Howdy folks, just wanted to get everyone's take on a subject I have been dealing with since I got to lvl icon_eek…dps, delicate cardinal rubies (+20agi) vs. Fractured Cardinal Rubies (+20armpen)  first, I encourage everyone to check out my character at the armory,

http://www.wowarmory.com/chara…..Hawkthorne

Now, whats been happening to me lately is that I do raids, and either I get booted for low dps, or I get out dpsed by other hunters.  I'll try to pick their brains a little just to find out what I am doing wrong, and its the same answer every time, I need to swap out my agility gems for arm pen, and focus on steady shot in my shot rotation.  I have imported my character into femaledwarf.com and when I swap out the gems the dps doesn't change that much.  Right now, with my Delicate Cardinal Rubies, I'm averaging around 4400-5000 dps at the target dummy's according to recount.  but with fd.com its saying that if I swap out delicates for Fractured the dps won't really change that much…  I've messed out with shot rotation, and still not much difference.  At this point I question my own sanity, I don't know up for down.  Help!

Gear and gems look ok on you armory. Replace Hunter's Mark glyph with Serpent Sting one. What kind of rotation do you use?

Hey Hawk, looking at your armory, you're well over the hit cap. You should replace the Mark of Supremecy as soon as possible. either replace it with the War Token that you get from frost badges or if you're lucky with drops something there. you could even go old school and get a mirror of truth or a greatness card and you would probably see benefits as well.

I also noticed that neither of your professions are really leveled. If you have the ability to power level a profession, I would suggest that you drop blacksmithing for either Jewelcrafting or Enchanting. Then max that baby out and use the rewards for yourself.

my internet is being too slow to check your spec at the moment, but I'll try to look later tonight.

Grrrr… "Arpen is the answer" is tossed around like candy, and is truly a solution for many classes, however, a good high-level hunter (not just end-game gear, but end-game dps) will tell you that arpen on a hunter is a tiered solution, morseso than it is for warriors and rogues and other classes.  Send them the link to Gar's Guides if they wish to argue with you at all.  Your armor penetration is at 341 at the moment.  You are at a point to consider dropping Arcane Shot from your basic rotation, but not near the 700-icon_eek0is arpen level to consider gemming for it.

I noticed a dps increase by moving your yellow socketed gems to Deadly Ametrine, and moving your +10 All Stats to the blue socket in your chest (replacing the other with the Delicate.)

Moving your enchants to +65AP Superior potency on top of that saw another dps increase.

Change your meta to the Relentless Earthseige, and put the Torment enchant on it if you have the rep.  If you don't, work on the rep. icon_biggrin

Change your Sunscope to a Heartseeker, another increase.

Leveling your Blacksmithing and using those sockets will help a ton as well.  Makes me sad to see someone with such a great opportunitye and let it go wasted.

OK.  Now, you are WAAAAYYYY over Hit Cap.  You are not only killing them, but you are killing them mafia style and shooting a dead man repeatedly.  Try and move out some of your Hit gear into agi or crit gear, and definitely take out the 1/3 and 3/3 in FA and pop it somewhere else.  Ditching the Mark of Supremecy for the Herkumi War Token will help a ton if you have the tokens.  Even getting Darkmoon Card: Greatness saw +100 dps in replacing it with a lower GS trinket.  (Herkumi was an increase of +162 on FD)

Like Tak, I too would like to see your rotation, however, methinks since you seem to know what you are doing, it's pretty standard, just needs some tweaking.

Also, don't beat yourself up on target dummy runs.  I think it was Tak that told me to use them to get your shot rotation down, but boss kills are a truer gauge.

Hope this helps, and happy hunting!

I want to thank everyone for their input, so far I took a little from everyone, swapped a lot of gems, enchants, changed to serpent sting glyph and swapped out mark of supremecy for mirror of truth, so far at the target dummy I've seen a 300-500 dps increase, topping out at 5500dps.  Thanks a lot guys and any more pointers and suggestions are completely appreciated.

oh and my shot rotation is serpent-chimera-aimed-rapid fire-steady shot-steady-steady-chimera-aimed…. something like that anyway.

I swapped carapiece of forgotten kings for Longstrider's Vest… let me know if thats a + or a -

I dropped arcane from my rotation and that also helped.

I will also redo my points and put fa into hunter's mark or something. haven't decided yet.

Thanks again folks, huge help!

Consider popping rapid fire at the beginning of your rotation. that may feel more smooth.

for your talent build i would drop 2 points in rapid recuperation and the last point in improved hunters mark.

Honestly, no I'm not. And do you know what's great about that, I don't feel the need to defend myself. I know what my hunter is capable of and I know what works for me. The two most important things I've learned over the 4 years that I've played are this:

1. do what leads you to have fun on this game
2. do what works for you

What's great about those two things is that they usually go hand and hand, and they also both usually lead to a better player of the class that they are running.

Now I know that answer may not work for some people **cough, cough…sunrift…cough, cough**

So if I absolutely must defend myself, on boss fights I push a consistent 8k of DPS and hit highs of 11k. I've always been in the top 3 DPS and damage overall in my guild, even when I was so lucky as to be using the 232 Diplomat gun while raiding ICC for weeks and waiting for a bow to drop. My advice has always been sound, when I'm wrong or someone points out to me that there is a different way to do things, i accept that. And lastly, if you must know, I have rapid fire, call of the wild, and if I happen to have a useable trinket, all macro'd together. Which, unless the boss fight has a specific mechanic that makes unloading DPS in to it straight out, I always hit MD and then pop that macro and go straight in to my rotation. Which I usually lead with an aimed shot, followed by serpent, chimera, steady and then on to my normal rotation. All that also includes a silencing shot that's macro'd.

So hey, I understand that my hunter may be a freak of nature, but it works for me and what's great is that I didn't need anyone's approval or some computer program to tell me how to push that much DPS… : )

Oops, I didn't translate well, I was directing that to Sun.  You've been great at helping me and I love your advice.

LOL…no worries. I honestly don't mind Sun's criticism, I just wish it would have come with something slight constructive so that I could either learn something or Hawk would at least know why he doesn't agree with me.

Curiosity got the best of me. There a reason you lead with Aimed Shot?

I too believe that going with what works for yourself is the way to go. Not that others ideas are invalid. I've incorporated quite a bit of advice that I have gotten from this site into my own. Gar has helped me a lot in the PvP area, but I still have some things that I find work for me. As Helz said, I think this kind of thinking is what makes a better player and the game more fun for the person playing.

To be honest, I lead with aimed shot first because of the old MD mechanics where it lasted for what, three shots? And I had a hard time keeping that auto shot from going off inbetween the first two instant shots. So leading aimed, auto, chimera always worked best for me.

I know it's different now, but I like getting as much damage done during MD as I can to generate as much threat towards the tank as possible. I hate having to feign death unless I absolutely have to so the more threat I can build up on the tank the better : )

I'm willing to bet with the new MD mechanics that I coudl actually lead with serpent, chimera, aimed now and be fine.

I hate to admit..

I had a bad night, and was under the influence of something that you drink that doesn't make your head go to right places. I have no constructive criticism, was just being a dick. I apologize.

No worries Sun, I've been there before too. and I'm sure my response was more over reactive than necessary. Hope you're feeling better…
