I have a very competitive guild member, who is geared a bit higher than me.  He LOVES stating that he's higher in DPS in guild on some fights (usually on trash mobs, etc), however, I'm consistently above his numbers on overall damage.

I don't particularly care about the competition (I'm the guild leader, everyone loves to compete with me, and it makes for fun conversation and guildies wanting to perform better personally) but it got me thinking which is the more important stat – overall damage in a fight, or the rate of DPS?

Q)  What would be the difference between 10K DPS and dead in 10 seconds and 6 to 7K sustained DPS throughout the entire fight and killing the boss?

A)  A dead mage and a hunter who lived the whole fight Smile

Personnaly I track Damage first with DPS secondary on my recount.  That's my preference anyways.  However, I have a guild member that's better geared than me and does slightly more DPS than I do, the nice thing is that he's always commenting on how I out damage him…so…

And trash doesn't really count in most circumstances.

rofl I love that argument, Helz.  He's a spriest, close call.  We are usually both alive at the end of the fights, and our DPS is usually different by about 40,000, but our damage is pretty different.  Yeah, I know that trash doesn't really count, and smile knowing that he's alive to kill while i'm getting the blood beasts off, or the spinning globes, or glowing poo, etc.

I just want to be able to explain both (and why both are tracked) so that I can better educate others, ya know?

Yea that makes since.  I think if I understand correctly DPS is important because there are some fights where you have to a certain amount of DPS to actually beat a boss due to enrage timers and such.  But on the same token damage is equally important because it shows how you are playing your class a little more accurately at times.  sometimes DPS numbers can be quirky due to what's affecting them…things like game induced buffs or doing a ton of damage and then dying.  I know there's another specific reason to track damage but I can't really think of why at the moment…

you know, come to think of it, I was running with a spriest and was noticing some very nice numbers from him and wondering wth is he doing…lol!

I was concerned about my dps level in the 10 man ICC raid that I run in. I asked my raid leader about it and he said, "Your dps level is good enough for this raid, you shouldn't be overly concerned with it. I don't bring you on this raid because you can top the dps meters, I bring you with because you know your class and I can depend upon you when things go wrong. I know that you will watch our back with doing misdirects, kiting stuff when needed and trapping a mob that might stray. You also adapt well, if you make a mistake you won't make it a second time. I would rather have someone like that, then someone that can put out 10k dps and is the first to die in a fight because they pulled aggro."

Yea, there's that too.  As a hunter we're the most reliable source of kiting amongst other things such as misdirecting and distracting.  Or even keeping a healer alive when needed.

I completely agree, Taak, and often hear that that is a hunter's role in the raid.  Great raid leader you have there, by the way. icon_biggrin

I think I am just trying to learn why both overall damage as well as overall DPS is tracked, and have this wonderful clip from within this link from another forum:

"Depends on what you are looking for, high DPS means you were able to cause high amount of damage in a short amount of time. This can be absolutely crucial in some fights.

High total damage done means you were focused throughout the raid.

A mage or any class for that matter, can actually boost dps by staying out of all single target fights, and only join the fun for AoE, makes for massive epeen, but does not really help the raid. "  Hounddog, from Runetotem

The link is here, for the full discussion: http://forums.wow-europe.com/t…..&sid=1

I'm still searching the mechanics of both statistics.  Its interesting.
