The Hunt For Skoll

by Garwulf on July 8, 2009 · 35 comments

…continues. Well at least I got to see him on the PTR today for the first time. :D

Skoll and Loque'nahak, fellow Spirit Beasts.

Yaone of Lightbringer had posted earlier this morning about taming him at the Snowdrift Plains location. I saw the comment and I figured I’d log on and make a quick swoop while I was thinking about it. Lo and behold, what do I see the moment I log in… Skoll!

Luckily Yaone was still hanging out near the taming location, so I was able to get a first hand glimpse of this new pet. He is BAD ASS! I know it’s just a re-skinned Spirit Beast with one of those funky new wolf models, but the way it all comes together with the deep icy blue, and the lightning, and the lasers, and the… well, you get the point. Plus, he’s friggin huge. His normal size is nearly the equivalent of an enraged old world wolf.

Thanks Yaone for hanging around and chatting with me while I grabbed these screenshots. :-D

Skoll and the Grimtotem Spirit Guide

I think Skoll’s buzz has been quieted considerably by all this Worgen craziness. Once players start to see Hunters with him on the live realms, he’s going to be highly sought after by Beast Masters.

For those of you that are interested in taming him on the PTR or just want a heads up on his spawn areas for when live hits, here’s a map with Skoll’s two known spawn locations.

Skoll the Spirit Beast Spawn Locations Map

I’d expect there to be at least 1-3 more locations being reported in the next several days, but these are the only two I’ve heard about so far. If anyone knows of any confirmed sightings or tames at other locations, please post them in a comment.

According to Yaone, Skoll is on a 6 hour respawn timer, or at least that’s what she was told by a fellow Hunter who was camping him as well. I wasn’t able to log back on and confirm that, but at least I have a better idea when my chances of taming him might be greater.

That looks amazing.I’m leveling my new NE hunter super fast so I can acquire one of them Skolls. Also on another note, can any of you fellow hunters recommend a first rare spawn for taming that has a unique ability?Anything from say 20-30ish level. As of now my NE hunter is level 10,just started him like 6 Hrs ago.Give me a weekend and I’ll be at 60.

@Raybeez: Well rare spawns have the same abilities as any other beast of that species, and since wolves are best pet for MM/SV as of patch 3.1, I would recommend you tame a “Prairie Wolf” found on Mulgore. When tamed, if anyone (including you) clicks on it, the wolf will bark :P

EDIT: I still think Ghostwolf looks better than Skoll :P

I find that yet another Spirit Beast to be underwhelming… Even were I to roll BM in raids, it would be statistically inferior to the T-Rex, and unenjoyable in the sense that I would know I wasn’t squeezing every last drop of dps I can out of this awesome class that we call hunter. (At least, that is where a lot of the fun for me lies.) I guess this especially smarts after the massiveness of the worgen. It was unique(ish), and had the best utility for the current most efficient specs. I hope that Blizz at least notices the response the worgen got and implements something more substantial than vanity factors to rare pets. I’d love to see something tree specific rolled out for rares, for example a bird pet could do an ArP screech for marks, a cat could do a roar for +crit. What I’m saying is I’d like them to be as awesome as they look.

@ Raybeez

If I were you, I’d go for Strider Clutchmother at level 20. It is one of the most seldom seen pets in the game, it’s a one-of-a-kind skin, it looks fantastic, and it’s in Night Elf land so no need trekking all over Azeroth in the lower levels.

Another to consider if you want a rare is Mist Howler- level 22 wolf in Ashenvale. Nothing too special about him anymore (he used to have a really fast attack speed), but he’s the only low-level wolf with that skin in Kalimdor until you get into Feralas.

I have tamed Arikara on my 29 twink Hunter. I must say, that was one of my more memorable taming adventures. Wind Serpents aren’t too exciting now, but if you’re going for uniqueness, I’m with smash on that one. Arikara is a very cool pet. The puff of smoke animation is great.

My overall vote goes to Clutchmother though.

Installing the PTR now so I can check out the hunter changes, and will be looking out for Skoll, see if he is worth abandoning Loque or Gondria for.

You should of asked her to hit Beastial Wrath! That thing probably looks ridiculous….might heal my Worgen wounds…hmmm. Thanks for the updates Garwulf, let us know if you confirm any other known spawn points. Awesome posts as always.

No Skoll yet, but I have manged to find:

King Krush (which I tamed, if only I could find him on the live realms… *sigh*)
Vyragosa
Dirkee

My PTR seems to be pretty much empty, barely anyone around at all, even in the Argent Tournament grounds

Got him!

Although not that keen on how he looks from behind (remember this is how you will see him 99% of the time)

Not sure if this is a deal breaker or not yet.

Well I have managed to see Skoll 3 more times since I tamed him, not one new spawn point tho… Twice at the spot I got him in Snowdrift and once next to brunnhildar.

@ Uchikoma grats on catching him!

@ mysterious hunter who reads here that I seen on ptr. Its “Yay oh knee” (thanks for the ninja logout before I could pm you back how my name is pronounced!)

I was able to tame Skoll at approximately 1 AM on Wed August 5th, 2009 @ coordinates 45.62 after camping the three known spawn sites for 4 hours. I was the first one on my server, US Velen, to acquire this pet. Thanks for the valuable information here, it definitely helped!

Tamed Skoll myself August 5th as well at the southern end of Snowdrift Plains at around 5:00 in the morning. First one to tame it on my server, too. Everyone loves him! I’d have to say given his looks and what I named him (Lector, due to his “shocking” appearance), he’s a little brother to my ghost wolf, Hector. :D

Well, now that I’ve filled up my stable roster, which also includes King Krush and the “Crocoslime,” I’ll have to level my 72 Hunter if I wanna tame more awesome pets. :P

Good point. It is odd that WoWHead still does not have him listed in their database.

@ Laura

Grats on Skoll and thanks for the coords.

@ Jezpalimu

That’s awesome! I’ve been keeping my eyes open, but I have yet to see a Hunter with him on my server. Server first FTW! Nice name(s) too. ;)

Skoll is in the latest update of NPCScan. His NPC ID is 35189. I’ll post an update on his whereabouts a little later this evening.

Just in case anyone is still looking for the ID for their NPCscan, the newest version on WoWinterface includes Skoll.

@Raybeez: I’d go for Humar the Pridelord personally, He may not be completely unique anymore but he’s still cool. Eyachekee (sp?) would also be a good choice but much harder to get.

Found him at 30,64 easy tame, I have all 3 spirit beasts because I’m a collector of everything =)

@Rayvenne

If you are 80 looking to tame the white lion or just over 60 you can also get a white lion “Sian Rotam” from a winterspring quest, its tricky to do since you have to be in the right spot for his mate Shy to call for him. And they both can fear >< But otherwise he is pretty easy to get now, even easier for alliance who previously could not get this quest~

Tamed Skoll this morning at 5:15 am EST and Server time on Duskwood Server. at the round disc at coords (46-65). i also seen him tamed at 3 other locations. (30-64), (27-51), and (40-62). also on a side note. i watched an alliance mage named “Tolerated” kill him 4 times just because he said hunters dont deserve it as a pet. those was his exact words. remember he is on duskwood server. lol…

Just picked the bad boy up. 1415 PST on Lightbringer. Location 30,64. I believe that he was nabbed earlier that day around 0200. So, if appears 10 hour turnaround. I hope that helps folks!

Good luck. Skoll is worth the wait.

Tamed on Arathor, at Snowdrift Plains, 21:57 Pacific. Managed to get him before some Shaman killed him. *She* just wanted to kill him, despite the non-achievement. She still congratulated me.

And I was just passing through on the way to run some Oracle dailies.

just got him at 2:42 am server time on the underbog server, ive had him stolen from me 2 times in teh last 2 days, and i finally find him today. While im taming him a pally healer tried to help me by healing me, not knowing that he’d break the taming process, then it became a mad chase to try to tame him again cus the pally wouldnt stop running in circles. Finally got an ice trap between em and tamed him with about 1200 hp left. Took me about 50+ hours of camping over the last week but he was worth ever second =)
got him at the north western spots.
good luck to all you other hunters trying to find him, dont give up, he’s worth it XD

Thanks for this post… im from Stormweaver… looked one time at Snowdrift plains last night at about 9:30pm central, and lucky me, he was right there! Got him real easy… i was shaking lol. Tested him out, awesome lazer spell hes got, but one thing that really seemed to tick me off… Im big on making sure i get the best Dps in a raid or dungeon and i really hate Beast Mastery, its kinda boring imo… I swapped to my Survival Spec, and Skoll disappeared to my stable. When i went to call him out, it said that i cannot summon a exotic pet!!! That really blows that i cant use him on my other spec… I mean wouldnt it be nice to go BM and tame a exotic pet and then use it on ur other spec? Ugggghh Guess ill just tame a regular wolf and just use Skoll as show off :/

This is what I mean… often times these beasts are never there when we’re looking for them. Grats on getting Skoll and GL with TLPD.
