I've read many conflicting posts about this issue as to which is better. Some say Mastery sucks (well many say BM sucks too-the heathens), some say haste is a waste.

Any opinions on this would be appreciated from you BM ol' timers icon_smile  I use the term 'ol' timers' with love and affection of course..

Oh, I play entirely solo, occasionally I bring a pet…..Thanks much.

As a soloing hunter, I'd say Mastery would be the better option. The main reason being, Mastery directly translates to increased pet damage. That is precisely what you want for soloing.

As a soloing hunter, you don't have to be all that concerned about a tight rotation. That's the main reason hunters will go for haste, but it's only really beneficial up to a point, then it starts to have diminishing returns.

As a BM soloing machine, I'd advise you to stay within 6-7% haste (possibly 5%-6% if you're using Focus Fire). If you're over that margin, then start reforging it into crit.

Thanks, from what I've read seems both have diminishing returns or mastery isn't doing what it should. Course I know very little about all that stuf.

I'm used to a tight rotation, probably too tight hence the question. I might be clippin shots. My rotation is ganked anyhow.

No matter, KC is an interesting one to get the ideal timing of, well tis for me as it's not really shot, more of an arm throw. I did use a couple of your macros with some minor changes to get focus fire down. I don't need the 'optimum' 5 stack dps so they've been helpful. As for being a bm soloing machine, I'm a weed whacker. Appreciate the advice.

I know this might be late!

Mastery is currently bad for BM, but don't worry if you have gear with mastery on. I myself have abit icon_smile When reforging the stats you will replace mastery for is Haste and Crit! Crit being the strongest stat for BM hunters and Haste being second in line really. I PvE as a BM hunter and I don't intend to change anytime soon (though my OS is SV for certains fights where my pet will be unable to reach targets)

Ill quote this from another site I made a topic on about BM.

"Reforging.

Now this is where some people have issues, I myself am not a master of Reforging but any help is good help. So when it comes to Reforging you want to make sure you are Hit capped (which is currently 961), try and do this fully though Reforging so you won't need to Gem Hit later. To do this you will want to switch your worse stat for your best stat, in a Beast Master's case you will switch Mastery for Hit. Once Hit capped you will then have some Mastery left over (if not don't worry to much) you will switch this left over Mastery for Critical Strike, as Critical Strike is a important stat for Beast Master hunter's. Plus the Critical Strike cap is 104% we may never be able to reach this but keeping out Critical Strike high is very important to do more DPS. I won't go to far into why we need Critical Strike.

Now another stat you may consider switching is Haste, not I personally won't touch this as Haste is important to Hunter's. For two reasons! 1. Haste is a Hunter's Focus Regen! 2. You want to have your Cobra Shots cooldown to be as short as possible! But don't go below 1 second as the Gobal Cooldown is 1 second.

So I guess if you had your Haste so high your Cobra Shot time was -1 you could swap some Haste for some Critical Strike."

Hopes this helps.

Has anyone crunched numbers for the mastery/haste/crit discussion. Because like the original post said there's so many opinions, it's kinda hard to decide which holds more weight due to game mechanics.

Is there also a blue post saying Mastery is broken?

I have mostly switched to Mastery for PVP BM spec, I found it the best option, but I guess maybe for PVE it would be different? The master just seems pretty damn good for BM so I don't see why people wouldn't hold it in higher regard.

Lilatha is pretty much correct. Here is something I quoted from Elitist Jerks who are the best number crunchers around.

Relative stat values

Agility
Your best stat, by far, with the possible exception of hit. One agility provides 2 AP and 1/324.85 critical strike percent, before scaling. You get 5% extra from wearing all mail, 5% from raid buffs. The AP is again increased by 25% by Animal Handler, the passive BM benefit, and 10% from raid buffs. Agility is so much better than any secondary stat that some Wrath enchants that are pure agility come out significantly ahead of the 50 and 65 rating points in masterym crit or haste that newer enchants give.
Hit
Gearing for the hit cap is generally a good idea. Ranged attacks have a 8% chance to miss against mobs 3 levels higher than us and each point of hit rating gives us 1/120.109%, so we need 961 hit to reach this, or 841 for draenei. The consensus is that it is better to be slightly over than slightly under the hit cap
Attack Power
Raw attack power is going to be rare, but still exists for some enchants, Pure AP is the slightly better than crit/haste/mastery point for point.

Crit
Almost all abilities crit for 200% damage, or 206% damage with a [Chaotic Shadowspirit Diamond]. Some exceptions include Explosive Trap and Serpent Sting which uses spell crit damage (and crit chance) – 150%, or immolation trap which cannot crit.
Mastery
Mastery affects all damage done by our pet, including Kill Command, and each point of mastery increases pet damage by 1.7%. Mastery beat out haste by a fair margin (3:2) when looking at each stats contribution with the mentioned gear previously, but is now showing up more or less on par with haste.
Haste
Haste affects both the speed of your shots (cobra and auto) and your rate of focus regeneration. You need 128.057 haste rating to get 1% haste. Haste effects generally scale multiplicatively. If you have 32% haste from gear, 3% from Pathing, and Rapid Fire, a base casting time of X would now be X/1.32/1.03/1.4. Procs that increase haste rating will stack additively with your total haste rating value (32% in this example). Focus regeneration appears to be a base of 4 focus per second scaling multiplicatively with haste; i.e. 30% haste would be 4*1.3=5.2 fps. You will likely not see a huge increase in focus regen from upgrading gear.
Mastery or Haste?
The recommendation from this guide currently is to reforge to crit when not present and doing so from the secondary stat with the largest amount of rating. If crit is present with haste or mastery, the current recommendation is to not reforge out of it (except if below hitcap as reforging will outperform gemming for hit)
