs. I'm lvl 83 right now, and you can see my gear by clicking on my link below. Those who are talking about 10k, are crazy and have probably been raiding as well as doing randoms. I average around 5k per dungeon run for overall damage, and can get up to 6k when fighting the bosses, and I've always been at the top of my group…so either they're lying to you, or reminiscing about their glory days in Northrend where that was totally possible, and it will be again, but not at level
running through Cata, at least it won't be common and will usually be the exception.
Happy Hunting!

OfflineI haven't been playing my hunter lately, but I have been playing with a lot of hunters and there really aren't that many that are breaking 10k dps unless they are already running heroics. All you need is practice and rotation. Everyone will be worrying about gear later. You can find out your exact DPS from an add-on called recount. If you aren't running with any add-ons right now head to http://www.curse.com and check them out. They make everything much more efficient.
Another tip, make sure you update and use macros. The BM hunter in my guild wanted to do things the "old fashioned way" without using macros his DPS dropped a bit because of it.

Thanks for the advice guys. ![]()
I redid my shot rotation and reforged my gear so that I'm almost at the all-important hit cap. (It was just a tad under 7% when I logged off last night, though the Armory is showing 1% lower. Guess it hasn't updated yet.) I also downloaded Recount to keep track of the damage I'm doing.
I'm still only topping out at about 3k though. Looking at your armory page, Drach, the numbers seem to be misleading…my damage, DPS, and attack power stats are higher than yours, but in-game I'm only doing half as much damage as you are. :/ I've been working with training dummies, dunno if the numbers would be better on actual mobs or a boss. I'll go queue for a random after this post.
My shot rotation starts with my GO! macro that casts Hunter's Mark and sends my pet in to attack. Then I fire off Serpent Sting, making sure to keep it active at all times. Third is Kill Command, which is used again every time it comes off cooldown. Spam Arcane Shot in the meantime when energy is high, Steady/Cobra Shot when energy is low. Kill Shot when the enemy's health gets low enough.
I'll go reread the Macro page here, I read it pre-
but I need to look over it again.
I just really want to hit at least 4-5k DPS. I was in a random the other day and somebody made a comment about "the 2.5k DPS huntard"…kinda got under my skin.
Oh, and I'm pretty hellbent on sticking with BM.
I've used it almost exclusively since I started the game years ago, I insist on the ability to be able to have exotics (devilsaur FTW!), and it's just what I'm most comfortable with. I'm dual specced in SV, but I have a hard enough time getting good DPS on the spec I'm used to…seems like switching to something new might be counterproductive at this point.

OfflineAre you optimizing your cooldown usage? What kind of pet are you using? Also, don't bother with steady as BM, you get more benefit from Cobra as there are no talents in BM that prefer Steady over Cobra, and Cobra ignores armour and increases the duration of your serpent sting, rendering the need to monitor serpent sting closely a thing of the past.
An example priority rotation after getting HM and Sting up would look something like:
- Kill Command
- Arcane
- Cobra Shot
You should be using Bestial Wrath on cooldown, with the first BW combined with Call of the Wild and Rapid Fire at the start of the fight after the tank has established agro, or you could save them for the burn phase, either way you want BW to rarely be off cooldown unless you know the cooldown won't be up in time to use it with your other cooldowns.
3:28 pm
Finally ran some dungeons and managed to get in the top two or three DPS each time, which definitely an improvement. I'm used to chilling towards the bottom of the list with the healer, haha.
Guess I just needed to get used to the new rotation and all that.
I got rid of Steady Shot altogether. I used to use Bestial Wrath on bosses but not so much on mobs, though I used it a ton on my randoms last night and will continue to do so since I need every last drop of DPS I can get.
I use a cat or devilsaur in dungeons. I know wolves are the most used (and probably "best") pet, but I'm partial to kitties and dinos. I have ol' Ironjaw sitting in my stable and I can start using him if it would make a difference, but I think devilsaurs are at least as good as wolves.
Thank you soooo much for the help everyone. <3 I'm doing a lot more DPS than I was just a few days ago and finally feel confident enough to run with the other
+ toons.

OfflineMagoo- I've never been a BG'er, so I can't help you out much. I know Gar PvP's alot and enjoys the BM spec for all of that stuff too, so I would say based on what I've read and understand, BM is a very viable spec to do that stuff in.
Tais- Use it as often as you can my man, it's allright to save up for boss fights, but really if you have it glyphed it's a one minute cooldown, so odds are it will be up for boss fights. I got used to saving it up for bosses, but lately I've been realizing just how quick the cooldown is, and use it every chance I get, even during the group trash fights on the way to the boss. So short answer: yes, use it as often as you can!
