My current talent build: could my DPS be even better?

Good day, everyone! I am just now finally getting around to creating my first post on this forum, since registering last year in August. My main character in WoW is Mairna, a level 85 Dwarf Hunter on Sisters Of Elune (US) realm. Mairna's character information can be viewed at:

http://us.battle.net/wow/en/ch…..rna/simple

Please allow me this opportunity to ask for some advice pertaining to my current talent build. I am currently a Survival hunter. To be honest, I am fairly certain that I have tried over 50 different talent builds! I have only very recently grown to love Survival as a primary spec. At first, I found it very confusing, what with all the traps and everything. However, now I am finally wrapping my mind around the concept and the shot rotation, and I am very impressed with the results.

I am currently cutting my teeth on 5-Man Cataclysm Heroics, and gearing up like mad, re-gemming, re-enchanting, etc. I recently made a few subtle adjustments to my Survival spec, and I am currently doing approximately 11k – 14k DPS in 5-Man Cataclysm dungeons, both Normal and Heroic. This is by far the best DPS that my hunter has ever managed to put out so far. I am somewhat uncertain if this is good DPS for Cataclysm 5-Mans – is it just average or very good? Adding to this uncertainty is a recent random Heroic Tol-Vir run I did. There was a certain hunter by the name of Ifrius who amazed me by putting out no less than 26k DPS !!! I believe he was in full raid gear – all epic ilevel 359's, though I did not get the chance to fully inspect him. I would absolutely love to be doing that kind of damage!

My current talent build is as follows:

Beast
Mastery (1 point)

One with Nature
- Rank 1/3

Marksmanship (7 Points)

Efficiency
- Rank 3/3

Rapid Killing – Rank 2/2

Careful Aim – Rank 2/2

Survival (33 Points)

Hunter vs. Wild
- Rank 3/3

Pathing – Rank
3/3

Improved Serpent Sting – Rank 2/2

Trap Mastery – Rank 3/3

Thrill of the Hunt – Rank 3/3

Lock and Load – Rank 2/2

Resourcefulness – Rank 3/3

T.N.T. – Rank 2/2

Toxicology – Rank 2/2

Wyvern Sting – Rank 1/1

Noxious Stings
- Rank 2/2

Hunting Party – Rank 1/1

Sniper Training
- Rank 3/

Serpent Spread – Rank 2/2

Black Arrow
- Rank 1/1

For primary Glyphs, I am currently using Kill Shot, Serpent Sting, and Explosive Shot. I would very much appreciate any advice, suggestions, or comments concerning my current build, optimal shot rotations, or anything else that you believe would be helpful to me in imrpoving my DPS output even further. Thank you very much for your time and attention to this matter. I look forward to your helpful replies.

Here is a good write up from over at Elitist Jerks. It tells you pretty much everything you would need to know to improve your dps.

My recommendations….

(1) Ditch the PvP gear asap. Reilience does nothing for you in PvE.

(2) Level your professions up all the way. I see you have Blacksmithing which means you can get extra gem slots on your gear, which in turn means a boost to your damage.

Other then tweaking your talents a bit and getting rid of the PvP gear, you've been making good choices on things and are heading down the right path. I'm sure our SV Hunters here will have more to add.

Welcome to the forums Mairna!

Here is the build I suggest: http://www.wowhead.com/talent#…..rRsk:RsmV0

One With Nature is now giving us an additional 200AP per point, so I highly recommend filling that out.

Rapid Killing is fairly useless because you have to be the one who lands the killing blow, not to mention it won't help you at all during many boss encounters. You can drop these points and put them in OWN.

Drop 2 points from Hunter vs. Wild and put them in Go for the Throat. GftT is probably the best-bang-for-the-buck talent in any of the hunter talent trees. It's a tier 1 talent that only costs 2 points, but provides a considerable boost to DPS. The extra health from HvW isn't going to boost your damage any. ;-)

Personally, I like Survival Tactics because it gives your Disengage a bit shorter cooldown, plus it decreases trap resists. The trap resist is marginally helpful, but when combined with the glyph, the short Disengage CD is quite helpful. Disengage is a great tool for positioning while in dungeons, raids, etc… Faster movement and better positioning means more DPS.

If you drop the point in HvW and one point from Serpent Spread, you can go 2/2 Survival Tactics. The extra 3 seconds doesn't seem worth it to me, especially since a lot of times the mobs will be dead within 6 seconds (1/2).

If you go that route, I'd suggest replacing one of your majors with Glyph of Disengage.

As far as your gear goes… I suggest replacing that Heart of Solace with a new trinket asap. Since the proc does nothing for you, it's less valuable than a few of the green quest reward trinkets I still have in my bags – one of which I'm still using! Strength is not a good stat for hunters.

Go for the 54 agility/3% increased crit meta in your helm.

Hope that helps. icon_smile
