I've been taking a break from Wow and now i've returned. I lefted as MM and I'm still MM. I have seen that more and more is changing back to Surv and i was wondering is that the best spec now?
i know it depends on your gear. But lets say that you got the best gear you could get for each spec. which would be the best then?
Hoping to get some replies ![]()

OfflineSV is putting out the best all around dps. MM doesnt jump to the lead until you get the more top end gear that puts their armor penetration above 700 or so. At least that's what a lot of players are saying.
In my book it's the player behind the Hunter. I'm in a raid where we have all three Hunter specs. We run pretty close to neck and neck in dps. The only one beating us out being a Ret Pallie.
My advice, play which spec you have fun with. I enjoy MM and all the different shots it has. I've been told by several people (not my fellow raiders) that I don't have the appropriate level of armor penetration to raid as MM. 10 man ICC, I average around 6500 dps and have hit almost 7k on some fights.

OfflineAgro, honestly if you have that much ArP you should be able to switch to MM if that's what you want. I don't even have that much ArP and I play MM and do better than any SV hunter or RET Pally that we bring on any run. So really it's like Takaas said, play what you like and are comfortable with.
@Takaas, I tried looking you up to see how muc ArP you have, but I believe at the moment you are in PVP gear if I looked up the right you (The White Oath?). but I run with 543 ArP and nothing that can proc for more. I use the agility food and endless rage flask. I didn't start running MM with nearly that much, more like 300ish, so if you have 500ish or even a little less I would say you could run MM just fine. And either way, if you enjoy MM, tell those other people to shove off. just my opinion.
However, I would like to hear that you push more like 8k on average in 10man ICC and that you beat out the RET in your runs, but I don't know what your raiding gear is like so I can't say one way or the other if we could tweak it

OfflineYeah, I pvp a bit and log out often in my pvp gear, so looking up my armory isn't always useful. The Ret Pallie has pretty much any gear upgrades that drop in the run, so he outgears us a bit. I'm a more recent recruit in the raid and still gearing up, so I will most likely catch up when I get geared up better. I'm hoping for the dang bow to drop some day soon.

OfflineOh yea, that bow up'd me by about 500 DPS alone. so definitely grab that when you can. I'm sure your gear is fine and your ArP level is good too. I just want you to know that when I switched at about 300ish ArP I dropped arcane shot at that time and the talents for improved arcane out of my rotation and spec. I think it all depends on what works for you because I was playing SV before I switched of course and immediately saw an up in DPS when I did change. not huge of course, but still an increase…

Offlinetak, i like it when you log out in your pvp gear; I'm in the process of pulling together a set. Adore PVP. just adore it.
Aggro, I agree, I think if you play what feels most comfortable for you, you will do better, personally. Some can mind bend around SV better, others can do MM in their sleep. it's all what works for you. Give both a try, or if you have dual talent specialization, you can try both in the same run. Just remember that all boss fights are not created equal.

I've used to be SV back in Ulduar times and that worked for me. But almost every item have arp on it so it seems that mm would be the best spec cuz of that.
i have gemmed arp in all my gems (almost), it might be the reason for my
0 arp ![]()
and I'm pretty sure that i will do alot less dps as SV in that gear. or what?

OfflineWell if you were to switch to an SV spec the way your gear is currently gemmed up, yes you would probably do a lot less DPS than you would in an MM spec. SV all ready falls behind MM at equally itemized end level gear and on top of that ArP does almost nothing for SV as compared to what it does for MM. Now if you were to regem for mostly Agility or Agility/Crit I think you would notice a rise in DPS in the SV spec while not noticing nearly as much of drop as you would think in the MM spec.
Just some food for thought, but how often do you have to move or shoot on the move when you raid currently? ArP doesn't affect any of our instant shots in either spec…

OfflineWell you have a couple of pieces of pvp gear, your hit is well below the needed 8%, your stamina and intellect are basically equal, and you're in a 53/18 spec at the moment. Because of all that, I have to assume you're in a PVP set up so I'd have to see you in your PVE set up to really make any suggestions. Although, I will make an observation on what I'm assuming is your raiding spec of 5/59/7. If you have 263 hit or more without the talents you've placed in Focused Aim, I would drop them into something more beneficial. My suggestion would be two points in the BM tree in Focused Fire for sure and then your last point is kind of a floater, I prefer putting my last point in Improved Hunter's Mark, but you could leave one point in Focused Aim if you feel the pushback reduction is helpful. I would also suggest changing the Aimed Shot glyph to the Serpent Sting Glyph. Just my suggestions, if your spec works for you, then go with what works…

Aimed Shot is pure physical damage. I was thinking the initial hit of Chimera was as well, but I need to check that out. The tooltip states a base 125% weapon damage, plus the nature damage from the sting.
I hadn't really thought to check that, but I shall do so this evening.
But yea… armor pen is really only a plus if you are MM, have a decent amount of it, and are good with timing your auto-shots and managing movement.

Offline@Gar, thanks for the clarification on Aimed Shot and Chimera Shot. I hadn't really thought about the fact that it was physical damage, I was just thinking about how from what I had read ArP affected mostly Auto Shot and I assumed it affected Steady Shot as well since that was physical damage (should have put two and two together there
). Both of which I knew you couldn't be moving to perform.
I do know I read a nice article here about the difference between gemming agility and ArP. There's another article from the same site here, it's a little more in depth, but still good. I also know that I personally had less ArP then most people when I switched to MM, about 300ish, and now I only have 543 and do just fine DPS wise. I never gemmed for ArP at all, just agility, agility/crit, and the 10 stats meta. I do more DPS than I would in SV, but I'm also set up to switch to SV whenever needed for the raid composition.
Agro, tried to look you up on wowheroes as well, still in your pvp gear

OfflineI see crits like that too
I'm sitting just at or just under 60% crit. It's been a few weeks since I've been able to play so I don't have the recount meters of anything recent in front of me, but the last time I raided I'm pretty sure my Chimera's were critting around there and I know I saw a couple Kill Shots run in at the 30K mark. I think I'm hitting between 25k and 30k pretty regularly with my KS now.
I suppose I could make the jump to the ArP gems, but honestly I like being able to switch back and forth between MM and SV whenever I feel like it. And I don't think it would be worth all the money to change 14 gems from agility to ArP when I'll only net a 31.57 DPS increase in optimal conditions for an ArP build. That's just my thoughts though, it always amounts to what you are comfortable with and enjoy.
Helz,
You're correct in that Armor Pen benefits auto-shot and Steadies mostly. I was just throwing that out there. I still need to test the Chimera Shot physical damage quotient.
Anyone for sure whether or not the physical portion of Chimera is buffed by armor pen? Been a little busy, so I've not had a chance to log in to test this.

Hi guys, this is Tonic.
Gar, great website!
I am really struggling with the Surv/MM question. Like the OP, I took a break before WotLK and have now been
for about 4 or 5 weeks and my gear has gotten fairly good.
I'm at the point (I think) where I might want to go MM to see a DPS increase. I have been doing a lot of reading here and outdps and ej and I am not quite sure what the current information is. With all the changes that wow implements it is tough to figure out if what I am reading is actually current. In any case I had a guy in a pug tell me I should go MM. Our 25 mans have about 3 other hunters, all MM and, frankly, I'm usually top hunter on the meters as the only Surv. But that might be because of other factors and not spec is what I'm thinking.
So I'm looking for help.

Armory link.
The off spec is for my arena teams or I would use it to try out MM in a raid.
Any advice would be appreciated, I'm just not sure where to go from here. Do I go MM and learn a new rotation? Do I go after ArP gear? Do I regem ArP? From what I have read I'm leaning toward spec'ing MM but I do like survival, 74% crit raid buffed
.
