My DPS Still Suks - Builds, Talents and Class Mechanics - Hunter Forums

I've been doing that a lot lately.  I do more then 6k dps generally but not a whole lot more and with really crappy gear.  My main currently is a Shaman but will be switching to BM hunter come cata with guilds approval.  Which is why I'm working on this character atm.

Build wise it's a carbon copy for the PvP spec main and PvE off specs found in the guide on this website.  Infact I pretty much learned almost everything about playing the hunter from the guides on this website.

Differences between our gear it looks like you out gear me by quite a bit.  Several pieces of gear that I use are from PvP spec.  What does PvP gear give you?  AP, AGI, STA.  What are our best dps stats?  Yup you guessed it.  You trade out for the optional 3rd stat for resiliance which while being a wasted stat for things like armor pen that doen't boost your pet.  I'm not seeing a while lot of difference.  Is PvE a hell of a lot better of course!  But when your trying to fill in gaps of 187-226 gear you can't go wrong throwing a 264 PvP item in there till you get a PvE version.

Also while some people have trivilized it, I have found it to make a much more siginificant impact, the use of Attack Power instead of agility gems.  My pet is doing 40% of my total dps.  Your pet can move and attack.  If you are in a LK fight or any of the other ICC fights being able to move and be effective is a must.  If I'm running around getting out of the way of something I still have 30-40% of my DPS going.  But I'd think about regemin and chanting to Attack Power if you can afford it.  The other thing is when the new patch comes out Agi will do 2 Attack power per 1 Agi so then it won't matter.  But that is when 4.X comes out if you want dps now that's how you do it.  When the patch comes out all your Attack power gems all get converted back to agi anyways.

As far as rototation it may not be optimal but I do it very very very simple.  I have a hunters mark pet attack macro.  That goes on the target first.  I use button timers so that will show a time bar if my mark and DoT is up on the current target.  I start on the left and go to the right.  So after the hunters mark comes Serpent Sting.  As long as those two bars are on the target I'm set to go to Arcane shot next.  Arcane shot I have setup as a cool down timer.  So when the bar disapears from arcane shot I know to hit that again so it is always on cool down.  Then I just hold down the spam key for steady shot the rest of the time.  That's the rotation.

Now additional to the above I have a macro setup that clicks kill command, BW, Rapid Fire, all my trinkit clickies etc.  One press of that and everything goes off.  I have a 2nd button timer bard with all the functions that I put on that one key up there with their cool down timers displayed.  When I start on a boss rotation I put the Mark up and then I instantly hit that super dps macro.  then continue with the rotation described above.  Whenever one of the clickies comes off cooldown I instantly click that super do everything macro and hits whatever special ability has come down off of cool down with just one button.

This is probably not the best way to do things but it keeps everything on cool down and all my abilities up the maximum possible time.  My dps I'm really shocked and happy with at the gear level I'm at.  I love out dpsing better geared hunters while sporting the lowest dps spec, with lessor PvE, and some mixed in PvP gear.  After they rip me a new one for showing up to the raid I enjoy returning the favor going okay so my gear and spec sucks what's your excuse?

With PvP gear your wasting a stat by having resilience. Things such as ArP, while not boosting your pets damage, does boost yours. Yes, a BMs primary damage is their pet, the Hunter themself also needs to be doing damage. As far as the gear level thing goes, it isn't always better to go with the higher level gear score item. While some may "Ooo!" and "Ahh!" over a high gear score, improper gear choice will bring your dps down.

Example: I have  http://www.wowhead.com/item=54566 sitting in the bank collecting dust right now. Does it lower my gear score, oh yeah, BUT my dps is up there with the rest of the Hunters in my group.

Agree 100% even mentioned resilance as a wasted stat.  But you have a few choices.  If you have lower level items 219 or below you can get 264 PvP items that will have more AGI, AP, Crit then what you currently have using PvP gear (ONLY IF REGULAR STATS ARE BETTER) is definitly a viable option to increase your DPS in the short term until you get those raid drops.  But yes ohh heck yes a 264 PvE drop will always be better then a PvP one for PvE content.

Or your other option is to just wear sub par gear until you get better items via raid drops.  Me personally, I like walking in to a raid with the best stats I can possibly have through the gear I can get on my own or with 5 man groups.  Then replace those items with PvE upgrades as I get them.

I don't recall ever saying someone told me what my dps was.  Please quote if you like.  But anyways I always run with recount and after becoming a BM hunter yes having pets separated from players becomes more of a consern.  Never had that selected till I got the BM to .  With only have 2pc T9 one of my recent raids was

Again nothing great over all but not too shabby with the gear available.  It'll only get better as gear improves.  2pcT10 will be a huge increase etc.

Someone else corrent me if I'm wrong, but I think it's pretty much the consensus that AP gems are best suited for BM hunters over AGI. However, and I don't know how important this is to you, but come 4.0 AP is going bye-bye, so you might as well stay with AGI gems at this point. It's my guess that AP gems will convert into AGI, anyway come Cat.
