Leveling build and shot rotation questions

Ok I was doing a bit of reading.  Thanks to everyone for all the help so far.

This build was found in a leveling guide I found recommended for icon_eek-85 hunters.

-to-85/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">http://wow.joystiq.com/2010/11…..-icon_eek-to-85/

It appears to leave out a few things that on first glance appear to be important.

First of all 0 points in Imp Steady Shot

Secondly  0 points in termination.

From this I'm left to imply that for a leveling rotation hes saying SS is not a staple of the rotation.

Next the article puts 2 points in bombardment implying that Multi Shot is going to be used.  I recall that previously unless multi targets MS was a waste of mana ( focus )

Lastly Im not familiar with the focus dump so if someone could explain this quote a bit clearer that would rock.

Unfortunately our auto-shot will not fire while we’re casting Aimed Shot (it will fire during Steady Shot casts) and furthermore once Aimed Shot fires it resets our auto-shot timer, so we have to wait the entire duration of the timer before an auto-shot fires. So by hardcasting Aimed Shot (meaning using the 2.9-second cast version, rather than the instant proc version) we’re firing far fewer shots. Not only are we losing auto-shots, but we’re also losing a lot of Wild Quiver procs because of those fewer shots.

Technically, despite all of this loss, using Aimed Shot as our focus dump instead of Arcane Shot will still yield higher dps.

In this Im not sure what they mean by the instant cast version as well as the focus dump.

Cheers

Mike

Sorry quick edit to my post.

Why is haste not so good for MM hunters and is Ar Pen still good?

(1) First off it's a "leveling" spec, not a "dps" spec. You aren't going to want to use this spec for raiding. Further in the article they pretty much mention this point.

When soloing you aren't going to need the haste buff from Improved Steady talent.

The combination of Recupertaion and Rapid Killing will fill your focus needs.

Your targets are going to die quickly, so Termanation isnt really needed either.

(2) MM Hunters have the talent http://www.wowhead.com/spell=34487  When this procs you get to fire off a "free" aimed shot, meaning it doesn't have its usual 2.4 second cast time.

(3) Armor Penetration no longer exists as a stat in the game.

I read that and that makes sense. What exactly is a focus dump?

I'm a bit disappointed about Ar Pen though I kinda liked that.

One further question with this.

If haste isn't that useful and were taking frenzy over the true 1 haste boost from surv tree why not take another point out of there and take focus fire? If were bumping up out pet frenzy anyway why not use this to regen focus?

MM regenerates focus through Steady Shots. If using a good rotation MM rarely has any focus issues. Focus Fire would mostly be a waste of talent points. You would only get the haste bonus when Focus Fire is up instead of more permanent bonus from Pathing.

Basically for MM Hunters we don't want to gem or enchant haste because of our abilities to regen focus at a good rate. When dpsing we are constantly using steady shots in our rotations. If using a solo spec like the one mentioned before, the combination of rapid fire and recuperate keeps our focus bar filled.

I know it is sort of implied, but just as a direct answer to the question: What is "focus dump"?

Let's assume that your normal shot rotation/priority leaves you focus-positive, meaning that if you only use that rotation/priority you will reach maximum focus for short periods of time while waiting to fire off your next shot. For these short periods, your focus regeneration is effectively switched off. Over the full duration of a fight, that can add up to a lot of lost focus.

Whilst focus starvation is (I believe) the biggest DPS killer for novice hunters, maxing out focus is also a waste of potential extra damaging shots (and procs).

So you add into your rotation, when needed, an instant cast shot which makes the best and fastest possible use of the extra focus not needed by your main rotation/priority, and keeps your focus regeneration going flat out 100% of the time. This is your "focus dump" shot.

Nice explanation! I was looking around all over for some kind of definition for focus dump. Thank you Felinin!
